Maintainability is the relative ease and economy of
time and resources with which an item can be retained
in, or restored to, a specified condition.
The Game of Maintainability has the target to train
the maintainability principles and the definition of
maintainability programs.
Directed to:
Students of
Technical
Schools
Engineers &
Technicians of
Maintenance
Designers of
machines
Use learning methods:
• Problem-based learning.
• Cooperative learning.
• Used in Technical Schools.
Based in the handbooks:
• DOD-HDBK-791 Military Handbook
Maintainability Design Techniques – Metric.
• MIL-HDBK-470A Department of Defense
Handbook Designing and Developing
Maintainable Products and Systems
Volume I.
Requirements:
• 1 official copy of the game.
• 2 facilitators.
• From 12 to 36 players in 12 teams.
• Stopwatch, memo pads, graph papers, clip-
charts, makers, post-its, paper,…
Game Box:
• Game rules.
• 12 machines (to repair).
• 1 poster-guide.
• 12 cards penalty factors.
• 12 cards bonus factors.
• 4 Maintainability program generators.
GAME BOX
Facilitators:
• Strong knowledge of DOD-HDBK-791
and MIL-HDBK-470A.
• Lead the game.
• Help the players to obtain the goals.
1st Step:
• Repair a machine with penalty
factors.
• Measure the time to repair.
• Draw the maintainability functions
and calculate maintainability rates.
2nd Step:
• Define a maintainability program to remove
the penalty factors (with the maintainability
program generators).
• Redraw the maintainability functions and
recalculate maintainability rates.
• Compare and discuss results.
3rd Step:
• Define a maintainability program to include
features to facilitate maintainability (with the
maintainability program generators).
• Redraw the maintainability functions and
recalculate maintainability rates.
• Compare and discuss results.
Main Tool: Maintainability Program Generator.
