The Parable of the Good Samaritan tells the story of a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jeri-cho, and while on the way he is robbed of everything he had, including his clothing, and is beaten to within an inch of his life. That road was treacherously winding and was a favourite hideout of robbers and thieves. The next character Jesus introduces into His story is a priest. He spends no time describing the priest and only tells of how he showed no love or compas-sion for the man by failing to help him and passing on the other side of the road so as not to get involved. The next person to pass by in the Parable of the Good Samaritan is a Levite, and he does exactly what the priest did: he passes by without showing any compassion. The next person to come by is the Samaritan, the one least likely to have shown compassion for the man. The ‘Good Samaritan’ saw only a person in dire need of as-sistance, and assist him he did, above and beyond the minimum required. He dressed the man’s wounds with wine (to disinfect) and oil (to sooth the pain). He put the man on his animal and took him to an inn for a time of healing and paid the innkeeper with his own money. He then went beyond common decency and told the innkeeper to take good care of the man, and he would pay for any ex-tra expenses on his return trip. The Samaritan saw his neighbour as someone who was in need.
GOOD SAMARITANS AT SACRED HEART
Next week, as a part of their Professional and Personal Development Day, the staff at Sacred Heart will be ‘Good Samaritans’ as they work together on a project called ‘Schoolbags for Jesus’. This project aims to enable children from around the world to receive an education and break the cycle of poverty. Each bag will have the essentials for a child to attend school such as pens, pencils, exercise books – the things we sometimes take for granted!
We ask that the school community support the staff by donating any of the following sup-plies which the staff will collate into the drawstring bags ready for delivery:
48 page notebooks
Pencils – lead and/or coloured
Sharpeners
Erasers
Black pens
Blue pens
Crayons
Ruler
Stickers
Small story books
Shirt or cap
Small toy
To assist with the delivery of the bags, the school community may also make a donation of a gold coin. There is a donation box in the front office.
The drawstring bags will be collated by staff on Friday afternoon and delivered to ‘Buckets for Jesus’ who are responsible for the Schoolbags for Jesus project. We will keep you posted on the progress of the project.
FIRST COMMUNION Congratulations to our Year 4 students who, along with children from the parish, received the sacrament of First Communion at a beautiful mass on Sunday afternoon. It was wonderful to see them so proud and ready to receive Jesus in the bread and wine and it was also fantastic to see the support they had from family, friends, school and parish community as the church was overflowing! Thank you to Mr Milne, Mrs Zdravic, Mrs Wladyka, Mr Maher, Mrs Vinci and Mrs Hall who helped prepare the children, the choir and the mass. Thank you also to the choir and altar servers who took time out of their weekend to support their peers. YEAR 6 DEBATING This Thursday students from Year 6 will be representing Sacred Heart against Aquinas College in our annual debating competition. Students from our school will go to Aquinas for the debate, while some Aquinas stu-dents attend Sacred Heart to debate at our school. We wish them all well in this exciting competition. YEAR 2 ASSEMBLY Year 2 will be presenting the last assembly for the term this Friday at 8.30am. All parents and friends are welcome to attend. LIFE EDUCATION VAN VISIT Beginning this Friday and continuing till next Thursday, each class from K-Yr 6 will be participating in Life Ed-ucation van presentations. The session topics range from making and maintaining friendships, healthy life-styles and drug awareness education. Your children may mention Harold from the van, so please chat with them about what they have learnt. There will also be a FREE parent session where the parents can hear the same information that their children have heard and are able to ask questions of the presenters. The parent session will take place next Wednesday morning from 8.15-9.00am in the van set up on the oval. Please take advantage of this great information session. DRESS IN YOUR FAVOURITE SPORTS TEAM DAY Next Thursday is Dress in Your Favourite Sports Team Day (previously known as AFL Day). Children are asked to wear the colours of their favourite sporting team – netball, football, rugby union or league, cricket, basketball, etc and donate a gold coin to St Vinnie’s. Please see the attached lunch order special for the day. These lunch orders are due back Friday 15 September.
ANNUAL GREAT BOOK SWAP CHALLENGE On Tuesday 17 October we will be hosting our Annual Great Book Swap Challenge. What a great oppor-tunity for you to clean out your collection of books over the holidays and send them in. On the day of the book swap children will be able to purchase a pre-loved book for a gold coin donation which will go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Enjoy the sunshine!!
Assistant Principal
The Year Two students went to the Literature Centre in Fremantle to discover how you go about making a picture book.
At first we thought the wheels on the bus weren't going to go
round at all as someone had parked in the wrong spot and our bus was stuck for 40 minutes!! We handled it beautifully and played a
few games as we sat on the bus waiting.......and waiting........
Finally, we began our journey and arrived in Fremantle in record time! Two lovely ladies showed us the process of thinking of an
idea and all the steps it takes to actually make a book!
FIRST COMMUNION
First Communion
Congratulations to our students who received Jesus for the first time in the Sacrament of First Holy Commun-
ion on Sunday. It was a beautiful celebration and the children looked amazing and conducted themselves rev-
erently throughout the Mass! After lunch on Monday, the celebrations continued as the students indulged in a
delectable chocolate cake made for them to commemorate the occasion.
Murphy House Mass
Last Friday, we were led in a beautiful mass by Murphy House. Thank you to the teachers, students & choir
who made the mass that extra bit special. Thank you also to our Faithful Faces group who led the school in a
reflective dramatisation of the Gospel.
LifeLink Garden
Spring is in the air and our LifeLink hearts are in full bloom. If you are walking past the office, why not have a
look at our LifeLink garden which will be on display for the next week.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS
TERRACYCLE
Sacred Heart now has two TerraCycle bins on site, outside the LIBRARY.
Our school earns money for each piece of recycling sent to TerraCycle!
We have already sent over 10 boxes to be recycled, so keep up the
terrific effort!
We are hoping to raise even more money so it can be added to our St Vincent
de Paul Society donation at the end of the year.
The first box recycles oral care products such as old toothbrushes, floss con-
tainers, empty toothpaste tubes and caps, empty packaging from toothpaste and toothbrushes. We have
one month left to get in as much ORAL CARE recycling as possible, to go into the draw to win
a park bench for our school!
The second box recycles empty beauty care packaging and much like the oral care recycling, we earn
money for every kilogram collected. Accepted waste includes:
Cosmetics packaging such as used lipstick and lip gloss, mascara, eye shadow, bronzer, founda-
tion, eyeliner, eye shadow, lip liner, and concealer packaging.
Hair care packaging such as used shampoo and conditioner bottles
and caps, hair gel tubes and caps, hair spray and hair treatment packag-
ing.
Skin care packaging such as lip balm, face moisturiser, face and body
wash soap dispensers and tubes, body and hand lotion dispensers and
tubes and shaving foam packaging.
YEAR SIX DEBATING
The Year Six classes have been busy preparing for their interschool debates against Aquinas College on
Thursday. Students have worked in groups of three to research plan and deliver debates on the following
topics:
That zoos are a form of animal cruelty
That all Australian children should participate in organised team sports
That packaged food should be banned from school lunch boxes
That all students should be required to volunteer in the community
That social media is a waste of time
We are looking forward to seeing our school leaders use their speaking and listening skills and persuasive
writing techniques to argue their points!

House Carnival 2017
Last week the 2017 Athletics Carnival was held over three days.
On Monday the Year 4-6 students participated in their field events and the 400m. Congratulations to all the stu-dents as the results were outstanding. I was also especially proud of the students endeavour during the 400m event.
On Tuesday the Year 4-6 students went across to the high school to run the 200m. It was great to see all the cheering that occurred as students supported their peers. It was especially positive for those students who strug-gled to complete the event and were able to hear their class mates chant their name to help them to the finish line.
On Thursday the students in PP-6 competed in the 100m and team games. Congratulations to all the students who competed to the best of their ability. Thank you to all the faction captains and those who were in the cheer squad for creating such a tremendous atmosphere with the new cheers.
Thank you very much to all the parents who volunteered their time over the three days of the carnival. It was great to have so many volunteers and some new parents put their name down to help. It is greatly appreciated.
Interschool squad information has already been given out. Training commenced on Wednesday 13
September.

This term, we will be trialling a Homework Club for students who:
need extra time to finish their homework and assignments
need a quiet place to complete homework and assignments
need access to the internet to finish homework and assignments
The Homework Club will run on Wednesdays from 2:45pm - 3:20pm in 6B and will be supervised by a junior and senior school teacher. Students will go straight from class to 6B and will need to be picked up by their par-ents at 3:20pm from the drop off.
Students need to come prepared with their diary or homework folder and any homework that needs to be completed. There is no need to sign up - just come along whenever you need to. Next week is the last week and we will advise if it is continuing next term.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs Bathols in Year Six.

DODGEBALL
This coming Friday 15 September brings to a close our an-nual DODGEBALL Competition between the students and the staff of Sacred Heart Primary School. Immediately follow-ing the Assembly will feature a few exhibition games. These include a rematch of the SHPS Staff vs. the SHPS parents-a fierce game that was contested last year, with the teachers being victorious. No doubt the parents will be wanting some revenge, especially against the likes of our extremely compet-itive Mr. Landers and Mr. Maher. The final decider will also take place. This will feature the two remaining student teams. Please show your support by attending the and cheering on the teams.
Soccer goals
We must be having a soccer frenzy this year with the amount of students playing at both recess and lunch. It is wonderful to see so many kids enjoying a wonder-ful sport and seeing such a mix of both boys and girls. Due to the enormous de-mands by the students, the school has decided to purchase extra soccer goals to cater for the various year levels. Further to this, now that Athletics has ended, we will mark out areas on the oval to make adequate space for students and try to ensure that students play safely. Special thanks to Mr. Colin Stillwell for sourcing out the new soccer goals.

@SHPSThornlie
Do you have a twitter account? How can 500 million people be wrong?
Twitter generates 340 million tweets a day and handles over 1.6 billion search queries a day.
With this in mind Sacred Heart Primary School decided to get on board and have a presence on Twitter to give our community the opportunity to share in our day-to-day school events.
What is the primary purpose of the Sacred Heart Primary School Twitter Page?
The school Twitter page will be used principally to be followed by staff, parents and other professionals in order to advertise the excellent work by staff, children, parents and our school community.
Similarly, it will also contain information detailing special events in school. The aim of this is to run along-side more traditional methods like sending home Newsletters, and not to replace it.
Aims of Using Twitter
To quickly share and celebrate school achievements, successes and updates.
To demonstrate safe and responsible use of social media.
To promote Sacred Heart Primary School as a forward thinking and progressive school through our use of 21st Century technology.

Many thanks to our volunteers this term for their assistance with our Tuesday Pop Up specials and our Sports Carnival. Your help is very much appreciated.
Lucy and I will be working on the Summer Menu for Term 4. We would love to hear some suggestions with what your child would like to see on the Menu. Suggestions can be brought to the canteen or put into your classroom lunch box/trolley.
As it is almost the end of term, some menu items may not be available as we will be creating a new menu for Term 4. Please provide a second option for your child. Online ordering options will be updated daily with what we have available.
Please remember we can ONLY accept Australian Currency in the canteen.
Please do not send foreign currency.
Code is the language used to instruct computers.
The aim of coding is to equip students with the skills they need for computing and help them to
problem solve, become logical thinkers and to create.
“We don’t want to live in a world where young people just consume the web,” explains Clare Sutcliffe, Co-
Founder and CEO of Code Club. “We want to help them actively create the content they are engaging with.”
Students are creating programs with specific goals and getting familiar with concepts including sequence,
selection and repetition in programs. They are developing their logical reasoning skills and learning to use
websites.
SCHOOL FEES School Fees are overdue and require prompt payment unless prior arrangements have been
made with the office, as it is the end of term next week. Thank you
