This fact is clearly depicted in the parable illustrated in St. Luke 13. Once a landlord had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He anxiously waited for the tree to get fruited. Expectations grew as each year passed. At last with a heavy heart he decided to chop down his favorite tree as it was fruitless. Knowing how determined his master was, the vinedresser went and pleaded to wait a little longer. ‘Master, we can wait for one more year. I’ll dig around it, put on extra manure and will give some extra care’, vinedresser told his master. The tree was fortunate enough to get one more year. Still if it doesn’t bear fruit, it will soon end up in its master’s fireplace. It’s a serious matter of concern as the fig tree symbolizes our own lives. This New Year urges us to examine ourselves that Am I just taking up space? Am I bearing fruit for the kingdom of God? Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. - John. 15:4. When we abide in the Lord and in his word we can bear fruit through the power of the holy spirit. The attitude of vinedresser deserves a standing ovation. He is a man of hope. Orison Swett Marden said, ‘there is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow’. The vinedresser was giving the tree another chance out of his mercy. We are taking the New Year gift for granted. Let’s remember God’s grace and His long suffering. We must not presume upon the kind- ness and long suffering of the Lord, for there will be a final judgment. As we enter into this New Year let’s submit ourselves into the mighty hands of our Almighty and we should bear fruit for His glory. Let’s decide: Like Enoch – walk in daily fellowship with my Heavenly Father.

FROM THE VICAR’S DESK

Dearly beloved in Christ

‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig

around it and fertilize it. If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut

it down.’ Luke. 13: 8, 9

New Year is again knocking at our doors. It’s time to recall and

also to thrive for a new beginning. Let’s thank God for his sustained guid-

ance in our lives. Each New Year is God’s gift. We should have been dis-

carded long ago but still we are being preserved by God’s mercy. This fact

is clearly depicted in the parable illustrated in St. Luke 13. Once a landlord

had a fig tree planted in his vineyard. He anxiously waited for the tree to

get fruited. Expectations grew as each year passed. At last with a heavy

heart he decided to chop down his favorite tree as it was fruitless. Knowing

how determined his master was, the vinedresser went and pleaded to wait

a little longer. ‘Master, we can wait for one more year. I’ll dig around it,

put on extra manure and will give some extra care’, vinedresser told his

master. The tree was fortunate enough to get one more year. Still if it

doesn’t bear fruit, it will soon end up in its master’s fireplace.

It’s a serious matter of concern as the fig tree symbolizes our own

lives. This New Year urges us to examine ourselves that Am I just taking

up space? Am I bearing fruit for the kingdom of God? Remain in me, as I

also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in

the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. - John.

15:4. When we abide in the Lord and in his word we can bear fruit through

the power of the holy spirit.

The attitude of vinedresser deserves a standing ovation. He is a

man of hope. Orison Swett Marden said, ‘there is no medicine like hope,

no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something

better tomorrow’. The vinedresser was giving the tree another chance out

of his mercy. We are taking the New Year gift for granted. Let’s remember

God’s grace and His long suffering. We must not presume upon the kind-

ness and long suffering of the Lord, for there will be a final judgment. As

we enter into this New Year let’s submit ourselves into the mighty hands

of our Almighty and we should bear fruit for His glory. Let’s decide:

Like Enoch – walk in daily fellowship with my Heavenly Father.

2

Like Abraham – trust implicitly in my God.

Like Job – be patient under all circumstances.

Like Joseph – turn my back on all seductive advances.

Like Moses – choose to suffer rather than enjoy the pleasures

of sin.

Like Caleb and Joshua – refuse to be discouraged because

of numbers.

Like Gideon – advance, even though my friends are few.

Like David – lift up my eyes to the hills from which comes

my help.

Like Jehoshaphat – prepare my heart to seek the Lord.

Like Daniel – commune with God at all times and in all places.

Like Andrew – strive to lead others to Christ.

Like Stephen – manifest a forgiving spirit towards all who

seek my hurt.

Like Paul – forget those things that are behind and

press forward.

(Adapted from Gospel Lite)

I thank all the executive committee members especially the vice

president, the secretary, the trustees and the lay leaders for their sincere

efforts and I wish the upcoming executive committee and the office bear-

ers a fruitful year to work for His Glory.

May the eyes of the Lord, our God be always upon us from the

beginning of this year. I wish all of you a blessed new year.

With love and prayers,

Rev. Sajit Thomas John

Vicar.

YOUTH CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

“I hereby command you: Be strong and courageous; do not be

frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you

wherever you go” Joshua 1:9 (NRSV)

Joshua was entrusted to lead the Israelites into the promise

land without the leadership of Moses. As he recalled the challenges

that he faced in the past, as he reflected on his own abilities, he prob-

ably felt that he was not capable of the task ahead of him. It was at

3

this time that the word of the Lord came to him. The Lord’s words

and the guarantee of the Lord’s presence enabled Joshua to go

forward to accomplish what he had to do.

The reason that Joshua was not to be afraid or dismayed was

because the Lord was going to be with him. This is similar to the

experience of the disciples at the end of the Gospel of Matthew.

Jesus told the disciple to go into the world and teach the people the

word and will of God, making disciples of people from all

nations. With the commission was the promise that “I am with you

always, to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20).”

We as Christians are called to believe in God and do the tasks

that God has called us to do. This New Year we will all face trails

and difficulties, but remember that God is with us. Remember that

God will empower us. Remember faith does not make things easy,

faith makes things possible.

Rev. Shibi Abraham,

Youth Chaplain

Secretary’s Corner May I take this opportunity to wish all the Parish Members a happy,

healthy and blessed New Year. I am currently out of town (in India) and

will be back by mid- January 2019. Further I want to thank and appreciate

all the 2018 Office bearers, Executive Committee Members for their

dedication and hard work during the year 2018.

On a personal note, I want to thank Mr. Mathewkutty Easow (Roy) for his

hard work and commitment during the year 2018 as he will also be

covering my responsibilities until my return to office.

I feel blessed in the New Year as I will be serving the Parish on another

term and I assure you that I will do the best in my capacity as your Parish

Secretary for the year 2019.

May God Almighty continue to bless us as a Diaspora Community in this

great land of opportunities.

Love and prayers
