Fun with fives

I am learning to work out my times six, seven, and eight tables from my times five tables.

Page 2: Fun with fives I am learning to work out my times six, seven, and eight tables from my times five tables

Fly cards look like this.

5

They can have up to 5 objects on one side and up to 5 objects on the reverse side.

This card has 3 objects on the reverse.

3

This card represents 8. It has 5 objects on the front and 3 on the back.

Page 3: Fun with fives I am learning to work out my times six, seven, and eight tables from my times five tables

Let’s imagine we had 6 fly flips with 7 circles on them. There are 5 circles on the front and 2 circles on the back. How many circles are there in total?

5

First let’s work out how many there are on the front.

5 5 5 5 5

6 X 5 = 30

6 X 7 = ?

Now let’s turn them over and work out how many there are on the back.

2 2 2 2 2 2

6 X 2 = 12Now add the two amounts together 6 X 5 = 30 and 6 X 2 = 12.

30 + 12 = 42

That means 6 X 7 = 42

6 X 7 is the same as (6 X 5) + (6 X 2)

Page 4: Fun with fives I am learning to work out my times six, seven, and eight tables from my times five tables

Let’s imagine we had 4 fly flips with 8 circles on them. There are 5 circles on the front and 3 circles on the back. How many circles are there in total?

5

First let’s work out how many there are on the front.

5 5 5

4 X 5 = 20

4 X 8 = ?

Now let’s turn them over and work out how many there are on the back. 4 X 3 = 12

Now add the two amounts together 4 X 5 = 20 and 4 X 3 = 12.

20 + 12 = 32

That means 4 X 8 = 32

4 X 8 is the same as (4 X 5) + (4 X 3)

The questions to the left can be made easier by imagining them on fly flips. Which questions go together?

1) 3 X 7 = ?

2) 4 X 8 = ?

3) 6 X 7 = ?

4) 8 X 6 = ?

5) 4 X 6 = ?

(3 X 5) + (3 X 2) = 21

(4 X 5) + (4 X 3) = 32

(6 X 5) + (6 X 2) = 42

(8 X 5) + (8 X 1) = 48

(4 X 5) + (4 X 1) = 24

Now try these questions on your own.

1) 3 X 8 = ?

2) 6 X 6 = ?

3) 3 X 6 = ?

4) 4 X 7 = ?

5) 6 X 8 = ?
