Mission Matters

This is a photo of St. Francis Basilica in Assisi, Italy. While on pilgrimage we celebrated Eucharist at the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi, found here. This was one of the many holy places that I carried your prayers, offered them at the altar and lit a vigil candle as I left. I will be sharing many more photos and stories about this pilgrimage. The experience was amazing and life-changing.

April is Financial Literacy MonthHow prepared are you

for your future? According to The Financial

Awareness Foundation, young people, middle aged and older

people know they need 'financial knowledge' but

aren't sure what it is. This is part of the reason why many

people are on the verge of running out of money before their life expectancy. People

often remark that they want to “do something for charity but

are concerned about their personal needs.” More than

half the adults in the US (approximately 120 million Americans) don’t have nor

understand why they need an up-to-date financial, estate and gift plan to protect themselves

and their families. Spring is a great time to

evaluate financial plans as personal tax season closes

and people sometimes adjust finances for the rest of 2019.

It is also a time to review estate plans.

Renee Thompson, Develop-ment Officer, worked closely with two grateful friends of

Felician Village who not only prepared for their future, but included Felician Village in

their giving plans. Renee offered opportunities that will result in an impact for

our residents. If you feel inspired to discuss

a meaningful gift option, please contact her at

[email protected].

Griffin Companions VisitThe Griffin Companions made a visit the end of March. In celebration of St. Patty’s day everyone made a rainbow with a pot of gold and were also given the task of untan-gling a gold coin that was knotted around a leprechaun, but the trick was they couldn’t untie the string…until next time, we will see if anyone was able to figure it out!

EASTER CRAFT

President’s ColumnAfter this long, snowy winter, spring has finally sprung and Easter is right around the corner. Our administrative team is busy working on our 2019-20 budget for the new budget year which starts July 1. As you all know from balancing your own household budget, it certainly can be a challenge to include our many needs into a budget especially when there is always new and exciting technology available to make our lives more efficient, easier and healthier.Back in 1952, the Sisters had to make the decision of spending approximately $100,000 to renovate the 1888 building to make it safer for the residents but still not fireproof, or spend a considerably larger sum of money to build a modern, fireproof home. The decision was made to build a new home with groundbreaking occurring on July 30, 1953, and the cornerstone laid on November 15, 1953. The new home would have room for 100 residents in addition to an infirmary, auditorium, parlors, sunporches, library, dining room, kitchen, bakery and laundry. Hamann Construction Company of Manitowoc was chosen as the contractor. The total cost of the structure was $900,000, a large sum of money in that era. Donations for the new building came from the local area as well as from donors in Chicago. Forty-three elderly women and 13 men moved into the new building in November of 1954 which was staffed with 19 Felician Sisters, 2 lay men, and a chaplain. As we celebrate the breaking of winter’s grasp with spring and the resurrection of Jesus this Easter, let us remember those who work to carry on the tradition of the Felician Sisters and the Felician core values. May you have a joyous Easter season and may the Blessings of Easter be with you always.Peace and All Good,

Frank Soltys, President/CEO
