Youve heard of the Rose Bowl, theOrange Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. A se-lect few will even recognize the GaylordHotels Music City Bowl.

But do you recall the Frozen ToiletBowl?

Others referred to the 1976 DivisionII semifinal between Montana State andNorth Dakota State as the Grantland Rice

Bowl, but not former Chronicle sportseditor Mike Yowitz, who happened to bethe first to need a bathroom break in thepress box at then 66-year-old and nowdefunct Dacotah Field in Fargo, N.D.

He rounded the corner and peeredat the stall in the poorly-insulated pressfacility, medieval enough that GrantlandRice may have actually paid it a visit, andsure enough, there was every plumbersworst nightmare: a block of ice in a tubof porcelain.

The frozen toilet bowl.Hearing the story surprised no one

brave enough to set foot on the peril-ous Astroturf that day. Former MSUlinebacker Bert Markovich surmised

that ice skates might have been the most

effective footwear for the antiquatedplaying surface.

It was like a skating rink and we werewearing tennis shoes, Markovich said.Much to his chagrin, I ended up bor-rowing (assistant coach) Cliff Hysellsshoes just because I couldnt stand up onanything else out there.

At that point in history, former MSUcornerback Ron Muri said there wasonly one available technology that made40-mile-per-hour gusts and minus-15degree temperatures bearable.

No, it wasnt rubbing two sticks to-gether to make fire.

Winning, Muri said, recalling the10-3 Bobcat victory. Theres a smallchance one of us might have frozen todeath if wed lost.

Fast forward to the era of propaneheaters, Nike and FieldTurf; Markovichand Muri arent sure if todays playersrealize how good they have it.

    Then again, coming from Africa,

Dallas and Los Angeles, all the scientific

advances of the last 34 years may nothave prepared Montana States currenttrio of leading receivers for how bad itwas about to get.

cill cs mElvis Akpla set foot on the MSU

campus in January of 2009 and then gotpneumonia. Less than a week later, hewas practicing in a blizzard.

Well, the Senegal native thought, itcant get much worse.

By and large, hes been right. But sub-zero wind-chill games like the Bobcats2009 loss to Northern Arizona and their2010 win over Montana are an unpleas-ant reminder why Akpla sports whatamounts to a full-bodied thermal suit, not unlike the preferred attire of JacquesCousteau, in the later months of theseason.

Its just like anything else, Akpla said.Youve got to come prepared.

Im pretty sure (Gilbert) was the only one sweating in thatMontana game. That was quite the accomplishment.

    BOBCAT GAME DAY

North Dakota State at Montana State

    12:05 p.m. Bobcat Stadium

    The edgeNorthDakota StateatMoNtaNa State

Kicki & puti: The Bison have one othe best punters in the FCS in John Prelvitz. His 39.37-yard net punting average is in thenations top 10 along with the 36.93 markput up by MSUs Rory Perez this season. So iPerez isnt eeling any ill eects o getting alittle banged up chasing down that saety atMontana two weeks ago, this matchup is apush.

Where Montana State gains the advantage is kicking.

Ryan Jastram may have hit a 51-yarder last week, buthes a dome kicker who has been wildly inconsistentthis year, hitting on 12 o 20 attempts. MSUs JasonCunningham, who isnt unaccustomed to driving snow,

is one o the nations best, having gone 19-or-23.

Rturs & cvr: Forget about puntreturning today. With either the roughweather or the games two great puntersmaking those balls tough to eld, you wontsee much o it today. As ar as kick returnsgo, neither team has chalked up nor given

up any big ones yet this season. So expecta pretty uneventul day on the special teams ront i it

proves true that typically-automatic MSU long snap-per Tim Garcia got his one mulligan out o the way lastgame against the Grizzlies.

    e: Montana State

    special teams

Pssi:Coming o a shoulder and collar-bone injury, NDSUs redshirt reshman quar-terback, Brock Jensen, has perhaps caughtthis MSU deense at the worst possible time. With the emergence o deensive tackle ZachMinter and the return o deensive end DustinOConnell over the past three games, theBobcat deensive line has come alive, puttingtons o pressure on opposing quarterbacks.A Bison oensive line that is huge but has had troubleswith consistency and durability this season may struggle

to contain them. And i MSU is oten getting pressurewith our-man ronts, this game might be over beore itstarts or NDSU.

That said, there is one acet o this oense that has tolook troubling to MSU. While the Bison may only have onedeep threat in Warren Halloway, they have a plethora oshort passes and screens already built into their oense, and they used them to torch a decent Robert Morrisdeense last week. Quite similarly, Montana and NorthernArizona burned the Cats so oten with those quick hittersthat both teams hardly bothered throwing deep.

But there was one big thing that both UM and NAUhad that NDSU does not an accurate senior quarter-back. To his credit, Jensen has showed what Bison coachCraig Bohl called marked improvement in the secondgame o all his back-to-back starts this year. But all othose games just happened to take place in the riendly

connes o the Fargodome. And marked improvementnever inched Jensens completion percentage above 44percent this year nor gave him more than 229 yards pass-

ing in any game. In a hostile environment andinclement weather, dont expect his numbersto get much better.

Rusi:Looking or proo that D.J. McNor-ton is the heart o the NDSU oense? Checkthe rst ve plays o their rst-ever FCS playogame last week all hand-os to McNorton. The senior running back has used his solidcombination o size and speed to pile up an

impressive 1,228 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns at aclip o 5.5 yards a carry. McNorton also hasnt had to take

the beating most eature backs endure thanks to a nicecontribution rom backup Mike Sigers, who, save TaiwanJones, is as explosive as any running back that MSU hasseen this season.

But there is one glaring red ag that appears in McNor-tons statistics. While he has been just about unstoppableon the ast track inside the Fargodome this season, hehas put up dreadul numbers on the road. Aside romone nice eort against Illinois State, the sixth-worstdeense in the nation, McNorton has been held to 188yards on 56 carries with no touchdowns in our gamesaway rom home this season. And theres also the actthat deending the run may be the biggest strength othis Bobcat deense.

NDSU will lean heavily on its running game, whichmeans MSU will be allowed to ocus its eorts there. And like Jensen, in a hostile environment and inclement

weather, dont expect McNortons road numbers to getmuch better today.e: Montana State

Pssi:This is the one area where the Bisonave to win. With an inconsistent oense anddeense that has proved susceptible to the

un at times this year, NDSUs stout deensiveront has to get pressure on Denarius McGheend its ballhawking secondary to make biglays. The trouble is, even some o the Big Skyonerences best deensive lines had a difcult

ime getting consistent pressure on McGhee thiseason and even some o the Big Skys best secondaries haddifcult time locking down all o his receiving threats.he question is: how much better are the deenses in the

Missouri Valley Conerence? The Big Sky has never been aeague predicated on deense, and the Missouri Valley hasroduced some o the nations best over the past ve years. The key to this particular Missouri Valley unit is Matthewratzek. When the 6-oot-2, 290-pound disruptive menacet deensive tackle has been healthy and orcing oensive

ines to account or him, his presence alone almost assureshe Bison will bring pressure, with even a our-manush. And double-teaming him will ree up pass-rushingpecialists Coulter Boyer and Cole Jirik at deensivend. Even or the best o quarterbacks, throwing into aecondary that has picked o 14 passes this year underhose types o conditions could be treacherous. Then again, even with its stingy Tampa Two scheme,

NDSU has been bitten by some good quarterbacks thisear. That list includes Walter Payton candidate Mattarr o Western Illinois, whose numbers are similar to

McGhees, in a 28-16 NDSU loss and Indiana States Ronnieouch, a Washington transer who threw or 330 yards inhe Fargodome and may have also beaten the Bison i his

team had any semblance o a running game.McGhee has a running game and the bestreceiving corps the Bison have seen all year.

That could spell trouble or the visitors. Rusi: Attacking the heart o the Montanadeense with the I-ormation and power runsup the gut proved eective or MSU two weeksago. That wont be the case again today. Themiddle o the NDSU deense is beeer and may

be the strength o the entire unit. Luckily or the Bobcats, they have the ability to run outside as well. And playingin a predominantly two-back oensive league, the Bison

might not be well-accustomed to sneaky backs likeOrenzo Davis, who can nd seams even without a leadblocker in ront o him.

And make no mistake, Davis, who has racked up 517yards with our touchdowns in his past our games, isplaying his best ootball o the season right now. Expectthe Bobcats to attack the NDSU the same way theyattacked teams like Sacramento State and NorthernColorado, using stretch, misdirection and quick passplays along with a heavy mix o C.J. Palmer and Davis. That allowed the pair to rack up 525 total yards and vetouchdowns against a pair o deenses that were alsostocked with bigger, physical deenders.

There is a chance that the Bison have enough depthat linebacker to combat such a scheme. But with MattAnderson and Chad Willson both coming back rominjuries this week, they may not have the endurance to

keep up with MSUs erce rushing and passing attacksor our quarters. e: Montana State

into a selloutcrowd com-ing o anemotionalwin againstRobert Morristhat was abattle into

the ourth quarter. MSUwill trot out a veterandeense and a conidentoense at home coming

o a bye week. Havinga single week o at thispoint in the season willnot have made MSUrusty. Itll have helpedwith late-season healingand preparation.

overall There is no question that there are elements othis NDSU team highlighted by its deense andshort passing game that could give MSU trouble. But with a clearly inerior oense and a deenseplaying out o its element against a spread oense, the likes o which it has rarely seen this season, it willbe extremely difcult or North Dakota State to go

punch-or-punch with MSU in Bozeman today. Thisgame shouldnt be close, and it could get ugly.
