The Utes then host Nevada (0-2) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Ute Field in their home opener. Underclassmen Impact... Head coach Rich Manning and his staff showed confidence in their youthful squad Friday at Cal State Fullerton as seven of the 11 starters were freshmen and sophomores, while four more underclassmen came on as substutes. Among the five freshmen who saw acon, defender Avery Ford and forward Kae Taylor cracked the starng lineup. Ashton Hall, Jill Robison and Sarah Duncan all appeared as substutes, with Robision leading the Utes with a pair of shots, including a double-overme strike that rung the goalpost, missing by mere inches. Utes’ Goalkeeping Goes Two-Deep... Utah used a pair of goalkeepers against Fullerton, demonstrang trust in both, and saw great dividends from it. Incumbent senior Hannah Turpen, a three-year starter and a staple of the Ute defense, gave way to sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock at halſtime. Mulcock, who made three appearances as a freshman, including two starts for an injured Turpen last year, was up to the task as she made four crucial saves, including a pair of stops on breakaway aempts from nearly point- blank range. Turpen and Mulcock are backed up by freshmen Cassity Cutrer and Molly Poleo, two budding freshmen who are training hard and preparing for their opportunity to shine as well. Twin Towers Lead Ute Defense Once Again... Senior center-backs Lauren Dudley and Lauren Porter return to anchor the Ute defense for the fourth straight year. Standing at 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-9 respecvely, they make up one of the tallest center-back duos in the Pac-12, if not the enre western region. Both provide a tremendous heading presence in the back and offer a scoring threat going forward, combining for eight goals over the last three years. Scoung this Week’s Opposion... BYU Cougars Utah’s tradional rival, BYU, enters Tuesday night’s game following a 2-2 draw at #20 Washington in its season-opener. Carlee Payne and Dana Oldroyd were the goal scorers for the Cougars. Payne came into this season as the top returning point-geer for BYU following a six-goal, seven-assist effort last year (19 points). With Oldroyd’s goal, she has already equaled her season output from 2010. Defensively, McKinzie Olson is back in goal for the Cougars. Aſter allowing only 11 goals last year and posng a 0.49 goals-against average for the season, Olson surrendered a pair of goals against Washington while also making two saves. BYU is coached by Jennifer Rockwood, now in her 17th year. Rockwood has amassed a 259- 76-27 (.753) record at the helm for the Cougars. Nevada Wolfpack Like the Utes, Nevada enters this week looking for its first goal of the 2011 season aſter suffering a 3-0 shutout at Pacific in the season-opener, followed by a 4-0 neutral-site loss to Penn State. Coming into the season, the Wolfpack’s top returning scorers were Kori Disarufino and Danielle Green, who each tallied three goals last season.
