Why FutureFLEX?FutureFLEX® Air-Blown Fiber® has become the preferred LAN infrastructure for many of the world’s foremost enterprise networks, including: The Pentagon, CNN, ESPN, ConocoPhillips, Johns Hopkins University, Vancouver International Airport (YVR), MGM Grand, Con Edison, Port of Freeport, Arizona Cardinals Stadium (University of Phoenix), Mayo Clinic, and many more.

With the onslaught of bandwidth-rich services and technologies, uncertain network growth, and the demands of doing more with decreasing budgets, today’s networks require a flexible infrastructure that responds immediately to growing bandwidth requirements and the demands of quick project turnaround in real-time.

FutureFLEX empowers your network infrastructure with a continuously renewable fiber life cycle.

It’s difficult enough to forecast network requirements for the next six months, let alone six years. Traditional cabling infrastructures force IT and facilities managers to make uncertain and costly long-term decisions about what kind of fiber and how much to install for the next 5 to 6 years, paralyzing the network by

limiting change, consigning today’s capital for tomorrow’s unforeseen projects, and risking potential network obsolescence.

Unlike conventional network infrastructures, FutureFLEX’s point-to-point architecture enables any type and amount of fiber to be blown in and blown out anywhere and at any time throughout your campus network in a matter of minutes or hours for fast and easy network upgrades, expansions, and reconfigurations — eliminating the need for and investment in dark fiber.

The revolutionary technology and design of the FutureFLEX system provides:

lVirtually Unlimited Fiber, Bandwidth and Pathway Capacity

lImmediate Network Scalabilityl Installation of the Exact Fiber Types

and Counts Required When & Where Needed in Real-Time

lFast & Easy Fiber Installs, Upgrades, and MACs in Minutes or Hours versus the Weeks or Months Associated with Traditional Cabling

l Quick & Easy Fiber Projects Even in Hard-to-Reach, Sanitized, Dangerous, or Secure Areas

lThe Solution for Congested or Filled Conduit and Duct Bank Problems

l Elimination or Significant Reduction for the Need and Cost of Conduit and Innerduct, and the Installation of New Conduit

lNon-Disruption to the Facility; No Re-entrance into Conduit, Walls, and Ceilings for Fiber Installations, Network Upgrades, or Reconfigurations

l The Solution for Safety Issues in Industrial Plants and the Infectious Disease Control Concerns of Healthcare Facilities

l Environmentally Green Benefits lSavings of 70 to 90% of the Time and

Labor Costs Associated with Traditional Cabling — Yielding Continuous ROI

l …And much more

How FutureFLEX Works…At the heart of the FutureFLEX system is an infrastructure of compact tube cables used in place of traditional innerduct to form the LAN topology. Because the system provides empty tubes that can be used at any time, you don’t need to install additional fiber until you need it. Each tube cable holds up to 19 small individual tubes within a tough outer jacket. Two 19-tube air-blown fiber cables yield 38 pathways within the same conduit space in which conventional

At the heart of the FutureFLEX system is an infrastructure of compact tube cables that can be direct buried, replac-ing both conduit and innerduct for further cost savings. The tube cable is also flexible enough to be installed through an existing conduit pathway.

Any number of tubes can be left empty to ensure room for expansion and enable you to easily add or reroute fiber at any time.

FutureFLEX® Air-Blown Fiber®

The FutureFLEX System complies with all premises networking media stan-dards, and is effective for voice, data and video, as well as HVAC, security, life and safety systems.

Once the tube cable highway is in place, installation of the fiber bundles is fast and easy — typically requiring only two installers. Even if you need to add more tube cable, the process is equally easy and inexpensive.

2

FutureFLEX® Air-Blown Fiber®

Tube cables are joined in tube distribution units (TDUs) using simple push-fit connectors. Splices, the most common site of network failure, are virtually eliminated allowing point-to-point connectivity in the network.

Fiber Termination Units (FTUs) are used to terminate optical fibers from the Air-Blown Fiber bundles. FutureFLEX uses the same type of optical fibers as conventional cables, as well as the same connection and termination methods.

cables yield only 3 — ensuring that you should never again face the cost or need to lay additional conduit.

Once the tube cable is in place, installation of the fiber bundles (available in arrange-ments of up to 24 fibers) is both fast and easy — typically requiring only two installers. Using a cable blowing head, the compact fiber optic bundles are blown through the tube cable on a stream of air or nitrogen gas at speeds up to 150 feet per minute. To change the configuration, fiber bundles can be blown out of the tube cable (and reused) and new fiber bundles blown in — making upgrades, expansions, and network changes fast, easy, and inexpensive.

Rack-mounted Tube Distribution Units are used at tube cable transitions or branching locations. Using simple push-fit connectors, installers can deploy the fiber optic cable bundles to new locations in a matter of minutes. Fiber Termination Units are used to terminate optical fibers from the air-blown fiber bundles. With FutureFLEX, fiber installations are typically splice-free and eliminate the risk of fiber damage that can occur when pulling traditional cable, resulting in decreased attenuation for maxi-mum signal integrity and network reliability.

Network StandardsAt Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corporation, we have long employed rigorous and comprehensive control programs to ensure quality and consistency. The FutureFLEX System complies with all premises network-ing media standards, including the mechani-cal and optical requirements of EIA/TIA 568 and ICEA 640. In addition, FutureFLEX meets UL 1581 (General Purpose), UL 1666 (Riser), and NFPA 262 (Plenum) standards. Our manufacturing facilities are both ISO 9001 and TL-9000 certified.

FutureFLEX is ideal for high-bandwidth voice, data, and video, as well as HVAC, physical security, and automation and control systems. FutureFLEX supports multiple fiber optic cabling topologies, including centralized hub, ring, bus, star and hierarchical star topologies.

Cost Savings and ROIIT and network management departments are often viewed as expense centers, due to the high costs of network and infrastructure projects. With FutureFLEX, the labor cost savings and continuous return on investment

from project to project significantly reduces the overall cost of ownership of the network.

On average, 3000 feet of fiber can be blown with the FutureFLEX system in 30 minutes, using only 2 installers. It typically takes one 8-hour day with a minimum of 4 skilled installers to pull 3,000 feet of fiber optic cable. Typical network upgrades, expan-sions, and reconfigurations with FutureFLEX yield an average of 70 to 90% savings in the time and labor costs of a traditional network infrastructure. These savings can be driven to the bottom-line or reinvested in new emerging technologies or needed software and equipment for the continued advance-ment of the facility and IT department.

And...FutureFLEX gives the network manager the freedom and control over real-time budgeting, network capacity, bandwidth requirements, planning, and fast project turnaround — for a cost-effective, bandwidth -ready, technology-ready LAN.
