This year we are celebrating our 10th festival! For one night only the city centre will come alive with spectacular large scale light projections, exhibitions, installations, film, dance, music, theatre and street performances. Many of the city’s arts organisations and public buildings will be opening their doors late into the night as artists transform spaces into temporary showcases of their work.

Bring your friends and family along to experience a fantastic festival atmosphere, navigate your way around over 50 different events across the city centre, and sample some delicious street food. As darkness falls, come and see the city of Leeds in a new light!

This year we are proud to be supporting the work of emerging

artists through our Shine programme, funded by Arts Council England. Working in partnership with Illuminating York, we will also be exhibiting work from their emerging artist programme, SPARK. Check out the Light Night website and social media for more details of where these events will be popping up. We are also pleased to be showcasing three artists from Nottingham Light Night.

As part of our anniversary we have invited you to be part of this year’s festival. Playful Leeds have been on tour across Leeds hosting community workshops. On Light Night come along to Victoria Gardens and see the robots created by Leeds residents.

Things you need to know:

All events are free but some events may require booking in advance. The last entry to all events is 15 mins before the end. More information including disabled access to venues and events can be found on our website. Leeds College of ArtVernon Street, LS2 8PH7.30 – 10pm (Live performances at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm)Ways of Seeing is an interactive projection mapping installation which plays with the hidden histories of Leeds College of Art’s Vernon Street site. It reveals the eclectic catalogue of work created within its walls, from current students to as far back as 1846. This is the premiere of a new interactive story-telling technique from Amorphous Orchestra using a custom designed system. The visual reality of the building will change and shift as it is rearranged by the live improvised soundscapes emanating from the base of the projection from renowned musicians Christophe de Bezenac and Chris Sharkey. Commissioned by Leeds College of Art

3 / Pool

Simon RingePortland Building, Portland Way, LS1 3HE 7.30 – 10pmLarge scale projection piece, Pool, reveals a life size car swimming in and out of view in a murky, aquatic world. It silently roams and glides through its domain searching for both meaning and function. On encountering another like itself it enters into a kind of playful release, possibly an impromptu courtship.Sponsored by Leeds Beckett University

4 / Capture

12 / 10A

Stephen Malorie PotterBridewell Corridor, Leeds Town Hall, The Headrow, LS1 3AD 5pm – 10pm10A is a large-scale paper cut installation that uses light to create an immersive, highly physical environment, in which the viewer is a roving participant. Hand cutting in favour of laser allows the creation of a history within the work that machine production obscures. Its strong visual impact is contradicted by the fragility of the materials – paper and light. The fragile veil-like paper cut, stretched out like a corridor, simultaneously invites and prohibits admittance.

13 / Python & Weezell’s Pop UpPet Shop

Carol Hanson &Model, 19 East Parade, LS1 2BH5pm – 10pmAll creatures great and small hit the high street tonight as our cartoon pet shop ‘pops up’ for one night only. The beasties wake at 5pm so please do not feed the animals...

Alison Andrews & Matthew Bellwood Portal Room, Central Library, Calverley Street, LS1 3AB5pm-10pmThe 365 Leeds Stories Almanac is a functioning diary for 2015. Inspired by Matthew Bellwood’s Twitter project @365LeedsStories, the book contains a forgotten local history, an overheard conversation, or a personal reflection on living in the city of Leeds, for every single day of the coming year. The almanac combines Matthew’s own material with that generated by over 300 other people who live, work, or seek residency in Leeds, with stunning new photographs by local photographer, Lizzie Coombes. The almanacs will be distributed for free on Light Night.

23 / Intervals

Liz WestHenry Moore Room, Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, LS1 3AA5pm – 10pmIntervals creates a field of delicacy through systematically arranged shards of multi-coloured acrylic which glow with an array of hues, saturating the immediate surroundings. This intense myriad of colours directly transforms the environment by creating an experiential encounter using an iridescent colour palette reminiscent of a city at night. This work carefully balances the science of colour theory as suggested in Josef Albers text ‘Interaction of Color’, together with the aesthetic and luminosity of light.

24 / City of Light

Paul MatosicHenry Moore Room, Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, LS1 3AA 5pm – 10pmAs a species we are perhaps unique in that we value our history and seek to record past events. Often all that remains are the architectural remnants of an era, and often these structures become the repositories for other tangible items from that period.

With the advent of photography the recording of memories became more democratised and no longer the reserve of the technological advances cause some of these older methods to become redundant. Visitors can participate by making their own small structure from slides or bring along their own unwanted slides to create something larger.

25 / New Exhibition Launch

Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, LS1 3AA 5pm – 10pmOn Light Night Leeds Art Gallery will be launching two new exhibitions as well as family arts activity in Artspace – everyone welcome.

3 October 2014 – 18 Jan 2015Elín JakobsdóttirElín Jakobsdóttir is an Icelandic artist whose work combines drawings, films and sculptural objects which consider the everyday world through the lens of the subconscious. Shot in Super 8 on location in Leeds Art Gallery her latest film Eyes Cast is a silent, visual poem that traces a path through the building by focussing on two bronze portraits by the sculptor Jakob Epstein.

Shezad Dawood Artist Shezad Dawood presents a new film installation, textile paintings and neon work alongside selected works from the Leeds Collection which interrogate and inspire a meeting point between modernism and mysticism. Dawood’s Towards the Possible Film is a science-fiction film that follows, allusively and self-consciously, in the footsteps of experimental pioneers like Jean-Luc Godard. Together these works map out the artist’s enquiries into history, narrative and possibility.
