Christmas is over. The gifts have been opened; all the turkey has been eaten; decorations packed away; the excitement of the parties and friendly gatherings is over. January can sometimes be a let-down. The winter blues can set in. Get
involved at New Horizons by continuing activities you enjoy or trying new ones. You’ll have fun, keep active
and enjoy friends old and new.
The Christmas Dinner and Dance was great. Kudos to Bev and Jim and the Social Committee for a job well
done.
I had a wonderful Christmas with all my kids and grandkids and got what I really wanted; for all of us to be together for laughter, love, food, fun and fire-works. Yes, I said fireworks, the kind that shoots up
into the sky. We had a display that would rival any.
This is the time of year that many of our members head to warmer places. Some have already left and
others will leave in the near future.
I love going to new places. I have been to many
places....
But I have never been in Cahoots! Apparently you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with some-
one.
I have also never been Incognito. I hear no one recog-
nizes you there anyway.
I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to driven there slowly. I have made
several trips there, thanks to my family.
I would love to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity any-
more.
I have been in Doubt a few times. That is a sad place
to go and I try not to go there too often.
I have been in Flexible, but only when it was very im-
portant to stand firm.
Sometimes I find myself in Capable, and I seem to go
there more often as I get older.
But one of my favourite places to go is in Suspense! It really gets my adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old
heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!
Welcome back, Jonie, We missed you.
REMEMBER: GENERAL MEETING: JANUARY 9TH, at 2
PM.
I wish you all a healthy and happy 2012.
Message From Our President
Jackie Poloski
Are You 55+ and New To The
Gimli Area??
Perhaps recently retired or just
plain tired of sitting around the
house with too little to do??
If you’ve ever considered joining a 55+ Centre
we would like to invite you to stop by the Of-
fice at Gimli New Horizons 55+ Activity Centre
and pick up a “Thinking of Joining Brochure”.
Our Friendly staff would be delighted to an-
swer any questions you may have about join-
ing a 55+ Centre. There are plenty of things to
do here whether you’re a card player or a floor
curler, or anything in between. We have activi-
ties to suit many tastes. What a great way to
start off the new year!

BRIDGE NEWS Sharon Peichl
New Horizons’ 3 Bridge programs welcome back our regulars and also encourage new players to join in or learn our game.
Contract Bridge on Friday afternoons is played by all levels of skill or no skill!!! If you haven't played for many years no problem. Just drop in before 1pm to get set up at a friendly table. No partner needed as we switch af-ter each round so we get to play with a fine variety of members.
Beginners Bridge on Friday mornings at 10:30 is the place to start or restart your Bridge game. Call Sharon at 642-4492 for more info. Now is an excellent time to join in as there is only one beginner. A couple more would be perfect!!
Duplicate Bridge on Wednesday evenings (start at
6:45pm sharp!) is for experienced players but not par-
ticularly skilled!! Come on and try this method of play.
The same rules apply, just a different (better??) way of
dealing the cards so we all play the same hands, and
we keep the same partner for the evening. Need a part-
ner?? Call Sharon 642-4492 or Peter 642-8225 and we
will set you up.

Are you living alone or with an ill spouse and would like the comfort of knowing that help is only a press of a button away? If so then Life-line is just the right thing for you. Lifeline is
monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Responder’s phone numbers are programmed in the Lifeline unit and when help is needed, you just press the button you wear and someone from the monitoring centre will call your re-
sponder to come and help or the ambulance can also be dispatched if needed. For a reasonable
one time installation fee and low monthly moni-toring fee, Lifeline will give you and your family piece of mind. If you’re interested in the Life-

The Tai Chi classes have been fun, as the beginning
class is now working with the continuing class. The
more experienced members have been helpful and
patient, as they guide the beginners. Several partici-
pants in the Tai Chi class have mentioned health
benefits, such as lowered blood pressure and blood
sugar levels. Tai Chi is a proven way to gain flexibil-
ity and fitness through enjoyable exercises.

Directions
1. Preheat an oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
2. Place the peas and carrots, green beans, and cel-ery into a saucepan; cover with water, bring to a boil, and simmer over medium-low heat until the celery is tender, about 8 minutes. Drain the vege-tables in a colander set in the sink, and set aside.
3. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, and cook the onion until translucent, about 5 min-utes. Stir in 2/3 cup of flour, salt, black pepper, celery seed, onion powder, and Italian seasoning; slowly whisk in the chicken broth and milk until the mixture comes to a simmer and thickens. Re-move from heat; stir the cooked vegetables and turkey meat into the filling until well combined.
4. Fit 2 pie crusts into the bottom of 2 9-inch pie dishes. Spoon half the filling into each pie crust, then top each pie with another crust. Pinch and roll the top and bottom crusts together at the edge of each pie to seal, and cut several small slits into the top of the pies with a sharp knife to re-lease steam.
5. Bake in the preheated oven until the crusts are golden brown and the filling is bubbly, 30 to 35 minutes. If the crusts are browning too quickly, cover the pies with aluminum foil after about 15 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Ingredients 2 cups frozen peas and carrots
2 cups frozen green beans
1 cup sliced celery
2/3 cup butter
2/3 cup chopped onion
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 3/4 cups chicken broth
1 1/3 cups milk
4 cups cubed cooked turkey meat - light and dark meat mixed
4 (9 inch) unbaked pie crusts

The Three Samurai There once was a powerful old Japanese emperor
who needed a new chief samurai. So he sent out a
declaration throughout the entire known world
that he was searching for a chief. A year passed,
and only three people applied for the very de-
manding position: a Japanese samurai, a Chinese
samurai, and a Jewish samurai. The old emperor
asked the Japanese samurai to come in and dem-
onstrate why he should be the chief samurai. The
Japanese samurai opened a matchbox, and out
popped a bumblebee. Whoosh! went his sword.
The bumble bee dropped dead at the Emperor's
feet, neatly chopped in half. The emperor ex-
claimed, "That is very impressive!" The old em-
peror then issued the same challenge to the Chi-
nese samurai, to come in and demonstrate why he
should be chosen. The Chinese samurai also
opened a matchbox and out buzzed a fly. Whoosh,
whoosh, whoosh, whoosh! The fly dropped dead at
the Emperor's feet, neatly chopped into four small
pieces. The old emperor exclaimed, "That is very
impressive!" Now the old emperor turned to the
Jewish samurai, and asked him to demonstrate why
he should be the chief samurai. The Jewish Samu-
rai opened a matchbox, and out flew a gnat. His
flashing sword went Whoosh! But the gnat was still
alive and flying around. The emperor, obviously
disappointed, said, "Very ambitious, but why is
that gnat not dead?" The Jewish Samurai just
smiled and said, "Circumcision is not meant to kill."
THE PROPOSAL
There were these two elderly people living in a
Florida mobile home park. He was a widower and
she a widow. They had known one another for a
number of years.
Now, one evening there was a community supper
in the big activity center. These two were at the
same table, across from one another. As the meal
went on, he made a few admiring glances at her
and finally gathered up his courage to ask her,
“Will you marry me?” After about six seconds of
careful consideration, she answered. “Yes. Yes, I
will.”
The meal ended and with a few more pleasant
exchanges, they went to their respective places.
Next morning, he was troubled. “Did she say yes or
did she say no?” He couldn’t remember. Try as he
would, he just could not recall. No even a faint
memory. With trepidation, he went to the tele-
phone and called her. First, he explained to her
that he didn’t remember as well as he used to.
Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he
gained a little more courage, he then inquired of
her, “When I asked if you would marry me, did you
say Yes or did you say No?”
He was delighted to hear her say, “Why, I said,
Yes, yes I will and I meant it with all my heart.”
Then she continued, “And I am so glad that you
called, because I couldn’t remember who had
asked me.”
Three old ladies were sitting side by side in
their retirement home, reminiscing.
The first lady recalled shopping at the green
grocers, and demonstrated with her hands
the length and thickness of a cucumber she
could buy for a penny.
The second old lady nodded, adding that
onions used to be much bigger and cheaper
also, then demonstrated the size of two big
onions she could buy for a penny a piece.
Then the third old lady chipped in with: "I
can't hear a word you're saying, but I re-
member the guy you're talking about."
What a Deal...
Walking up to a department store's fabric
counter, a pretty girl asked,
"I want to buy this material for a new dress. How
much does it cost?"
"Only one kiss per yard," replied the smirking
male clerk.
"That's fine," replied the girl. "I'll take ten yards."
With expectation and anticipation written all over
his face, the clerk hurriedly measured out and
wrapped the cloth, then held it out teasingly. The
girl snapped up the package and pointed to a
little old man standing beside her.
"Grandpa will pay the bill," she smiled.

Another year has just past and we are now into a brand new one. I hope everyone had a happy, healthy and safe Christmas and are looking forward to the New Year. Now we can think about getting back into a routine and look for-ward to the various activities and events that the New Hori-zons 55+ Centre has to offer. 2012 should be another very successful year for the Gimli New Horizons. There has been growth in the membership with returning members and new members. We are cur-rently at 443 Members right now, with 69 of them being new to the Centre this year. I hope that we can keep this momentum up. Once again a reminder that membership fees for 2012 were due on or before September 30, 2011. Your membership may be paid at the office during regular hours Monday through Friday. Thank you once again to everyone who helps make the Centre so efficient. We are sorry to be losing Pat but wel-come Jonie back to the office. The office staff is always very helpful in answering questions and concerns by you – the members. Call me or any member of the Board if we can be of assis-tance to you. We may be reached through the Centre at 642-7909. Happy New Year Everyone !!!

SOCIAL COMMITTEE Bev & Jim Richardson
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Our Christmas Din-
ner and Dance was excellent. We all thoroughly enjoyed the
meal served by our Caterer Mandi Bergman of Mad Dash
Catering. We had the full Christmas Meal of turkey, dress-
ing, potatoes, gravy, coleslaw, meatballs, perogies, buns,
pickles, cranberry sauce with dainties for dessert. Thanks
Mandi.
'The Crazy 8's+' lead us through some traditional Christmas
Carols to get us in the Christmas spirit. Our Thanks to them,
they were great and we were privileged to attend their final
performance. We then sat back and enjoyed listening and
dancing to the tunes and tones of the 4'D's. It was perfect.
The Hall was decorated with full table settings, using our
round tables and white linen cloths and red linen napkins. It
doesn't get much better folks. We had 121 members and
guests and could have easily accommodated more. Please
keep your Centre in mind for next year.
We'll report on our New Year's Eve Dinner Dance in Febru-
ary.
The Cost The Social Committee want all members to be assured that
they try their hardest to always keep the costs of the Social
Events run at our Centre at the lowest possible amount. We
plan ahead and have to book space, bands, caterers all well
in advance. We search out the best value for our dollar. We
also require money to help with special themes, decorations
and door prizes. Remember outside caterers and bands cost
more, doing the catering and internal entertainment costs
less but then the volunteers don't get a break. We do a bal-
ance of both throughout the year.
We calculate all this as carefully as possible and then, based
on past attendance at our events, we set a price that will, we
hope, cover the costs without drawing on the General Centre
Funds. Our problem is, and likely always will be, that we do
not know nor can we predict exactly how many tickets will
be sold.
The one thing we can guarantee is that we are always DO-
ING OUR BEST for you.
Our thanks go to:
the members who support our efforts
the members who pitch in and help when and
where we most need it
and to our fellow members of the Social Commit-
tee: Lil & Gord Page, Laurie Stirton & Nick Steele,
Anni Hahlweg and Sylvia Bydak.
OUR OLD GARDEN
My eyes are closed but I can see The glistening dew on our oak tree.
The flowering buds, soon acorn bound A million crocus hide the ground.
And just beyond, down by the pool
My Granny sits on three legged stool Picking fruit to make preserves
That brings the praise that she deserves.
My Mum and Dad for pictures pose The background filled with English rose
And hand in hand they slip away To kiss, to love, to seize the day.
My sister skips along the path
White shoes, pink dress, a tinkling laugh So sweet, the apple of my eye And pretty as the evening sky.
My Aunts and Uncles all are here
Beside the oak, they share good cheer And all of them bring love and care For me and mine, and all to share.
My eyes are closed but I can see
The things that fostered love in me So long ago and yet so clear
My wealth of love from yesteryear.
We have a wealth of talent in our membership. The

The Gimli New Horizons "ECHOE'S" choir gave a spir-ited concert performance at the Betel Seniors home on Dec 1st.
Although few in number, the soprano voices blended together beautifully, backed by our solid baritone and presented a diverse program of popular ballads fol-lowed by a selection of carols.
The choir was enhanced by its own string section ( vio-lin ), and the evening was enjoyed by all.
All members agreed to recess for the holidays and will resume practices again on Monday January 9th, at 10:30 a.m. (The Centre is Closed on Jan 02).

This group of dedicated readers meets the third Wednes-day of each month at 1:30pm to share our book experi-ences. There are many closet readers who have not partici-pated in our group, so come on down and share your fa-vourites!! A fantastic read is ― UNBROKEN‖ by Laura Hillenbrand. This is the true story of Louis Zamperini who was an olym-pic runner in 1936, a WW2 vet who spent 47 days on a raft in the Pacific and 2 years as a POW. His survival story is mesmerizing!! Don't miss it. Also on the go around the Cen-tre is ―12 Drummers Drumming‖ a story of murder in a small village. You don't have to attend a meeting every month to help out
with good choices for us to share. Call Sharon at 642-4492
or Gerry at 642-8530 to pass on good tips.

FABRIC ARTS
Lynn Clark
The Fabric Arts Activity Group meets in the Coffee Spot from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every Tuesday. We welcome anyone
and everyone who shares our fibre arts hobbies. We enjoy
working in the spacious, well-lit room with conversation, shar-
ing ideas, coffee (and we usually bring our lunch). Drop in
every Tuesday, or once in a while. Some members bring their
own work, and others create quilts and other items from our
donated materials. We will be taking a break for the Christ-
mas Holidays but will return shortly into the New Year. Sea-
son’s Greetings to All and Have a Happy New Year.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was
blaming you.
I surveyed 100 women and asked them what
shampoo they used when showering. 98 of
them said, "How did you get in here?"

PEROGY REPORT
Mavis Gerwing & Pauline Finlay
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! Another year is over
and we are starting 2012 already!
We would like to thank all our workers who have made the
first half of the year so successful; prep workers on Tues-
days, rollers, pinchers, boilers, coolers, packers & shippers
on Wednesday. A special thank you to all our new volun-
teers who fitted in so very well. We hope you continue to
come out each month.
We had a very successful day on December 7th making
almost 400 dozen! All our orders were filled and any extra
was sold at Bingo that evening!
Our hardworking perogy crew is taking a well deserved rest
in January. We will be starting up again Wednesday
February 1, 2012. The order list is posted on the bulletin
board so please get your order in early to avoid disappoint-
ment and so we know how much supplies will be needed.
To all our dedicated workers, please mark February 1st on
your calendars and we'll see you then. Anyone who would
like to try perogy making please stop in. We can always
find you a job and we have lots of willing teachers if you
are a novice. We do work hard, but we also have fun!
Enjoy your January break everyone!

BINGO Edna Lavigne
Well—where did 2011 go?
We had a very successful year and a lot of fun.
Anywhere from 6 to 10 regulars attended most of
the year, but when November/December arrives
we dwindle down a bit. Snowbirds leave and
other members have Christmas concerts and
choir practice to attend—as well, ailments cut us
down some.
None of this stops us though and we’re jamming
every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. If
you play an instrument, bring it along and join us
or visit to see what we do and the fun we have,
then decide.
We are looking forward to a great 2012.

Many thanks go out to all the volunteers that stead-
fastly deliver the Hilites Newsletters out into the
community. These people show up in rain or shine
and take bunches of the newsletters to various busi-
nesses in and around Gimli.
