COMMUNITY | BUSINESS | NETWORKING
In January 2011, Engage launched its Friendly Friday community and business networking events. Since then, Engage has run over 40 monthly events with between 20-40 people attending the monthly sessions and a total of over 800 people since the events began.
The events are 3 hour sessions held on the second Friday of each month, with the aim of providing:
uPre start-ups, self-employed, small businesses and third sector organisations with information advice and guidance
uNetworking opportunities for local people and organisations
uSharing information and making referrals to partner organisations
uPromoting, supporting and encouraging (social/local) enterprise
uA range of guest, speakers, workshops and activities focussed on enterprise and business development
uA friendly and supportive environment to network, collaborate and showcase local enterprise.
“A lively, vibrant, informative event. A great opportunity to meet people who can help and
support business. I met several potential clients for CASE and other very useful contacts.“
Tim Tavener, Co-operative and Social Enterprise Development Agency.
“The event was very helpful in helping with the practical details of setting up on my own, it helped me identify areas I needed to give more attention to and
also those that I had not thought of at all.“ Linda Stewart Hypnotherapy
In 2012 Engage Multimedia delivered two highly acclaimed roadshow events in partnership with a number of other agencies. These were the Friendly Friday Goes Large and the Ladies Day events. Each event had over 150 people attending. These events provided a wide range of activities such as IAG, networking, guest speakers, workshops, business surgery, information stalls, learning and business development opportunities.
The feedback received from members and partners about the monthly events and the bigger roadshow events has been fantastic.
“Friendly Friday perpetually links me with other people or information that I need. But the FF Goes Large Event enabled more awareness raising of my company in locality. Equally it has made other orgs more visible to me so I know where to find
them. Additionally some promising work to come from links made on the day.”Clare Walker Consultancy
“As a trader, I thoroughly enjoyed Ladies Day. The event was well organised, promoted and attended. As well as catching up with some
friends on the day, I made some excellent new contacts interested in Forever Aloe products and business opportunity.” Lorraine Turnpenny, Forever Aloe

What makes you want to be your own boss? Being my own boss has always been my dream. It gives me far greater sense of achievement therefore satisfaction. The freedom to use my own ideas, be creative and have a say in what I do and how I do it. I see it as a constant challenge to better myself and reach my long term goal.
How’s your business developing? The latest difference to my business is the inclusion of my online Facebook shop. I am steadily building up a Facebook rapport with customers and potential customers and is an inexpensive and straightforward option. I have used Facebook ads to help promote this with the E banner adverts and paying for posts. The sales have been steady but when I spend time promoting this myself on Facebook and twitter I do get results and my likes are increasing daily now with little effort which is great!
Find Sam’s Shop on Facebook: Iridescence by Samantha H
What are the most important things you have learnt along your journey? So far I have already learnt a vast amount about myself (thought I was an expert on that!) and the business world.
Some of the most important aspects so far is to realise when to quit when something isn’t working after giving it a very hard try and move onto the next strategy. If you start out with the wrong mindset then don’t bother!
What are the biggest successes you achieved so far? Biggest success for me is feeling proud of myself. It’s been a hard, challenging yet totally amazing nine months of my life so far. I’m a single parent, I don’t drive, I had no pot of money, the odds are stacked against me but I’ve begun to make some profit and I’m providing consistently for my son and I. And the best most amazing bit was a few weeks ago when my son had to choose his GCSE options. He picked business as one of them, then declared that he was proud of me and what I’d done and it has inspired him. I cried.
Who and where have you received help and support from? b-Inspired and Leicester for Business - fantastic since day one with workshops, one to one support and the people I’ve met through this - other start ups. People I’ve met through networking, that are already established businesses and listening to their experiences.Help and events that I have paid for have been excellent, I went to the National Achievers Congress last summer in London and the energy and excitement was to die for!
And most definitely my friends and family. For putting up with not seeing me so much, for being tired and grumpy at times, for my parents help with childcare and transport, my son for his techy support and hugs.
Why do you love Friendly Friday? I love Friendly Friday because it is that, friendly and welcoming, not daunting. Its a wealth of information, opportunity to network also, and great for confidence building especially as a new start up, talking about yourself and your business.
Sam will be telling her story on 14th June at Friendly Friday.

Engage Multimedia was set up in July 2010. Beckie explains “It was clear from the start that Engage was going to be a social enterprise company. We wanted to work with community and business organisations with the aim of bringing them closer together.”
The company values were to engage the broadest possible audience by using multimedia to inform, entertain and educate, and to provide value and impact for our customers by improving their multimedia communications.
Engage Multimedia provides training, design and consultancy services to charities, community groups, social enterprises, businesses and educational organisations; because we realise the importance of communicating effectively in the digital age, even more so in the current recession.

The introduction of the Universal Credit from October 2013 is one of the key reasons for introducing RTI.
Payroll information will have to be reported electronically, on or before any day when you pay someone. The vast majority of employers must report their payroll information online using a Full Payment Submission (FPS) for each pay period.
Each time a payroll is run details will need to be submitted of:• deductions, such as Income Tax and NICs• starter and leaver dates if applicable• all employees paid, including those below the NICs Lower Earnings Limit (LEL) • all starter and leaver information (P45/ P46)
A FINGER ON THE BUSINESS PULSE
by Mahmood RezaData accuracy is critical to the operation of RTI (and to avoid penalties), the information needs to be verified from an official source such as HMRC and/or Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) documentation; passport documentation; birth certificate; full driving licence (photo version).
RTI presents a number of key challenges for businesses mainly due to the fact that HMRC will have immediate access to information, this includes: • cash flow planning will be more crucial, HMRC will be more ‘assertive’ in pursuing late payments:• ensuring that payroll knowledge is up to date, for example deciding whether someone should be an employee (employers decision and is known as a status test), correct payroll treatment of expenses and benefits; • adequate business records; • treatment of directors remuneration and tax planning; • up to date HR policies and procedures.
Businesses and organisations need support and assistance to help them be sustainable, grow, thrive and survive in difficult economic times. Mahmood Reza explains the importance of real time information for businesses.
Mahmood Reza established Pro Active Resolutions in 1995 with a strong ethical and social ethos, hoping to bring his knowledge and expertise to bear not just on the commercial sector but on the charitable and arts sector too. While offering a range of practical accounting and book keeping, management consultancy, training support and IT services, Pro Active Resolutions are often the first point of contact for business queries from their clients.
We’ve always had a strong commitment to the local business community and recently I’ve taken Pro Active Resolutions into a consortium of organisations in Leicester delivering business support and advice to small businesses.
This group, Leicester for Business, is offering a range of free advice, mentoring and training to help entrepreneurs in the critical first three years of business to become more efficient, focused and businesslike.

About Hollingsworths Solicitors
Greg Hollingsworth will be Guest speaker at Friendly Friday event on April 12th and will be avaiilable for your questions. Come along for help with legal issues affecting your business.
Greg Hollingsworth is a Director of Hollingsworths Solicitors, based on New Walk, Leicester. Hollingsworths advise businesses large and small on legal issues and problems. Greg explains how he helps SMEs and start-ups:
At Hollingsworths, we like to get to know our clients and understand their business – we are in it for the long term. What we try to do is be there to help our clients develop and grow, by trying to prevent problems arising, being available to answer questions and help with their worries.
Business owners aren’t interested in the law itself – what they are interested in is the practical impact of the law in their business. We focus on giving practical and commercial legal advice, and finding solutions cost effectively. Running a small business brings the occasional problem or concern – I try to help solve those legal problems.
I do regularly get asked by small business owners about terms and conditions, and whether they need them. The answer depends on what type of business they are in, and who their customers are. In an ideal world, a business would have bespoke contractual documents. But terms and conditions are only useful in a well organised business where those terms can be incorporated in to the contract. I help with the practical side – making sure that the right systems are in place before introducing terms and conditions.
I am also often asked about cash flow problems, and collecting money in. For business to business transactions, Late Payment legislation allows a business to recover interest on an unpaid invoice at 8% p.a. over the base rate plus compensation of up to £100 from the debtor. This can help towards funding the recovery of unpaid debts or be used as an incentive to make the debtor pay.
