INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Women Worth Celebrating! Last week people everywhere celebrated 100 years of International Women’s Day … 100 years of women inspiring the world. We at Mitcham honoured the day by asking the girls to take a photo of a woman that inspires them and tell us why that woman is such a source of inspiration. We then selected the best images to make up our exhibition – ‘100 Years, 100 Women, 100 Voices’ which was on display in conjunction with award-winning Adelaide photographer, Jennie Groom’s exhibitions ‘Women@Work ‘ and ‘Show Us Your Riffs.’ Earlier in the day we also had a wonderful assembly in which three Old Scholars returned to tell us about some of the women who have inspired them and shaped them into who they are today. Singer/Songwriter, Georgia Germein, took time out of her busy schedule to come and share the incredible gift of her voice with us. She sang a heartfelt song that she wrote about her experiences in Nepal while travelling as the World Vision Youth Ambassador last year. And despite the rain, the girls were treated to a brilliant performance during lunch time, by all-girl Adelaide rock band, ‘Lipsmack.’ It was an incredible day and it all got me thinking … who are the women in my life who have inspired me? In what ways have they inspired me? How have they shaped me? How am I different because of them? Then I started thinking, do they even know that I feel that way about them? Have I ever told them how they’ve inspired me? So many women have contributed to making the world what it is today … but what about the women who have contributed to my life? The women who have contributed to your life? International Women’s Day is not only a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of women around the world and throughout history, but also to acknowledge and say thankyou to the women who make our lives a better place, the women who help us to be the best that we can be. They are definitely worth celebrating!

AIM FOR ADELAIDE A number of Year 12 students had an opportunity to attend Aim for Adelaide Study Skills that took place on Thursday 10 March 2011. This was a valuable opportunity to visit the University of Adelaide, become familiar with the campus and gain further advice on making the most of the year and preparing for possible tertiary study. The first session started at 10:00am at the University of Adelaide and the first workshop was about time management and exam preparation. This was a great workshop as it gave us tips on how to keep organised, how to utilise our time effectively and how to keep ourselves motivated to achieve our goals. It also gave us several guidelines on revision strategies and how continuous preparation works the best for most students. The second workshop was about how to write outstanding essays. This session provided us with valuable information about how to do effective research and structure our essays. Lastly, we were given helpful information and guidance about tertiary education. Overall, it was a very informative day and gave all Year 12 students who attended new motivation to succeed in their future.

PASSION FOR DANCE I am going to tell you about how dance makes me feel. Recently, I went to Womad and everywhere I looked people were free. They were enjoying the music and gliding through the air. They were 100% happy and without a care in the world. This is exactly how dance makes me feel. It is impossible to describe in one word, but dance for me is something special that makes me feel exactly myself and all-round fabulous. Dance holds people together and it makes every day more fun. Anyone can dance, from the ‘golden oldies’ in a retirement village to the upcoming ballerinas going to their weekly classes. Dance is there for anyone to enjoy. Another aspect of dance that makes me astoundingly happy is watching dance. I really enjoy watching contemporary dances, because they grip me unlike any other style of dance. In my opinion, dance is happiness. Yours truly, Year 9 Dance Student MGHS
