Publishers note: In the 2008 and2012 Presidential elections, Virgin-

ias results more closely matchedthe nations than any other state. With New Jersey Gov. Chris Chris-

tie enjoying record approval ratingsand expected to coast to re-election

in the countrys only other 2013gubernatorial contest, the nation

will look to Virginia as a harbin-ger o whether President Obamas

    re-election was a result o a bet-ter campaign or a sign o the na-

tion becoming more accepting othe Democratic agenda. Tis year,

our gubernatorial election will benational news or a bigger reason

than the act that it is easy or thenational media to cover since it is

    right next door to D.C.

It seems as i the renzy o the2012 election has yet to die down, and the political environment is al-

ready ully charged here in Virginiaor next years gubernatorial battle, shaping up to be the marquee po-litical event in the entire coun-try in an otherwise dull o year. While both sides in Washingtonare grappling and positioning overthe looming budget crisis, andconcerned citizens here in Virginiarightly worry about the scal cliand its consequences, events arealready moving at a ast pace orour statewide elections next all.Considering how closely Virginia

mirrored the national popularvote and our now likely place as aperennial battleground state, next

years gubernatorial election wasbound to be exciting and closelywatched. But that was beore itbecame clear just who the twonominees were likely to be. Nowthat we know their identities, it isclear that the 2013 matchup willbe bitter, bruising, and viewed as amicrocosm or the nation movinginto the 2014 midterms.

On the Republican side, Lieu-tenant Governor Bolling decidedagainst waging a ght or the nom-ination ater the Republican Partydecided to switch rom a primaryelection to a party convention. Itis widely believed that a party con-

vention tilts dramatically towardthe most conservative elements inthe party, who are largely support-ers o Attorney General Ken Cuc-cinelli. Seeing no plausible path tothe nomination, Bolling droppedout o the race this week andmade it clear he was disappointedin the change and make it evenclearer that he doubts Cuccinelliselectability in November. For themoment, the Republican party israllying around the controversialAttorney General and he appearsto be the presumptive nominee. On the Democratic side, it has

been no secret that ormer Demo-cratic National Committee Chair-man erry McAulie was plan-ning on making another run at

the nomination that was denied tohim in 2009. Te real question orthe Democrats was, What WouldMarker Warner Do? SenatorWarner, already a ormer populargovernor, could likely have gainedboth the nomination and the gen-eral election win had he decidedto run. However, ater apparentlygiving it serious consideration andprompting some speculation, War-ner decided against it and seemsready to run or reelection to theSenate in 2014. Either the Senateor the Governors Mansion couldserve as a tting platorm or apossible 2016 Presidential run orWarner. With the matchup between

McAulie and Cuccinelli, the bas-es o both parties get what theywant and political junkies get whatthey love, a knock-down drag-outbrawl between two seasoned tal-ents. However, Virginias growthin political importance has comeabout largely because o neither

political base but tha large moderate swopen to both partiby extremes. Whilecertainly be entertaito believe either candear themselves to ters in Northern Virgmond suburbs that welection. Many people harbor strong opin-ions with regard to which type oChristmas tree they want to pur-chase. Some cannot live without anatural, reshly-cut Christmas tree, while others preer the convenienceo articial trees. Tose who insiston a natural tree might want to con-sider the ollowing tips when buyingwhats likely their biggest decorative

    item o the holiday season.

    * Ask when the tree was cut down.Precut trees may be cut down weeksbeore theyre sold. So i youre buy-

ing a precut tree, chances are thetree was cut down much earlier than

you think. Tis doesnt mean the treewont make it through the holidayseason, but a tree that was cut sev-eral weeks ago should have some oits bottom trunk removed beore itsplaced in the stand. Tis will make iteasier or the tree to consume water.Tis step likely isnt necessary i the

tree was cut down the same day youbring it home.

    * Have the tree shaken beore takingit home. A tree should be shaken in

a shaker beore you put it in your carand bring it home. A shaker removesany debris or dead needles rom thetree, which can save you the trou-ble o cleaning up all o those deadneedles rom your living room oorlater on.

    * Have the tree wrapped beore tak-ing it home. A tree should also bewrapped in twine beore taking ithome. Te twine should be tightenough to keep the trees branchesrom blowing in the wind when youattach the tree to the top o your

vehicle. I possible, keep the treewrapped in twine as you place it inthe stand. Tis makes the tree easierto control.

    * Choose the right location. Whenlooking or the right place to set upyour natural tree, its best to choosea spot thats cool and ree o drats.Te tree should not be placed nearheat sources, including appliances, replaces or vents, because such

heat sources create a saety hazardand can make it difcult or the treeto retain moisture. Tere should alsobe ample space between the top othe tree and the ceiling.

    * Place some covering on the groundbeneath the tree. Even a reshly cutnatural tree will shed needles overthe course o the holiday season. Be-ore placing the stand in the location

youve chosen, put some type o cov-ering, such as a tree bag, beneath thestand so its easier to gather all thoseneedles once the holiday season hasended.

    * Remember that nathirsty. Men and wonever had a natural in the past might be show thirsty natural stands reservoir shouwater, which should nthe stump. I the wathe stump, you mighcut a little more o thtrunk to ensure the trthrough the holiday sbe a hassle once thedecorated, so be surwater in the reservoiper day to maintain alevels.
