Happy Friday, Badgers J

Well done for another brilliant week!

Riddle of the day – Before Mount Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain

on Earth?

Fun fact of the day – Hippos have pink milk!

Let’s get started J

Your first daily dose of half an hour of BRAIN POWER! Let’s mix things up a little Badgers…

Keep a record in your home learning book of the activities that you complete this week.

Please check out the class page for July’s reading challenge. How many of you can get bingo across the month? I am confident you can all get a full house throughout July.

Remember to keep Miss Ayers updated on your progress with evidence so that you can earn your rewards!

July’s reading challenge is up on the class pages section of the website. Please do take time each day to complete some of the activities and let Miss Ayers know how you are getting on – especially if you manage to get bingo!

Friday 17th July is World Emoji Day. Can you invent your own emoji to describe your feelings towards lockdown or home learning? There may be a few varying ones! There is also an emoji code cracking mission on the next slide.

Joe Wicks has reduced his weekly workouts to 3 a week. Why not become the replacement PE teacher on the days he is off? Remember – you can check out all his workouts on his YouTube page!

Miss Ayers is running low on riddles for our daily PowerPoints. Can you find any and email them to her? Yours might get included on the home learning presentations!

Pick one of the spellings from the Year 5/6 spelling mat that you are unsure of. Try writing a tongue twister for this spelling and test somebody in your house if they can say it 5 times in a row.

Go on Maths Frame Multiplication Check and see how many times table questions you can answer correctly out of 25. You will have 4 seconds to answer each question: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/477/Multiplication-Tables-Check

Spend 30 minutes dedicated to mindfulness –you may want to do some yoga, colouring, reflection or meditation – whatever it is that keeps you calm and relaxed.

Visit the Harry Potter At Home Hub and listen to this week’s chapter of the Philosopher’s Stone: https://www.wizardingworld.com/collections/harry-potter-at-home

Saturday 18th July marks Mandela Day. Find out some facts about Nelson Mandela and his accomplishments in life and then create your own acrostic poem to present your findings using the word ‘Mandela’.

English – Writing focusToday is a ‘free-choice’ day! We have used this bingo sheet a couple of times during home learning when we have come to the end of a unit but today, I would like you to have a go at an activity that you haven’t yet tackled.

Maybe you could produce a newspaper report, produce a survival guide for lockdown, write a short biography about a chosen person of your interest or select a well-known fairy tale or nursery rhyme of your choice and update it to a modern version.

Whatever activity you choose to complete, please email Miss Ayers a picture of your work by 2pm on Friday so that she can see which activity you chose to complete. The email address is [email protected].

Maths – Mathematical InvestigationWith summer fast approaching, the last week and a half will focus on problem solving skills, using all the knowledge you have revised to investigate different areas of maths. This week, we are going to complete some different mathematical activities in our learning. Each day, there will be a mathematical investigation put on the class pages section of the website for you to have a go at.

Please record your workings exactly as you would in your home learning books, showing your calculations and processes in problem solving.• Day 1 – You will use your investigative skills to solve problems in probability using knowledge of

equivalent fractions. You will need to simplify fractions and to reason logically.• Day 2 – You will need to follow instructions to make a Chinese fortune teller and then estimate the

probabilities of getting instructions. You will need to test your theories with numbers.• Day 3 – You will learn how to tackle Sudoku puzzles. You will then experiment with examples

involving Roman numerals, decimal numbers and fractions and - hardest – a mixture of the two!• Day 4 – You will investigate and play a mathematical logic game known as ‘Red – Amber – Green’.

You will use logical reasoning skills to defeat an opponent.• Day 5 – You will explore probability further, this time using coins and dice. You should be able to use

their acquired knowledge of the probable outcomes to win a game.

Afternoon choices

Over the course of the week, you need to spend time completing the set tasks on the following subjects. You may choose which afternoon you would like to tackle each subject as long as by Friday, you have covered them all and have shown completion of the tasks in your book:• Art• French• History/Geography• Science• ICT• Reading comprehension• RRR

See details of this week’s required tasks on the following slides.

Page 15: Well done for another brilliant week! Riddle of the day ... · Times tables Spend 15 minutes practicing your times tables. Times tables ideas: • Complete some of your school times

Weekly tasksArt – Our artist of the week is Jill Townsley.1. As an introductory task, find out 10 facts about her – you may present these in your books however you

wish e.g. fact file, poster, acrostic poem.2. Which piece of art of hers is your favourite? Research this online and then write a paragraph about what it

is that you particularly like about it. Challenge – Can you use technical vocabulary to describe it? E.g. Sculptures, installations, photography, animation.

3. Recreate one of her pieces - this week, you might not want to use your book as many of her works are sculptures! You may use whatever materials you can get your hands on to create your art work – Miss Ayers would love to see any photographs of your work. After you have created your masterpiece, evaluate it, giving yourself three positives and a future target.

Science – Our topic this week is ‘Scientists and Inventors’.1. A solar system is a star and everything which orbits around it. Most stars in the universe have their own

planets orbiting them, which means that there are probably billions of solar systems just in our galaxy, The Milky Way. Pick a planet to make a fact file about ensuring you give accurate information e.g. climate, density, size, distance from the sun/other planets.

2. Neil de Grasse Tyson is the director of the Hayden Planetarium, who became a well-known figure in the Pluto debate. He claims to be instrumental in Pluto being re-classified as a dwarf planet in 2006. He has become very famous for his work on TV and online videos. Can you find out more about the Pluto debate and present your findings (and your own views!) in an interesting way e.g. news report/newspaper?

Page 16: Well done for another brilliant week! Riddle of the day ... · Times tables Spend 15 minutes practicing your times tables. Times tables ideas: • Complete some of your school times

Weekly tasksFrench - Our topic this half term is Time Travelling.1. Read through the separate PowerPoint presentation and listen to the sound files to ensure your

pronunciation is correct.2. Use the DOB cards to complete the activity referenced on the PowerPoint.

History/Geography – Our topic this half term is World War 2.1. We have had World War 2 as our topic for the whole of Summer term so you should now feel confident

about many areas and equipped with lots of knowledge around this time in history! This week, Miss Ayers would like you to make a collective project showing off all that you have learnt about this topic and summarising what you have found out. You may present this however you want to – perhaps a scrap book, a PowerPoint presentation or a film clip with you presenting! Some of the areas we have looked at are:

• Make Do and Mend• The Outbreak of War• Propaganda posters• Blackout• Rationing• Evacuees• The Role of Women• Anne Frank• Leaders

Weekly tasksICT – Our topic this half term is Scratch. If you don’t already have Scratch on your computer, visit this website to use Scratch online: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/?tutorial=getStarted\

This will be your last week on Scratch so take time to complete your game and add the elements you need to make it a fun, interactive game!

Further guidance and a step-by-step guide can be found on the class pages as a separate PowerPoint. This will give you more detail about any of the stages if you need a refresher. If you feel confident with Scratch already, you are more than welcome to experiment and start creating your game.

Weekly tasksReading comprehension.

1) Begin by reading through the text on the next slide.2) Answer the questions carefully in your book, stating the question number and ensuring you answer,

where appropriate, in full sentences.3) Once you have answered all the questions, the answers are underneath the image of the questions. With

an adult, check through your answers and see how you have done.

RRR – Our article this week is article number 29.

1) Each week, we will have a different right as a focus. As with French, there will be a presentation uploaded to the class page on the school website for you to work through. This will give information on the article itself as well as lots of learning ideas for you to have a go at. It is a flexible resource so allows you to dip into the areas you would like to have a go at.

2) Please send pictures to me of any work you complete on this so that I can share it with Mrs Bottle – I know she would be thrilled to see it and we can then share it with on the RRSA (Rights Respecting Schools Award) pages also.
