shy1986 is almost gone I hope you enjoyed the Christmas dinner party

am happy that Harilyn Lynch could be there to present the Brian Lynch Award This years recipient was Alan Atwood Thanks again Alan for all that time and effort and a job well dom

January 18th is our rally date Hope you are getting in the mood for this event Dont be timid - the rally will not be difficult and should be a lot of fun The end point is at a restaurantwith ~ moderately-priced and varied menu from which you can order your dinner By the time you haVEgt eaten the results will have been calculated and the winners announced Good luck

On February 15th our mid-month activity will take us to Picacho Peak for a pot-luck with our friends of Cactus Corvair from Phoenix

At the November meeting we received a $200 c heck from the Cactus Corvair Club for our support of their mini-convention ~Phoenix Returns Thank you again for your efforts and thanks Cactus for your generosi ty

liked the tech session at the last meeting Larry Dandridge came up with a logic a l so lution to a continuing problem in which several cars periodicall y s top runnlng He found that the car had a clogged filter screen at the yas tank L~rry made a riM With an American Mo t ors scre~n

In reading some of the other chaptprs~ news letters I found the same problem and solution written up in the North Texas chapter publication and if my memory serves me correctly it originall y came from the San Diego chapter pUb

THAT OLD ADAGE about beauty being only skin deep can t be appl ied to the

1965 Corvair Lurking under those clea n functional bea utiful lines are iI

fe w line e ng inee r ing innovations From Ihe au lO e nthusiasts view these LOa c an be c o ns idered beaut ifu l

St a rling wi th the has c ch ass is we nOle th at the Corva ir st ill uses uniti zed cons truct lon But this new chassis has neen stiffened quite a hil a fac t shown oy the cho ice of modelS availa ble thi s yea r hlttrdlOps a nd converli b les onl y Yo ull remember thaI earlier coupes and seuans had pillared roofs These were thin but they m ade a s tronge r bod y shy

chass is un it W itho ut Ihe extra stiffness gi ven hy the roof stru cture the chassis platform liaS 10 he Monger Anu theyve done it without adding a lot o f extru weight The 1965s are about 50 pounds heav ier (at mos t) than earl ier Corvai rs anu all [hi s weight iJn l in the chassis

We rook the picillre on p~ge 50 back at the G M Pra ying G rounus when we drove the 65s for the firsl lime It s hows the Corvair in ltI wide sweepin g turn with the rea r end htlng OUI slightly a nu (he right front wheel o ff the grounu This CorYair was tr a yeljng 7 5 mph in thi s corner when we purposel y tweaked it sideways to test the new suspension s recovera bil ity and contrOllability As a kind o f added bonus we also found out tha t the new chassis has a high degree

o f to rs ional stiffness-as attested by the Iloilling wheel

The front suspension foll ows the same general des ign of earlier models Spring ra les have been soft ened but nOI for the us ual reason-not to get a softer r ide In this case it was necessary to tune the characteristi cs of the fro nt to a po int where they d he more compatib le with the ch anged characteristics of the new rear suspensio n The diameler of the front anli 4 roll ba r (810 inch) remains the same and the car shows good ro ll st iffness

Big chan ges at the front ure reduced steeringmiddotwheel turns between locks fo r - more precise control and a reduc tion in the ca rs turning diameter Both these changes came th rough modifieatio ns to

the sleering arms and steering geometry Rallyisls will welcome the ncW speedshyometer drive-off (he left front wheel This eliminates any false reading that coulu result from rear-wheel slippage at high speeds with the old drive II also eliminates the need to change speedo urive gears if rear-axle gears ltIre changed

The most outstanding change is of course the new rear suspension In 1960 Corvair was the first mass-proshyduced American passenger car 10 offer a swing-axle independent rear suspenshysion Now five years later it becomes the first mass-produceu American passhysenger car to offer lull independent rear suspension 1n stating this were considshyering the Corvette a limited-production specialized vehicle

The new suspension is very much like the Sting Ray Corvelles-and it should he because they both had the same granufather the old eERV 1 This youn remember was an experimental rearshyengined race car that was developed as an engineering project by Zora ArkusshyDunlov and his group at the Chevrolet Engineering Development Labs

Theres really only one major differshyence hetween the two sllspensions Corshyvette uses a transverse leaf spring while the Corvair uses coils at each wheel Both have Ihe axle half-shafts as upper comrol arms and combine them with unshyequal-length non-parallel single lower control arms These four arms comshy[Ilelely control all lateral wheel motion Driving and braking lorces are taken through single trailing control arrnsshyone on each side The Corvair also uses smail rubber-mounteu truss rods exshytending in from each trailing arm to the main rear cross member Thltse were necshyessary to dampen out any lateral moveshyment that might occur at the trailing nrm pivot points (which have softer rubshyher bushings than those useu in the Corvelte to CUI uown road noise and vibration)

The new Corvair suspension is easily and readily adjustable The lower conshytrol arms have an eccentric at each outer pivot point that controls camber Toe-in is adjusted by siolled provisions al the front mounling points of the trailing arms Static camber selling is one uegree negHive Under deflection as in a hard corner the camber of the oUlSide whe stuys negative (as does the insiue wheel) which produces more cornering force

As we mentioneu we checked the Corvair oul under some prelly extrcme hundling conditions In the test urive we mentioneu il look only a sligh 1lick of the sleering wheel 10 gel everything straightened ouL The curs handling is completely predictable and very stable at all speeds Not counting the Corvetre Corvair has the closesl thing to pershyformance handling characteristics youll

48 MOTO R TREND OCTOBER 1964

chass is un it W itho ut Ihe extra stiffness gi ven hy the roof stru cture the chassis platform liaS 10 he Monger Anu theyve done it without adding a lot o f extru weight The 1965s are about 50 pounds heav ier (at mos t) than earl ier Corvai rs anu all [hi s weight iJn l in the chassis
