Cindy has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from UF. She has done graduate work at the University of West Florida.
She is the Parliamentarian for NABJ.
Works as a health reporter for the Houston Chronicle.
Questions and AnswersQ: How important is it to get a specialization? What advice do you have for people
who can do a little bit of everything but don’t know what field they want to go into. A: I wanted to be a political reporter at first. Now i’m a health reporter. As a journalist, you’re going to have all types of assignments. You have to build your expertise. Your skill set is valuable even though you don’t have a specialization in mind yet. You might find that along the way.
Q: When we go to the convention, should we market ourselves as an editor or should I tell them I can do a little bit of everything?A: Do not wear your pajamas in the car. Your convention starts when you leave for the convention. Do not forget that you are in an interview for five or six days. Television production is probably the most sought after skill set in the industry. Those are the people who end up being news directors, so you need to be confident in your skill set.
Q: How has being a member of NABJ helped you with your career? A: I can’t tell you how amazing this organization is. NABJ is the only place you can go as a journalist of color where you can find people who will want to mentor you, hire you and help you in this industry. It’s the only place you can go and have access to people in every aspect of the industry. A lot of people don’t have that support. I’ve been to every NABJ Convention since I was 17.

OpportunitiesThe Office of Admissions at UF is seeking multimedia student journalists for a series of training videos for the Alumni Ambassador program. Students should have some background in working with digital video equipment, video editing software and writing for multiple platforms. Students should also be available throughout the summer semester to work with admissions staff. This internship may be available for college credit.
