Second Collection on May 6 & 7: Catholic Communication Campaign

The essential mission of the CCC is to contribute to the process of evangelization by fostering activities in rela-tion to television, radio, internet, and other media, and through special projects of the Catholic press. An annual collection is taken up in the dioceses, which remit 50% of the funds collected to the National Office. From these funds, grants are made by the USCCB Subcommittee on the Catholic Communication Campaign. The remaining portion of the collection is retained by the dioceses for use in local communication projects. Please make checks payable to St. Michael’s Church. Youth Group

The Youth Group participated in St Michael's first ever water station for the NJ Marathon. We had a tables set up in the front of the church and passed out water the marathon runners. It was such a wonderful event, filled with constant encourage-ment to the runners. A note on the Psalm. . . During the season of Easter, we will sing a new Common Psalm: Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20 All respond: “Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.”

Shout joyfully to God, all the earth, sing praise to the glory of his name; proclaim his glorious praise. Say to God, “How tremendous are your deeds!”

“Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you, sing praise to your name!” Come and see the works of God, his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam.

He has changed the sea into dry land; through the river they passed on foot; therefore let us rejoice in him. He rules by his might forever.

Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare what he has done for me. Blessed be God who refused me not my prayer or his kindness!

Here is what the Church has to say regarding the Psalm between readings: It is preferable for the Responsorial Psalm to be sung, at least as far as the people’s response is concerned. Hence the psalmist, or cantor of the Psalm, sings the Psalm verses at the ambo or another suitable place, while the whole congregation sits and listens, normally taking part by means of the response, except when the Psalm is sung straight through, that is, with-out a response. However, in order that the people may be able to sing the Psalm response more easily, texts of some responses and Psalms have been chosen for the different times of the year or for the different catego-ries of Saints. These may be used instead of the text corresponding to the reading whenever the Psalm is sung. In the Dioceses of the United States of America, instead of the Psalm assigned in the Lectionary, there may be sung either the Responsorial Gradual from the Graduale Romanum, or the Responsorial Psalm or the Alleluia Psalm from the Graduale Simplex, as described in these books, or an antiphon and Psalm from another collection of Psalms and antiphons, including Psalms arranged in metrical form, providing that they have been approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop. Songs or hymns may not be used in place of the Responsorial Psalm. (General Instruction of the Roman Missal Paragraph 61) Why are we using a Common Psalm? As noted in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, it is desirable for the entire congregation to sing the response of the Responsorial Psalm.

In order to make it as easy as possible for all people to sing the response, we will repeat the same Common Psalm every week during the Easter Season. Repetition is an effective learning tool. This approach was effec-tive during the Lenten Season. As the weeks of Lent progressed, an in-creasing number of people disposed to singing were able to join in the singing of the response. Why is the Psalmist in front of the congregation? The Responsorial Psalm is part of the Liturgy of the Word. The scrip-tures are proclaimed from the ambo. While it is not required of the Psalm to be sung from the ambo, it is a logical place for this bit of scripture to be proclaimed. Additionally, since some people are visual learners, there can be some benefit to seeing and hearing the Psalmist indicate when to re-spond. Why is the organ not played during the Psalm? The voice is the primary instrument of all Liturgies. The voice is pri-mary because it carries the Word of God. The organ can, and often does, provide effective support to singing. However, as it plays a supportive role in relation to the singing, it is secondary to the voice. Our voices identify most closely with other voices, not instruments. I cannot replicate the sound of the organ with my voice; I can, however, do a reasonably accu-rate job of replicating the sound of another person’s voice. A cappella music is always appropriate in the Mass. In fact, it is the type of music most natural within the Mass. From Sacrosanctum Concili-um, paragraph 116: “The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as spe-cially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.” By its nature, Grego-rian chant is a cappella. For this reason, a cappella music is “specially suited” to the Mass. With that said, please be aware that our Common Psalm is not Gregori-an chant. In addition to Gregorian chant being a cappella, it is also in Lat-in. We are singing a simple style of music known as plain chant; it allows us to focus on the words. We want to focus on the words, especially dur-ing the Liturgy of Word. Also, in a very practical sense, I can’t bi-locate!
