Czech Republic: Organic and Sustainable Land Management at Apple Farm Dates: 2 nd – 30 th July 2012 Number of Participants: 8 The placement offers participants the opportunity to gain or deepen knowledge and skills in the field of fruit, vegetables and herbs - growing, care, harvesting, processing; to learn about self- sufficiency, sustainability, traditional techniques and uses of natural materials, dendrology and how to apply principles of the organic, biodynamic and permaculture systems. The placement also includes opportunities for varied cultural visits and sport activities. The placement is hosted by Apple Farm, a sustainable small-holding run by Kristyna and Rudolf Zidek. Germany: Woodland Management at Dübener Heide Nature Park Dates: TBC July – August 2012 Number of Participants: 5 Because of the date of the annual 'wood festival' at the end of July, we would like the students to arrive in Germany to incorporate this. The wood festival will be the last weekend in July and to coincide with this event, Peter Kaiser (our principle host) is offering a 7 to 10 day long training / work experience action on 'forest art'. It will involve going to the forest to select a tree / log / wood, for making an art work, working with local artists (especially Wolfgang Köppe) and then positioning the artwork at a forest recreation site. The idea is to use sustainable natural products and make some sort of environmental statement or promotion. The remainder of the content revolves around practical nature conservation in the Dübener Heide Naturpark, including heathland and forest management, working at a village arboretum, making interpretation boards and signs, working on school conservation projects, etc. There will also be the possibility to work on a local Agenda 21 type project, using local and natural materials to build heritage reconstructions (Saxon houses, etc.) to demonstrate sustainability.

Slovakia: Eco-TourismDates: TBC April – May 2012

Number of Participants: 6The DESIRE (Developing Environmental Skills in Rural Europe) placement in Slovakia is hostedby Grampus's long-term partner, the Ipel Union. This NGO was formed in 1992 and has as itsprimary objective the management of the natural and cultural assets of the Ipel river water catchment. The placement is based in the small south Slovakian village of Ipel'ský Sokolec, near to the Hungarian border. The placement has three main parts:

1. In the village there is a recently established community forest of oak, ash, cherry, willow, hornbeam, field maple, tartar maple, poplar and lime, planted by visitors working with local schoolchildren. Attached to the forest is a very small tree nursery. The young forest is to be weeded andhave a series of paths established. There is also a survey needed of the flora and fauna.

2. Between the village and the local town of Šahy, there is a forest of Robinia psuedoaccaciacontaining a forest spring, with picnic benches. The forest was recently coppiced and the springchoked with brushwood. The spring is to be cleared and the picnic benches restored.

3. Close to Šahy and along the Ipel River, which forms the border with Hungary, there is aRAMSAR (wetland) site, managed by the Ipel Union and containing bird-hides, a path andfootbridges. After high water in winter, there is routine maintenance work to be carried out to theinfrastructure. The RAMSAR is important for birds and fish and there is an opportunity to observewildlife and undertake simple survey work.
