What’s your comfort level when driving on roundabouts? These bagel-shaped junctions are starting to “make their rounds” towards the Geist and Fishers area. A new one just opened at the corner of 96th and Fall Creek and another one is going in at 106th and Lantern Road. Also, there is a possibility of a future one to be installed at the intersection of 96th and Cumberland in 2014.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were driving on the roundabout at Keystone and 116th. We entered the right lane of the circle seeing that there was a gap. We were getting ready to take the first exit to the right, when suddenly in the left lane a flying car came out of nowhere, traveling very fast and cut over in front of us as he took the same exit. We nearly collided with this young boy who never realized how much he shook us up. After spending the rest of the evening analyzing the proper way to drive on roundabouts, I became motivated to research them and would like to share this information with you.

“Carmel is the Roundabout Capital of America,” says Nancy Heck, Director of Community Relations in Carmel. “There are about 60 roundabouts here, more than in any other U.S. city.”

Although driving on roundabouts can make many people uneasy and anxious, they are actually intended to keep us safer than stop signs and stop lights at intersections. According to the City of Carmel, the number of injury accidents has been reduced by about 80 percent and the number of accidents overall, by about 40 percent in roundabout intersections.

Besides safety, here are some other benefits of roundabouts: environmentally friendly because there is less idling of motors, less gas burning into atmosphere, and better fuel economy; aesthetically pleasing to view with landscaping; easier for pedestrians and bicyclists to navigate; less cost to build than a signaled intersection by about $125,000 (Carmel.in.gov.).

Four Main Tips for Driving a Roundabout1 Look to your left and yield to drivers already in the circle.

They have the right-of-way.2 Stay in your same lane as you enter and exit.

Incidentally, some roundabouts may have a mixture of single and multi-lanes such as the roundabout on 96th and Fall Creek which will eventually have a combination. For instance, there will be two lanes entering the circle heading northbound on Fall Creek while the other two entry points of

the intersection will be a single lane.

Although the steps for driving on roundabouts are generally standard, please be aware that they may vary due to the specific roundabout at hand with its own set of signs and pavement markings.

“Oftentimes with roundabouts, there is a learning curve,” says Joel Thurman, Project Manager of Hamilton County Highway Department. “When we convert standard intersections into roundabouts, even if people are familiar with the intersections, once the roundabout is installed, there is a still a period of time needed to process learning the new set of rules.”

There’s a reason why one of the most recognized symbols for autism is a

ribbon made of puzzle pieces. Autism is perhaps

one of the most mystifying disorders that a family can deal with. Why? Because no one really knows what causes it, and there is no way to stop or reverse it.

The term autism is used to generally describe a group of complex developmental brain disorders knows as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD). It is estimated that one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than childhood cancer,

juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. And according to government statistics, diagnosed cases of autism are increasing every year by 10 to17 percent, with the vast majority of those cases being idiopathic, which means the cause is unknown.

“One of the hardest parts for families is the identification process,” says Ann Marie Noll, MS, Director of Outpatient Therapy Services for TOTS, Fishers (totsindy.com). “Our therapists are often in the position to see those first signals that a diagnosis might be in order, but parents aren’t always ready to hear that.”

Noll says that since autism is a spectrum disorder, every child shows different characteristics, which makes it that much more difficult for parents and physicians. “The process that parents go through is tough,” she says.

“They experience a variety of emotions before they are ready to accept that their child’s delay may be more complex,” Noll explains. “Once families are ready, referrals are made so that they can get the appropriate help.”

So what are initial signs to look for that a child might have autism? According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, you should visit a physician if your child:

• Does not babble or coo by 12 months of age

• Does not gesture (point, wave, grasp, etc.) by 12 months of age

• Does not say single words by 16 months of age

• Does not say two-word phrases on his or her own (rather than just repeating what someone says to him or her) by 24 months of age

• Has any loss of any language or social skill at any age.

Stephanie and David Meier, Carmel parents of three, know about the struggles that families face when a child has autism. Both of their sons, Johnathan, 9, and Will, 8, were diagnosed with autism before reaching the age of two. Their daughter, Paige, 10, is a typical child.

When the couple first learned that Johnathan had autism, they were numb. “We were scared and totally unprepared,” Stephanie says. “We wondered, ‘How did this happen?’, ‘What did we do wrong?’, and ‘How can we fix it?’”

Once their second son, Will, was diagnosed, Stephanie says they weren’t surprised, but they still experienced the same raw and painful emotions as before.

“Every day we have our struggles, just like any other family,” Stephanie says. “Our struggles are just different.

Although Stephanie says that dealing with autism has actually brought her family closer together, she has seen other families torn apart. With that in mind, she offers advice for families who are struggling with an autism diagnosis.

“Don’t be in denial, and get help immediately,” Stephanie says. “There are many resources out there. You just

have to ask for help and don’t give up.”

“Also, take time out for yourself and try to spend time with all of your children, not just those with special needs,” Stephanie adds. “But most of all … don’t lose hope.”

In 1982, Terry and Ted Merrell were livestock hog farmers. They were looking for ways to save money in their own farming operation when they decided to take a big leap of faith and purchase their own truck to haul away the farm’s

So it was no real surprise when Terry Merrell’s son, Dustin, 21 and a graduate of the University of Northwestern of Ohio, also looked into the future and, with his good friend Zach Crumley (20) formed a new company, Sediment Removal Services (SRS), which now operates under the umbrella of Merrell Bros., Inc.

Between the admission fees, silent and live auctions, sponsorships, and private donations, Vines for Life officially raised $17,500 which will be split evenly between Creating Hope, Team Luke, and the Indy Survivoars.

Ameriana Bank was one of the first corporate sponsors to come on board to support the cause. Jerry Gassen, their CEO and Feather Cove I resident, attended the inaugural event last year and wanted to do more this year.

“It was a great evening, I met a lot of great people connected to these causes,” said Gassen.

Likewise, Ed Martin Automotive Group sponsored the evening as a presenting sponsor, throwing their behind all three charities. Kathy Harrison with the Ed Martin Automotive Group is president of the Indy Survivoars and one of the founding organizers of Vines for Life. She spoke on behalf of the Indy Survivoars during the event and had some of their dragonboat racing team members come forward to be acknowledged.

Over 60 wines were sampled all evening by Republic National Distributing Company, Elite Beverages, and Monarch Beverage employees. Upstairs, world famous

sommelier Arthur Black conducted a blind wine tasting, explaining the differences between eight wines.

Silent auctions were conducted all evening with a live auction hosted by Brown Bear Auctions. Among the items auctioned off live was a five course meal and wine pairing party by the Indianapolis Chef Academy and Elite Beverages, a 2-night stay at the King Estate Winery in Oregon, and a one-of-a-kind Marc Aronstam diamond-Tahitian pearl necklace.

This past September, Admirals Landing resident, Ned Campbell, climbed Mt. Kenya to help the villagers of Kager, (pronounced, Ka-GEHR) Kenya. His goal was to raise $16, 335, one dollar for every foot of the mountain. 100% of

funds raised will go toward the building construction costs of the Kager Medical Clinic expansion for the 4,000 villagers.

“I enjoy the adventure of travel, I love different cultures, and I feel called to find a way to help the

poor of the world,” says Campbell, who grew up oversees. His father’s job took him to Japan for his junior high school years and to London, England for his high school career.

“We’re not going to Kager and doing things for the villagers, but rather helping them learn to become more independent for the long term,” says Campbell, the founder of the Jubilee Village Project, a Christian based organization whose motto reads, “Changing the World, One Village at a Time.” The Jubilee Village Project (JVP) is partnering with the people of Kager Village in western Kenya to create sustainable community transformation. Campbell projects, “By the end of 2015, our goal is to leave this village and go on to serve another village.”

to Kenya two to four times per year and collaborate with volunteer villagers in Kenya. The Project focuses in on eight different sectors including food & farming, water & sanitation, housing & shelter, health & nutrition, energy & environment, transportation, education, and economic development.

How Jubilee Village ProJect beganAfter traveling and serving on a variety of church mission trips to different places for fifteen years, Campbell felt a calling and finally realized, “I knew it was time for me to stop and invest my life in a single village for a longer time.” Campbell will never forget the day he received a letter from a pastor in Kager, outlining their medical needs such as an ambulatory vehicle for transporting patients in emergency situations when they need to get to the nearest hospital (45 min. away) other than by means of a bicycle. This letter sparked Campbell’s heart in a new direction. In October 2008, Campbell started JVP (www.jubileevillage.org) and he and his team brought electricity to the medical clinic in Kager. This dramatically changed the healthcare for the village such as allowing full vaccines to be stored in refrigeration.

This year, Campbell combined the needs of Kager with his love for hiking and outdoors. Since he met a group last year who had climbed the highest peak in Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, he became motivated and decided it would be wiser to ease into mountain

With the funds raised for Campbell’s “Climb to End Poverty,” JVP plans to expand the current clinic to provide these components:

1. Open a laboratory (on-site) in order to provide better and more accurate diagnosis so that patients do not have to travel 45 min. away to the nearest hospital;

2. Add an area for delivering babies in a clean, sterile environment as opposed to mothers delivering babies in huts. The goal is to have a labor, delivery, and post-delivery area within clinic;

3. Provide an ambulatory vehicle that will save many lives in emergency situations when transporting patients to the nearest hospital.

In addition, JVP is helping to start and complete a High School for the village. Currently there are 90 students within a school made up of 9th and 10th graders. By the year 2013, the goal is to hold juniors and seniors as well.

Working full-time as a business executive with Zotec Partners in Carmel, Campbell volunteers nights and weekends to the work of JVP. He is a graduate of Ball State University and attends and serves at East 91st Street Christian Church. He has merged his knowledge of business, healthcare, and volunteering to embrace his calling to help inspire others and bring awareness to the needs of underprivileged people.

Campbell lives in Admirals Landing (for the past 17 yrs.) with his wife, Melissa. Together they have three daughters who attend: Indiana University, Lawrence Central, and Heritage Christian respectively.

Medals4Mettle (M4M) is a non-profit charitable organization that honors those with debilitating diseases or illnesses. Runners from around the world, who have competed in marathons, mini-marathons, and triathlons, donate their finishing medals to M4M. In turn, a global network of volunteers, including physicians personally award these hard-earned medals to children and adults who are running their own marathon as they fight life-threatening diseases with courage and mettle. This Indianapolis based organization, started in 2005 and has taken off its starting line to a never ending marathon of its own.

“It’s just amazing how fast this organization is growing,” says Steven F. Isenberg, MD, founder and CEO of Medals4Mettle. “Every day I get medals from all around the country and all around the world. This transcends among all cultures and represents what we call, ‘international currency of goodwill’.”

How Did M4M Begin?In 2003, Isenberg, a head and neck surgeon in Indianapolis, ran the Chicago Marathon at 53 years old. The next day, he went to the hospital to visit his colleague who was stricken with prostate cancer. Although Isenberg felt euphoric for having just finished the marathon, he also felt extreme sorrow for his patient, Les Taylor, who lay there in bed so utterly helpless. Not knowing what to say next, Isenberg reached into his pocket, pulled out his medal he had just

won the day before and gently placed it around Taylor’s neck. “I want you to have this,” he said. “You are running a much more difficult marathon than the one I completed.”

After Taylor had passed away, Isenberg had learned from Taylor’s wife, just how much this gift had meant to both of them. This inspired Isenberg to come up with M4M where other runners could also experience the satisfaction of awarding their earned medals to those who demonstrate mettle every day as they battle their own diseases, or illnesses, running their own marathon. M4M symbolizes our universal courage and inherent desire to reward and support others as they face life’s many challenges.

Since its inception in 2005, M4M has been recognized for the following:

• Featured as Grand Prize selection for the inaugural “Human Race” section of Runner’s World (September, 2008) and in many local/national publications.

• Attracted attention of Indy 500 race car drivers and Olympic athletes such as Bonnie Blair and Brian Sell who have chosen to experience the exhilaration of donating their hard earned medals to courageous human beings.

The Uniqueness of Medals4Mettle CharityWhereas most charities rely on collecting money from others to stay in the race, M4M collects medals instead. M4M works with established charitable organizations to generate awareness in order to provide runners a simple way to donate their medals to others. Almost every dollar donated goes directly to buy ribbons (designed by Walter Knabe) which M4M supplies for each medal donated. For instance, when M4M receives medals from runners, volunteers attach colorful branded ribbons to the medals before handing out to children or adults within a hospital. The other portion of proceeds covers minor expenses associated with the 501c3 public charity. Each dedicated volunteer of M4M is unpaid. They network by email and conference calls from homes or personal offices around the world to complete their mission.

Interestingly enough, each medal given to a recipient must be a medal that was earned in a marathon, mini-marathon, or triathlon. Runners can complete a Donation Form, providing information about themselves and their completed race, and even choose their recipient if they wish.

“I can’t believe all the wonderful volunteers for M4M,” says Isenberg humbly. “It’s not about me. It’s really

all about them. We have several local volunteers for the marathons: Indianapolis, Mini, Carmel, and Monumental. Most of them have helped me since day one and have never asked for anything in return.”

Speaking of originality, Isenberg represents a man of many talents. He is an ear, nose, throat, and head and neck surgeon, a marathon runner, a published poet, writer, and businessman. By the way, he continues to award his finishing medals to others including those within his own practice.

Double Inspiration“My sister-in-law (Mary Ochowicz-Sczesny) was battling breast cancer while her 16 year old son (David Sczesny) was stricken with bone marrow leukemia,” says Pam Kassner, M4M Coordinator of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “These two were the very first medals I ever gave out when I started the Milwaukee chapter three years ago.” Unfortunately, David inherited a rare protein which made the possibility of finding a matching donor look very bleak. Even after his mom started an organization (www.davidsdonors.com) and two months of waiting, David’s doctors decided to use Mary even though she was only a half match. But after a routine mammogram, she learned the dreadful, unexpected, and untimely news—Mary had breast cancer. She was devastated not for herself but the fact that she could no longer become David’s donor.

Miraculously, a donor was found for David. After receiving a bone marrow transplant some of the cancer was still present so he endured 10 rounds of chemotherapy. Mary had a lumpectomy, six months of chemo, and 33 rounds of radiation all while taking care of her son. Two years

later, she made the personal decision to have a mastectomy. In the middle of treatment both (mother and son) posed for a picture without their hair while wearing their M4M Medals that has captured a timeless heartwarming moment. Two years later, they posed once again together, only this time, not only were they sporting their medals but they were also wearing their post-chemo hair! Kassner recalls, “After David’s fifth month in a row indicating biopsy results with no evidence of disease, Mary (now in remission) finally got the courage to change her Facebook photo from the bald picture to the one with hair. It is a small gesture, but a huge step in putting cancer in the rearview mirror. Mary now joins us when we distribute medals.” Mary advocates, “The easiest way to be a hero and to save a life is to become a bone marrow donor.” (www.getswabbed.com)

Upcoming EventsOn October 30th, a group consisting of 21 runners in support of M4M plus 5 local volunteers from Indy (including Dr. Isenberg) will meet up together in Washington DC., to run in the Marine Corps Marathon and help raise money for M4M. The medals collected will be donated to wounded veterans and to children’s hospitals in the DC area.

Then, on May 19th, M4M will be teaming up with volunteers of the St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon. This will mark an opportunity for brave marathon runners to donate their medals to M4M. There will be volunteers to accept these valuable gifts. In turn, volunteers will later deliver the medals to the children who contain mettle of their own at these hospitals: Peyton Manning, St. Vincent, and Riley.

Heartfelt Appreciation Beyond the RecipientOne serendipitous advantage coming from the generous act of giving these hard earned medals away to worthy recipients is the heartfelt appreciation not just from the direct recipients themselves but from their family members, friends and volunteers as well. The two men vying for the position of Lawrence mayor have one commonality: they are both passionate about the northeast Indianapolis suburb. But, that’s where it ends as both candidates have very different ideas of how to move the City of Lawrence forward.

For Republican Mayor Paul Ricketts, it’s been a battle of rumors and public perception.

The former Lawrence Township Assessor defeated Democrat Deborah Cantwell in 2007. Since then, Ricketts’ health has become a big question on the minds of many Lawrence residents.

“In spite of the rumors of my demise,” he says. “I don’t have cancer.”

Ricketts does admit to battling a foot ulcer and is continuing his recovery from open-heart surgery back in March.

“I just want to continue to move Lawrence forward,” Ricketts says.

Democrat Dean Jessup doesn’t think Lawrence has moved very far in the four years since Ricketts took office. Jessup owns Civil Investigative Services and says he and his wife chose Lawrence as their home more than 25 years ago because it “wasn’t Indy.”

“I think we can be so much more,” he says. “We’ve been waiting for something great to happen.”

perspective on how Lawrence can expand on what it already has.

Ricketts is touting recent announcements on job creation, including a new Indiana National Guard Armory and a new complex on the Fort Harrison campus.

At the same time, Ricketts is battling criticism over the recent announcement of the Indiana Soccer Association’s plan to move its headquarters from Lawrence to Westfield.

Jessup, on the other hand, says Lawrence can make in-roads by embracing the arts as a means of enticing business. “We’ve developed a brand that is not as pleasant as we’d like it. We’re perceived as the folks that just fight all the time.”

Jessup compares Lawrence to Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver.

He says that town started bringing in more arts and culture as a means of survival.

“My fear is unchanged that we will be swallowed by Indianapolis,” he says.

Another concern both men share is public safety. Both want to put more officers on the street, but Jessup is eyeing a change in leadership at the top of the Lawrence Police Department.

“We need our own narcotics unit,” Jessup says. “We can work better with the Indianapolis Metro Police Department’s Drug Task Force that way.”

Ricketts says, if re-elected, he will “simply work harder to get more officers on the streets.” Ricketts says both Richmond and Columbus are smaller cities than Lawrence, but have more officers.

In a sort-of twist, Jessup got the endorsement of the man

who challenged Ricketts in the May primary.

John Solenberg gave the nod to Jessup back in July, touting Jessup’s track record serving on the Lawrence Fire Merit Commission and the Lawrence Community Development Commission.

Eight property owners along the newly improved 96th Street between Mollenkopf and Fall Creek Road have filed a petition with the Town of Fishers to rezone their properties from R2 residential to C2 commercial. Rezoning these homes would make way for businesses to build on the north side of 96th Street, and nearby homeowners fear this could lead to more commercial development in their backyards.

Ginny Cain, Indianapolis City Councillor that represents homeowners on the south side of 96th Street, feels that commercial development along this residential area could negatively impact residents in surrounding neighborhoods.

“This is not Marion County but a Hamilton County, Fishers decision. However, if this domino falls, it could negatively impact Geist Woods and the homes behind this strip of homes,” she said.

Neighborhoods adjacent to this stretch of homes include South Avalon Estates, Lighthouse Cove, Geist Woods, and Masthead.

UPDATE: The first hearing on the matter is scheduled next Wednesday, November 15th at the Fishers Town Hall (One Municipal Drive) at 6:30 pm. The Fishers Planning Committee will be reviewing this petition and public comment will be allowed. F any teens have a tough time buckling down to study when they get home from school. There’s so many distractions with sports, friends and social events. But, if they have their own private place to study,

it may help make homework time a little more fun!

I turned to Professional Organizer Susan Otto for some tips

on putting together a teen study spot. The Carmel resident started her own business called “Space Galore” and has been helping clients clear their clutter for years.

There is usually some extra space in the home,” says Susan. “It is just a matter of finding it!”

Susan went right to work finding a corner area of a spare bedroom which was just perfect for setting up a desk with some shelves.

“You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a desk, “says Susan. “Just make sure it is big enough to hold a computer

and notebooks.” I picked up a lime green chair from Target ($19.99) to go with the desk.

Here’s a few tips from the expert once you find your teen study spot.

• A chair with wheels moves around easily and is easy on the carpet

• Add some colorful containers for supplies such as pencils, pens, markers, stapler and glue

• Create a file kit for parents with hanging folders in a box; one file per child for important paper work

• Keep a catch-all container nearby so they can drop off belongings when they get home and that will be waiting for them the next morning

• A dry erase calendar is good to mark test days and finals month-to-month. This helps the student visually see

The word, “Geist” is German for spirit or ghost. Appropriately so, the graveyards within the Geist area have been here for hundreds of years enduring many obstacles, ranging from weather, erosion, falling trees, construction work, vandalism, fire and time. A handful of them have been destroyed. Yet, all of them deserve some recognition.

At Halloween, we typically think of cemeteries as normal backdrops for that perfect scene in a scary flick with fog hovering over the tombstones covered in cobwebs and the possibility of seeing a ghost. We tend to associate evil spirits hanging out in the graveyards. But some people in Geist believe quite the opposite.

“I am not afraid of the cemetery in the least bit,” says Mandy Valentine, resident of the Chesapeake neighborhood whose backyard juts up to Todd Cemetery. “In fact, it gives character to my home … I have a lot respect for these

deceased people who probably lived here and farmed this area. Hopefully, others would have the same respect for me as I have for these people.” Incidentally, most of the names of the cemeteries stem from the family surname that owned the land.

Valentine grew up surrounded by death. She was raised by her grandparents. Since many of their family members and friends had passed away in her presence, she attended very many funerals at various cemeteries. In fact, she recalls going with her grandfather to put flowers on the graves of her great grandparents at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Later, her grandfather passed away and ironically, was buried on Halloween Day.

Another Geist resident who feels completely comfortable living next to the graveyard is Myron Reynolds, who says, “I enjoy having people come down my driveway (which leads right into Bills Cemetery,) and visit. This doesn’t bother me a cotton-pickin’ bit.”

Reynolds could tell you hours’ worth of interesting observations about Bills Cemetery such as how it is the highest cemetery off the ground in the area, since the ground needed to be dry and protected when burying bodies that were typically covered in shrouds and laid in wooden boxes. He would tell you that this burial ground is believed to be the oldest in the area, contemporaneous with Conner Prairie, since a man named Michael Mock, was born as early as 1775 as stated on his original epitaph. Reynolds describes how he has witnessed boy scouts rubbing the stones (taking imprints,) resetting the stones, and helping to maintain the property.” He would proudly delineate those who have partaken in geocaching, a worldwide outdoor sporting activity, where participants use a GPS mobile device to locate the hidden cache or waterproof containers and communicate online about their experience, which is usually educational, offering historical significance of a particular site.

As we approach Veteran’s Day, which will be celebrated this year on 11-11-11, we should recognize several cemeteries housing the souls of the honorable, noteworthy and brave men who died during the Civil War. For example, Mt. Zion, a churchyard cemetery located south of Geist and east of Brooks and McKay Cemeteries off Olio Road, contains eleven soldiers. The Lowery (Klepfer) cemetery off of 136th and Promise Road, east of New Britton has ten graves of soldiers. The Bethlehem, off Olio and 136th, near SR 238, also known as Johnson intersection, has seven Civil War soldiers. The Arnett Cemetery, north of the iron bridge that crosses Fall Creek at the east end of Geist Reservoir has

five graves of soldiers. The Bills Cemetery has at least one soldier.

CemeterySome graveyards have had to be worked around because of their location playing a factor in how the roads and neighborhoods are laid out. For example, Olio Road is in the process of being widened from a two lane to a five lane, which has an impact on McKay and Brooks Cemeteries.

“We try to stay away from cemeteries,” says Joel Thurman, Project Manager of the Hamilton County Highway Dept. “The Brooks Cemetery sits closest to Olio Road … As a result, the alignment of the center will get shifted to the east.” Also, Rob Bussell of The Marina Limited Partnership has had a few encounters over the years

with developing communities around cemeteries. He says, “We always try to respect the existing cemetery by blending it into the development of the community.”

Taking care of cemeteries has not always been a priority. Take for instance, Valentine (mentioned earlier) who once had trees draping over her property onto her home from the disheveled Todd Cemetery, and squirrels invading her attic. After attending the neighborhood association meeting one day, she met a woman who would make all the difference in a graveyard: Marianne Rhinesmith. Rhinesmith was the

President of the Chesapeake Neighborhood Association and had tried for years to get the Lawrence Township Trustees to help support her in maintaining the Geist cemeteries, which for a long time have looked abandoned. Rhinesmith and Valentine attended many meetings together. Finally, after Russell Brown, Lawrence Township Trustee was appointed and then elected in 2010, they were able to persuade him to take action.

“I think they got so sick of seeing me and Mandy (Valentine) sitting in the front row of these meetings that they knew they had to do something,” says Rhinesmith with a laugh. “In 2004, the Lawrence Board and Lawrence Trustee started with $18,000 in the budget and by 2008, I was able to convince them to set aside $50,000 for cemetery upkeep, renovation, and maintenance.” So far, Lawrence Township has fixed up three cemeteries in 2010 and three more this past year. Some of these renovations have included recording surveys/boundaries, leveling out land, putting up white fences, and displaying signs.

Rhinesmith added, “Our elected officials have taxpayer money in their budgets to take care of these lands that are often left neglected. Elected officials must be forced to listen to taxpayers because these deceased and long-forgotten taxpayers cannot speak for themselves, so someone must step up and speak for them.”

“Since I’ve been Trustee, one of the areas of emphasis has been paying special attention to the public cemeteries,” says Lawrence Township Trustee, Russell Brown. “These cemeteries contain so much history and we owe it to these pioneers to be respectful of their contributions to the foundations of our culture. I’m happy that we have those in our community who are so vigilant about seeing these gems properly maintained and cared for.”

Rhinesmith and her friend, Sharon Strecker, volunteer their efforts by planting day lilies at various cemeteries and the common grounds in order to spruce up the appearance and give back to the community. Rhinesmith declares, “These cemeteries are a part of our heritage that must be protected and respected by everyone. Our present generation may well be defined by how well it has respected and valued our far-reaching and influential forefathers.”

Many perceive cemeteries as haunted plots of land where ghosts are lurking behind every stone. Others try and demoralize and vandalize these sacred pieces of land as almost a way of “bullying the ghosts.” Yet, some remain proud and eager to continue protecting, honoring, and respecting these hallowed compartments of historical significance.

Have any of you out there realized that every fall it seems your Sundays take on a new meaning? Does your spouse, partner, or significant other turn into an entirely different person for 17 to 22 weeks from September to February? And then, do they spend the next six months telling you how they can’t wait until next season? Were you like me and thought that when you heard Peyton Manning was out for the season (most likely), you might have the chance at a few normal Sundays – you know, church, lunch, playing with the kids in the backyard? Not a chance. If this sounds familiar, you too are married, dating or spending too much time with an NFL football fan.

Having grown up in a family of all girls, with a dad who couldn’t tell you if Peyton Manning played football or was a member of the cast of SNL, it has been quite an eye opening experience to be married to a man who literally wears the same outfit for every Colts home game, down to the same hat that he claims helped them reach and win a Superbowl. I don’t have the heart to tell him that I think he accidentally switched hats with an identical version of the hat this year, which may explain the current Colts season; I am concerned that he will blame himself for Manning’s injury and the Colts collapse.

My husband, Josh, is by my estimation a true Colts fan and every September our life takes on a true blue meaning. So much so, Josh will not even entertain alternative plans on Colts Sundays, unless of course I make him. “What? Who has a birthday party during a Colt’s game? They must not be a Colt’s fan.” This has been said very seriously to me more than once throughout the years.

Josh is not alone. Colt’s fans come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Some admit it and some try and hide it, especially this year. Josh does not, however, sugar coat his annoyance with friends and family who schedule birthday parties or ask him to schedule outings on a Colt’s game day. “That’s just ridiculous,” he will say. “Who in their right mind would do such a thing?” Or when asked to play flag football on Sunday afternoons this fall, Josh declined questioning

how much fun flag football could be when real football fans, i.e., people who may actually know how to play football, would be watching the Colts and NFL football all afternoon on Sundays.

In my world, home or away, it is inexcusable to miss a Colt’s game. Thank goodness for DVR, the only way he (and many other fans no doubt) will ever consider missing a live broadcast of a Colts game. In the rare event we are able to do something extracurricular on a Sunday, Josh refuses to answer his phone, view texts or emails, or listen to the radio in fear he will hear the score and ruin his game viewing pleasure. For example, in January 2005, when the Colts played the Steelers in the AFC divisional playoff round, Josh begrudgingly agreed to have our first born baptized that Sunday. Seriously, he wanted to know every possible alternative date before agreeing only after realizing our daughter would be nearly one year old if we kept waiting

(I have to admit, I had no idea this was a playoff game or frankly who we were playing; thanks honey for filling in these details). Consequently, we had strict rules for the baptism and after party. To attend, friends and family had to agree not to check the score or share any news about the game, so that when we all returned home from the baptism, we could watch it as though it was live. Then when the Colts lost because that kicker with the weird name, Vander-something, missed that field goal, Josh was convinced our day had somehow upset the football gods and it has been a

rare occasion since that we do anything, outside watching games as a family, on Sundays.

And don’t get me started on his “man cave.” Our basement is a Colts shrine adorned with what he consider the finest pieces of art, to the extent that Colt’s paraphernalia can be considered “art.” I am regularly amazed by the question I get each time he tries to hang his newest piece: “This looks great, don’t you think?” Josh asks as he hangs another signed, mirrored picture of some Colt’s player or jersey. I

remind him that “it’s just another thing for the kids to try and avoid while they are playing soccer in the basement.” His response, “please try and keep them from hitting this,” as he hangs it above the soccer goal.

I thought Josh was a crazed Colts fan until I met one of Josh’s friends, Ed Holloran, a tried and true Colt’s fan like no other. Now Ed is a not a face-painting lunatic like I see when I go to games, but Ed is one of the most endearing Colts fans you will ever meet. Not only is Ed the biggest fan of Indianapolis, the city, he is a die-hard Colts fan who wants everyone he meets on a Sunday to join him as he celebrates another Colts season and convert to his second religion. To accomplish his goal of converting the masses, Ed hosts a tailgate before each home game at Victory Field that is simply unrivaled – at least in my humble opinion; but in fairness, my tailgating history was limited to cracking a beer in the tailgate of my dad’s truck at the local tractor pull in southern Indiana.

Regardless, every home game, Ed selects a specific cuisine from the opposing teams’ hometown. For example, for the October 9 game against the Chiefs, he made Kansas City style barbeque. In the past, he has made sushi for Seattle, cheesesteak for Philadelphia, New York Strip when we played the Giants (they are from New York, right?). Ed plans his meals before the season begins and often spends days cooking and preparing the meals, sometimes cooking all night long. “This is my life,” says Ed. “I live for tailgating and cheering on the Colt’s.” He too has a basement filled with Colt’s gear and autographed everything (as an aside, I just learned that Ed’s soon to be born son will be named “Colton,” Colt for short, you get it). I’ve been told that he bleeds blue. Yet, to his credit, the crowd that surrounds his real Weber grill on Colt’s Sundays seems to grow each year and the legend continues.

Like Josh and Ed, there are no doubt thousands of others just like them. Men, women and children a like. So as I suffer through yet another year of NFL football, I smile at the simple foolishness of it all. But I have to say, now that I have three young children, two of which who are old enough to dress themselves, it is fun to see how excited they get to don their Colt’s Sunday best and, the excitement they share with their father as he explains how Dallas Clark, Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne combined to win a game (ok that was last year, but you get the drill). In the end, I will

never be a die-hard Colts fan, but I cannot help but get caught up in Colts fever every now and then. Here’s to next year (as I understand we are likely not going to make the playoffs, though I am not really sure why that is such a big deal as they play again next year). By the way, what’s this “Suck for Luck” campaign I keep hearing about?

Husband and wife team Phillip and Amy Parham faced an extreme challenge together when they appeared on season six of The Biggest Loser, but their need to get physically healthy wasn’t the only challenge they have faced as a family. The Parham’s youngest son, Rhett, is autistic.

According to the Community Autism Resources Forum, “Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in America, with 1 in 110 children (and 1 in 70 boys) being impacted by the disorder. Because Autism is a ‘spectrum’ disorder – with symptoms ranging from very mild to severe – it can impact individuals, and their families,

very differently. The most significant shared symptom is difficulty with social interaction, including eye contact, conversation, even being able to empathize with someone else or see things from their perspective.”

For Rhett, said Amy, that means, “It’s been a struggle for him to learn. It’s been a struggle for him to go to regular school.”

She and her husband have tried many therapies and programs with Rhett and “we’ve had success with some and not success with others,” Amy admitted, but one in

particular has been the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel: the brain training center LearningRx.

Local residents Kelli and Garnett Craig have had a similar experience with their son, Joshua, who also falls within the autism spectrum. Like the Parhams, the Craigs saw their son struggling in school with social interaction that came so easily to other children, and his reading comprehension was also lacking. “There was a definite disconnect there,” said Kelli.

The Craigs learned about LearningRx Indianapolis at 9767 Fall Creek Road in the Kroger plaza in Geist through research on the Internet, took Joshua in for assessment testing and made the decision to invest some time and money in the LearningRx program.

That was two years ago, and Kelli is happy to report that today, now in the fourth grade, Joshua has retained the skills he gained at LearningRx, including improved conversation skills, the ability to make better connections and complete tasks. He even found new interests through the program.

According to the LearningRx website, “Children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), Autism, or Asperger’s Syndrome respond well to treatment that is regular and predictable. Brain training through LearningRx is highly ordered, and establishes rewarding and predictable success. Student programs are individually designed and are delivered one-on-one by skilled and sensitive trainers. Progress is regular, systematic, and can even be tracked and recognized by the child.

“Training provides more than just a positive structure. It also specifically addresses cognitive needs that are critical to improvement in these students. Test results have shown that children diagnosed with PDD, Autism, or Asperger’s Syndrome most commonly display weaknesses in short-term memory, processing speed, and logic and reasoning skills. These are some of the primary skills that brain training can impact.”

Perhaps the most rewarding change that LearningRx brain training can help individuals who fall on the autism spectrum realize is a significantly more enjoyable and productive life experience.

WZPL (99.5) radio offers a special program called “Hey mom, I’m on WZPL” where kids are invited to be a DJ for a day. I thought I would check it out when my 11 year old boy, Johnny, wanted to give it a try.

We arrived at WZPL (9245 Meridian street)in the afternoon and were greeted by “Hunter” who took us to a studio.

Johnny recorded several lines with Hunter, saying things such as “You’re listening to 99.5 WZPL” or “You can be a DJ too, just go to the website at WZPL.com.”

Johnny, who decided his on air name would be “Johnny-be-good,” recorded lines for about 30 minutes then Hunter told him to say something on his own.

“Johnny-be-good” gave a shout out to some of his school buddies and then delivered a messge to “Smiley”— the morning DJ at WZPL— saying that he would soon be taking his job! So, how did Johnny enjoy his DJ experience?

“It was a little scary when they first turn the microphone on,” says Johnny-be-good. “But, once you get going, it was really fun!”

Thanksgiving gets no respect. It’s the Rodney Dangerfield of

holidays, and I’m not going to take it anymore.

Every year I stand by and watch as Americans abruptly switch their attention

from stale, leftover Halloween candy to twinkling lights and eggnog. I’ve even caught the holidays themselves contributing to the injustice.

Just the other day I saw Halloween standing on one side of Thanksgiving, while Christmas and Hanukkah were standing on the other, all yelling, “SUCK IT,” right to Thanksgiving’s face. Then they proceeded to brag about their fancy costumes, special music and festive galas. All Thanksgiving gets is a Turkey symbol and a bad reputation for carbs and calories.

Although the original reason for Thanksgiving is to set aside a day of thanks for bountiful harvests, celebrants have rapidly learned to show gratitude for a number of additional things, including: winning sports seasons; regular bowel movements; microbreweries; and spectacular sales at the mall.

Over the years, poor Thanksgiving has evolved into a please-just-let-me-get-through-this kind of day, with millions of citizens praying for the ability to tolerate long-lost cousins and grumpy grandparents for an entire afternoon. This is why football was invented … to serve as a distraction from awkward family conversations and potentially explosive confrontations.

In fact, it has been proven that shortly after the very first Thanksgiving, the pilgrims immediately started getting sick of each other. They started arguing about whose pumpkin pie was best and who told the funniest jokes. This caused

the teen pilgrims to roll their eyes and say, “Forget this, let’s get out of here and have some fun.” So they started playing a crude version of tag with a dried up gourd. This eventually turned into what we now know as football, and the rest is history. Everyone knows this to be true.

Then years later those giant parade balloons shoved themselves into the spotlight. “If football gets all the attention during the day, then we want a piece of the morning action,” said Bullwinkle. So huge parades were organized, and soon the Rockettes were kicking up their heels in Santa outfits, and celebrities were lip-synching cheesy Christmas songs and riding on top of bulky floats.

Thanksgiving never even had a chance. And to add insult to injury, there isn’t even a decent selection of catchy tunes to commemorate the day. I’m quite sure that no pop icon has ever said, “Hey, Mr. Music Executive, I want to put together a star-studded Thanksgiving CD!” What would be on the playlist? I’m Dreaming of Some White Gravy, Let There Be Peace at Dinner, or All I Want for Thanksgiving Is a Two-Point Spread?

It’s hopeless. So this year I’m going to knit my very own Thanksgiving sweater and decorate my entire yard with winter squash. I’m going to give thanks for every single blessing in my life, and I will smile and embrace every last relative, no matter how crazy they are. Now, where’s the eggnog?
