    Remember the tremendous success of last year's Community Day? This year will be even better as we expand theevent from one day to the full week. Grab your family, friends and colleagues and show your support for education

    excellence. Great Schools Week spans FIVE DAYS, February 14 - 18!

    A portion of sales from over 50 local businesses will be donated to benefit OUR 18,000 students! "Golden

    Tickets"(list of participating merchants) went home in last Thursday folders. Additional information is

    Great Schools Week is sponsored by the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (CEEF), a community

    partner for excellence in local education.

    Valentines Day Celebrations

    Thank you to the parents who made Garden Gate Valentines Day celebrations a success! Our children enjoyed

    exchanging Valentines and participating in games and activities, and sharing tasty treats.

    STAR Writing Test

    Fourth grade students will take the STAR Writing Test on March 1, 2011.

    The STAR Writing Test addresses writing application standards for fourth grade. These standards require students

    produce one of four types of writing: narrative, summary, information report, or response to literature. Fourth grad

    students will read a task and write a first draft of their essay. First drafts are submitted to the state for scoring.

    The two-week multiple choice STAR Test window, for grades two through five, begins April 25, 2011. Please

    refrain from scheduling appointments for your child during the school day between April 25 and May 6.

    Additionally, please be sure children get a full nights sleep, eat breakfast, and have snacks. Concentration is diffic

    when children are tired or hungry.

    T.B. Test For VolunteersThis is just a reminder that all adults that volunteer in theclassroom need to have a TB test on file in the school office.If you have one on file at another school in our district, or inthe district office, we still need one on file at Garden Gate.Please be mindful of our policy when volunteering in theclassroom.

    Updating Residency InformationPlease be aware that district guidelines require that anychange of residence must be reported to the school officewithin ten (10) days. This guideline is in place to ensure thatthe address and contact information that the school has onfile is accurate. This information is crucial and is used tosend official school/district correspondence and it is used inthe case of an emergency. Failure to provide currentresidency information could result in the immediatewithdrawal of your child. If you have any questions regarding

    this guideline, please contact the school office..

    Safety Tips. . .Never leave your vehicle in theparking lot unattended. Use corners and crosswalksto get to school. Crossingbetween parked cars is verydangerous. Always come to a completestop at stop signs and makesure the intersection is clearbefore proceeding. Yield the right of way tochildren and all pedestrians. Do not block neighborsdriveways. Please be respectful to ourtraffic volunteers. They are outthere to keep our children safe!

    Parents And Visitors On CampusOnce school begins and is in session, parents are notpermitted to interrupt the classroom. The teachers areinvolved with classroom instruction and interruptions are verydistracting. If it becomes necessary for you to speak to yourchild or your childs teacher during the school day, pleasenotify the school office. All visitors on campus or volunteersentering the classroom must first sign in at the office andobtain a visitors badge when school is in session.

    Lunch AccountsIt is very important that students who eat hot lunch have apositive balance in their lunch account. Parents can prep

    for as many lunches as possible so that students do not rout of money. Students are only given one lunch on credIf a student has used the credit, CUSD policy is that thecafeteria will provide a drink and the cold items, but not aentre. All lunch money must be placed in a blue enveloand checks should be made out to CUSD NutritionalServices. Envelopes are available in the school office, ancan be returned to your childs teacher or to the office. Tocheck your students lunch account balance, log on to:www.paypams.com or call 1-888-994-5100. You can alsocontact Mrs. Chen at 408-252-5414 ext. 132 for accountbalance information.

    Reporting AbsencesWhen a student is staying home from school withan illness, please remember that a parent must callinto the school office every day that the student isabsent from school. The 24-hour absencereporting line is (408) 252-5414 ext. 6. Please rememto spell both first and last name and give the roomnumber. When calling in your childs absence please

    include their symptoms: Nausea or vomiting (must remain at home untifree of symptoms for 24 hours).

    Diarrhea (must remain at home until freesymptoms for 24 hours).

    Severe headache. Continuous coughing or runny nose. Evidence of a communicable disease such a

    rash, swelling or unusual sore throat. A temperature of 100.4 F (38 C) degrees or hi

    (must remain at home until he/she has a no98.6 F (37 C) degree temperature for 24 howithout the use of a fever reducer suchTylenol).

    Conjunctivitis - pink eye. Undiagnosed rash (rashes must be verifiedyour doctor that they are non-contagious bethe child may return to school; a note is need

    2011 SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATEThe Cupertino Union School District continues to face major budget cuts from the state. As a result, there will be no available fo implement the Districts summer school program. As a result, there will be no regular education, CLIP, or ELD summer schis year.

    Special Education Extended School Year is not affected and will be available for students currently identified and enrollCupertino Union School District Special Day Classes (SDC) whose IEP includes summer school. Registration forms wvailable from the SDC teachers beginning April 2011.

    PARENT PHOTOS AND VIDEO GUIDELINESThe Cupertino Union School District currently allows parents to capture audio recordings, images, and/or video footage ofhildren in the classroom and at school events. The district believes that allowing this access is an important part of invoarents in the education of their children. While the district understands the desire for parents to share this information with ot

    we request that all parents be respectful of the privacy of other families and the districts policies for protecting student identity

    Therefore, any audio recordings, images, and/or video footage of students obtained during school hours or at any other scelated activity should be used only for your private viewing and not be posted or published online. This guideline is consistenhe school districts policies and we would appreciate your cooperation.

    As new technology continues to emerge, the district is balancing the use of innovative technology at the school site witrotection of the identity of our students.
