As we begin 2019, we have a chance to look back at what has already happened since the Jewish New
Year three months ago. These last months were a time of new possibilities and celebrations as well tre-
mendous loss and frustrations. As we stand at the beginning of a new secular year we look out to the un-
known and our minds fill with more questions and uncertainty.
On one thing you can be rest assured –Temple Beth Ami continues to be a source of strength to Santa
Clarita and beyond. Our synagogue community continues to be a leader in Jewish education for all ages.
We have multiple 12 Step meetings each and every week at our facility including AA, Al-Anon and OA. This
coming year we are expanding the Jewish Meditation classes with Rabbi Michael Salonius which have
brought literally hundreds of new people from diverse backgrounds into our little shul. We continue to house homeless fami-
lies this year as part of Family Promise. Our facility, though small on size, has a huge impact on our community.
Please keep Temple Beth Ami in mind as you make end of the year charitable donations: www.templebethami.org/support-
tba.html. Your generosity has helped us come so far, enabled us to help so many and we know we will be there for challenges
in the future.
A great way to support and celebrate TBA is Casino Night, Saturday, February 2nd
starting at 7 pm, at the Tesoro Clubhouse. A
wonderful evening of fun and friends and one of TBA’s biggest events of this year. This is a great chance to enjoy playing
games of chance with some wonderful prizes and auction items, including 4 Dodger tickets, 2 roundtrip tickets anywhere
Southwest Airlines flies in the USA and vacation packages. Reduced price tickets available now: https://www.eventbrite.com/

Temple Beth Ami begins 2019 with great events, and many more are being planned throughout the next 12 months. We hope
you will a find a way to join us in these activities and festivities. Whatever this secular year holds for us as a community, a peo-
ple and a nation, we will all be better off meeting the challenges and opportunities ahead together. May 2019 be a more
peaceful and successful one than the one that just passed. Peace, Health and Blessings to all of you.

As we enter this new year of 2019, it’s traditional to reflect on what’s been going on in our lives and the
world around us in the outgoing year, and envision what opportunities lie in the year ahead (whether you
have New Year’s resolutions or not is another topic altogether). Of course, this practice of looking both back-
wards and forwards in time at this time of year is nothing new. After all, the name of the first calendar
month, “January” is derived from Janus, the Greek and Roman god with two faces, one looking to the past,
the other to the future.
Moreover, with the winter holidays now behind us, we now have can take a break from the often-hectic tumult of these
events and allow more time and attention to both reflection and planning. In fact, the winter season is almost made-to-order
for taking a breather. The shorter days and colder weather coaxes us to slow down a bit and even better yet, get some things
done on our to-do lists and “someday” lists that we don’t often get around to other, busier times of the year.
So what does this mean for us TBA members? Why, lots! It gives us a great opportunity to take advantage of those gems that
our synagogue community offers us. Naturally, that includes our Shabbat services and upcoming spring Jewish holidays such
as Purim and Passover. Beyond that, how about checking out other opportunities, such as our Tuesday morning and Wednes-
day evening adult education classes? The fact that you’re reading this newsletter suggests that you’re wanting to find out
more of what’s happening. Don’t forget to read that weekly E-blast announcing other upcoming events!
By all means, if you haven’t done so already, be sure to get your tickets for the Casino Night coming up soon on Saturday eve-
ning, February 2! This will be a fun and exciting event including dinner, dessert, silent auction and an ideal venue to meet and
mingle with fellow members and guests of our TBA community. You can register for the Casino Night conveniently using the
“TICKETS” selection in the Casino Night E-blast announcement. Why not do it now?
I look forward to joining with you at these upcoming TBA events offered by our wonderful synagogue. Meanwhile, I wish you
a all a healthy and prosperous 2019!

Religious School
Shalom TBA Families,
As we begin our 2019 year, I am thrilled to share some of the amazing moments we’ve recently ex-
perienced in our school and share some incredible opportunities coming up in the next few weeks.
Our kids enjoyed celebrating Chanukah together through music, crafts, dreidel games, sufganiyot,
and a special treat bag from TBA’s Sisterhood. We had a great Barnes & Noble Bookfair and many
exciting programs throughout the week. Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate. Our Gan class made these
adorable latke frying plan menorahs!
Tu B’Shevat is just around the corner and we
need everyone’s help to donate items for our very special seder. Please use the SignUp Genius link to help with this
event. Notice the schedule change for Sunday, January 27th. Hours for all students K-7 are 9:30-11:00 (You can drop
kids/items off at 9:15am). Thank you in advance. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c4fa5af23a7f85-tubshevat1.
Students will also be doing some work around the synagogue with our planter boxes and succulents.
February has several exciting events for our families. On Friday, Feb. 1st we will have our Family Shabbat at 7 pm and
all Gan students should be there to participate. On Feb. 8th at 8 pm, the Hey class will have their Shabbat service.
Please remember all students grades 4-7 should be in attendance. Parents of the Hey students are asked to provide for
the oneg. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0c4fa5af23a7f85-heyshabbat. The Gan class will be experiencing an
interactive Shabbat workshop on Sunday, February 10th from 9 to 11am. The entire family is invited to attend. Please
RSVP to [email protected] by Feb. 3rd.
Our Ignite group was very busy during Thanksgiving and worked with the Thankful Giving organization to help feed
many of our first responders, homeless, and hungry in the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys. Our teens, prepped,
packaged, delivered and cleaned on 2 different days in order to give back.
Torah Teens with Rabbi Mark will be on Sunday, January 13th and Sun-
day, February 3rd from 1-2:30 pm, lunch is provided. Consider sending your teen for a great discussion and fun with
their Jewish friends. On Thursday, January 17th from 6-7:30 pm the teens will meet for their monthly meeting. At that
time, they will pick their event for February 9th. Their February meeting will be on the 21st. Come and hang out, play
games, and give suggestions on what you would like to see happen with our teen program.

Sisterhood
Greetings women of TBA.
January is well on its way and already our mah jong day o' fun is on the books. As always we had a
good time, good eats, and good friends. It is our major fundraiser for sisterhood, so I look forward
to sharing the results with you.
Our upcoming events are:
• January 19 is our non-fiction book club. Contact [email protected] for more information.
• January 25 is the Sisterhood Potluck Shabbat dinner. Watch for a SignupGenius, but mark your calendar now so you can
be a part of this terrific way to welcome Shabbat.
We start February off with the Temple Casino Night on Saturday, February 2. I hope to see all of you there.
The Hanukkah party was a good night. As always the white elephant and Hanukkah cocktails filled the evening with laughter.
Is there an event you would like to see on our calendar? Let me know; we are always looking for great events for women or
couples and for more ways to get people involved. Happy 2019.
