From Our PrincipalAs many of you know, two of the school goals we have focused upon for a number of years have been building readingomprehension and helping our students develop into proficient writers. The following is an article from Parents Make the

Difference that we printed several years ago. Its message is as valuable today as it was then so we are printing it again. Thearticle suggests ideas for you and your child to do at home to help support our efforts in our reading and writing goals. Ivealso included a couple of fun family activities that you might want to do during the upcoming winter break. Both are fromamilyeducation.com.

Build Reading Comprehension, Writing Skills With SummariesWriting helps students become better readers. Research shows that being able to write well will enable your child to do better n other subjects, toosocial studies, science, math. Theres also evidence that if your child writes frequently, hell do better

on all kinds of testsnot just essay tests. A great way to boost your childs writing skills and his reading comprehension is tohave him write summaries of what hes read. This could be a chapter in a textbook or library book, a short story or just a fewparagraphs. Start this one night after your child has finished his homework. First praise him for completing his readingassignment. Tell him youd like to find out what hes learnedwhat hes read about. Ask him to write down the most importantpoints. Say you want to read it in his own words.Your child might go back to read the material again. When he knows he haso write about it, hell read more carefully. Hell think more as he reads. After your child writes his summary, give him this set of

questions to help him write more complete summaries in the future:* Who are the characters or people i nvolved? Suggest that he write a bout each person and whats important about each one.* What did the characters do? Your child should write down the plot in his own words.* Where did it happen? Have your child describe the setting in some detail.* When did the events take place? Your child should give the time span of the action.* Why did things occur as they did? Have him explain why the characters behaved the way they did.

Once your child gets the hang of writing summaries after he reads school material, he will soon see the benefits. Not only willhe have a much better understanding of what he reads, he will improve his writing skills and test scores as well.

    Hello Gator Families,

Last week the author and illustrator, Kathryn Otoshi, visited Garden Gate. She conductedtwo assemblies and one workshop for the children and one assembly for the parents. These sessions wereinformative, educational and emotional and a very powerful experience as the parents who attended can testify. Iencourage all the parents to participate in such future events they provide an invaluable opportunity to learnmore and enrich your knowledge. Thank you to all the parents who participated! In addition, we have a drawing once a month to give away $10 worth of scrip! This week well be open every afternoon as well as Wednesday and Friday mornings!

SurveyThe PTA survey is still ongoing. We would love to get feedback from everyone please keep on sending your suggestions. This is your chance to participate in the discussion and help us decide on what we will do with theadditional money we have this year. There are extra survey forms in the office.

Crossing GuardWe are concerned about the heavy traffic in the mornings and on Tuesdays afternoons. Crossing the road during

these times is hard and dangerous for the children. We would like to ask the city to send an official CrossingGuard to help us. Please help us to achieve that by filling out a Public Safety Commission Hazard Report. These reports are available in the office and on the PTA website. Your support is appreciated!

Sincerely,Merav Talmor Garden Gate PTA President
