St. Joseph Community News MARVELING AT THE MYSTERY OF MOTHERHOOD
In 1988, Pope St. John Paull II wrote a letter to the Church entitled Mulieris Dignitatem (“On the Dignity of Women”). Combined with a shorter “Letter to Women” that he wrote seven years later, it gives a beautiful view of God and the Church’s vision of women – their vocation, their feminine greatness, the wonder of their being, and the gift that they are from the Lord.
On this Mother’s Day, I would like to turn your attention to a fragment of this powerful work (Section 18) that centers on the mystery of motherhood:
In order to [understand a woman’s vocation] we must…seek a deeper understanding of the truth about the human person recalled by the Second Vatican Council. The human being––both male and female––is the only being in the world which God willed for its own sake. The human being is a person, a subject who decides for himself. At the same time, man “cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of self” (Gaudium et Spes, 24) …This is not a purely theoretical interpretation, nor an abstract definition, for it gives an essential indication of what it means to be human, while emphasizing the value of the gift of self, the gift of the person…
This truth about the person also opens up the path to a full understanding of women's motherhood. Motherhood is the fruit of the marriage union of a man and woman, of that biblical “knowledge” which corresponds to the “union of the two in one flesh” (cf. Gen 2:24). This brings about - on the woman's part - a special “gift of self,” as an expression of that spousal love whereby the two are united to each other so closely that they become “one flesh” …
This mutual gift of the person in marriage opens to the gift of a new life, a new human being, who is also a person in the likeness of his parents. Motherhood implies from the beginning a special openness to the new person: and this is precisely the woman's “part.” In this openness, in conceiving and giving birth to a child, the woman “discovers herself through a sincere gift of self” …
Motherhood involves a special communion with the mystery of life as it develops in the woman's womb. The mother is filled with wonder at this mystery of life, and “understands” with unique intuition what is happening inside her. In the light of the “beginning,” the mother accepts and loves as a person the child she is carrying in her womb. This unique contact with the new human being developing within her gives rise to an attitude towards human beings––not only towards her own child, but every human being––which profoundly marks the woman's personality. It is commonly thought that women are more capable than men of paying attention to another person, and that motherhood develops this predisposition even more.
To all of you who are mothers – to those women who have given freely of themselves in this way in order to find
themselves through that self-sacrifice and self-gift to a husband and children – thank you! Today, we honor you, we
marvel at the mystery that you embody, and we thank God for you, for the self-emptying your vocations demands, and
for the gift that you are!

The Knights of Columbus of Indiana held their 118th annual convention last weekend in Indianapolis. Archbishop of Indianapolis, Charles Thompson, himself a 4th degree Knight, was the celebrant for the opening and Memorial Masses.
Our Council here at St Joseph won 2 awards, one for membership achievement and the second for being in the top 10, out of the more than 190 Councils in Indiana, for contributions to the Ultrasound Initiative. Due to the support of our parish we were able to donate $2,434.00.
For fiscal year 7/1/17 - 6/30/18, the Indiana K of C provided 6 ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers around the state including 2 for Matrix Life Care Center in Lafayette. These machines have been instrumental in saving many unborn babies’ lives.
We will continue passive fundraising for Ultrasound machines with the goal of sending a minimum of $250.00 each year to the State. You are encouraged to designate a gift to the Ultrasound campaign at your convenience.
Please see our Facebook page for more details about the State Convention and our Council.

Are you living a busy life and don’t really have time to talk to your spouse? We have a gift to share with you; it’s called a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The Weekend will give you the opportunity to examine your lives together. A time to share your feelings, hopes, joys and frustrations without the interruption of family commitments, TV, internet and phone calls, rather it is a time to get to know your spouse all over again and rediscover your deep love for each other. Future Marriage Encounter Weekends will be at Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House, Indianapolis, from 1-3 November 2019, and at Mount Saint Francis Centre for Spirituality, New Albany, from 16-18 August 2019. Visit www.wwme.org for further information.
