NINTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 25, 2016
8:30 & 10:00 a.m.
Bible Verse of the Month: "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing;
it is a gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8 (NRSV)
Gathering PRELUDE Sonata in C Major, K525 W. A. Mozart Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship.
WELCOME
You are invited to stand.
CONFESSION/FORGIVENESS
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy
endures forever.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom
no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your
Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy
name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
You may kneel as you are able or remain standing. Silence is kept for reflection.
Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and
given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent.
In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have
done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you by your Spirit, so
that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our
Savior and Lord. Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us
alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus
Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through
the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.
You are invited to stand.
GATHERING HYMN Canticle of the Turning Hymn #723
GREETING
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the
Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
Mozart’s sonata in C
Major, K545, was written
late in his career, at a time
when he was beginning to
experience significant
difficulties with his health
and finances. While it
eventually became the
most popular of his piano
sonatas, it was not
published during his life-
time. In his own catalogue
of his works, Mozart
described it as being a
sonata “for beginners.”

HYMN OF PRAISE
Today we will sing a setting
of the Glory to God, which
was composed as part of the
new “Bethany Festival
Liturgy.” In the American
Lutheran Tradition, the
“Glory to God” text is
typically sung on ordinary
Sundays for the Hymn of
Praise, while “This is the
Feast” is usually reserved
for festival Sundays. If you
are not comfortable trying
to sing this new piece for
the first time, feel free to
just listen to the music until
you become familiar with
the melody.

Hearing Assistance Please see the Sound
Tech in the sound booth at the rear of the Sanc-
tuary if you need a hearing assistant

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
SECOND LESSON 1 Timothy 6:6-19 Holy Bible pg. 226 (NT)

You are invited to stand.

GOSPEL Luke 16:19-31 Holy Bible pg. 81-82 (NT)
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

The prophet Amos
announces that Israel’s
great wealth is a cause not
for rejoicing but rather
sorrow, because God’s
people have forgotten how
to share their wealth with
the poor. The wealthy will
be the first to go into exile
when judgment comes.
Timothy is reminded of the
confession he made at his
baptism and of its implica-
tions for daily life. His
priorities will be different
from those of people who
merely want to be rich.
Jesus tells a parable in
which the poor one is
“lifted up” and the rich
one is “sent away empty.”
Jesus makes it clear that
this ethic of merciful
reversal is not new but is
as old as Moses and the
prophets.

SERMON You are invited to stand.
HYMN OF THE DAY There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy Hymn #588
(vs. 1, 2)
APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always.
And also with you.
After sharing the Peace, please be seated.

GREAT THANKSGIVING
PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy... ...we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
SANCTUS
WORDS OF INSTITUTION ...For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the
mystery of our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
The Preface is a prayer
which reminds us that, in
Christ, we are united
with all the Saints who
have gone before us. We
are a part of the Com-
munion of Saints through
all time and space.

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
