France Exchange Trip October 2015 Anthony Brammer, Gemma Cherry Health and Social Care Imagine a school of 16-19 year old learners where the whole class automatically respectfully stand up when an adult comes into the room. Not just for the Principal; not even just for a Lecturer; but any adult! And… they don’t sit down or start talking again until they are told that they can do. Imagine the dining area in the school after lunch, where without prompts, and without question, all the students take their dirty pots away, wipe their tables down, and put their chairs on top so that the rostered two or three students can sweep and mop the floor before the afternoon classes can start. Imagine a whole class of students being on time and prepared for their 8 o’clock lesson, putting their mobile phones in a tray by the classroom door as they entered, putting their chewing gum in the bin before the lesson starts, getting pens and paper out ready (all without prompts!) and making an active contribution throughout the lesson which lasts for two hours without a break… and a Sociology lesson where the teacher naturally challenged learners’ language and maths skills from start to finish! At one point, a learner was required to read from their handout a paragraph which had been written in English – with wary glances over to “Les Anglais” sitting in the corner in case they pronounced things slightly wrong. (Almost word perfect – and the only bit of the lesson we understood.) Maison Familiale Rurale, Sainte Florine, is a kind of academy for 200-300 young learners in one of the most rural and most deprived areas of France. There is a boarding facility for learners who live too far away to commute every day during the week. MFR offers an alternative to traditional academic teaching, which we would call vocational studies and the qualification tasks were recognisable projects that BTEC, CACHE/NCFE and City & Guilds require from our students. Their study programme involves classroom teaching, work experience, and enrichment activities that embed team working and competition – we observed a group of Health and Social Care students in a two-hour Badminton lesson, and a small group of 14-
