To Our Community

The Foundation has become a part of our community. We now administer over 200 funds from donors of all ages, including our energetic Teen Philanthropists, some of whom are shown on the cover of this report.

Through the opening of 27 new funds since our last report, we have also facilitated contributions to 340 non-profits since the beginning of our Foundation nine years ago, and 160 since our last report.

We continued to stay focused on building endowments and bequests, taking a collaborative approach. Working in partnership with endowment committees from across the community, we assist synagogues, agencies and organizations in obtaining endowments for their programs.

Our investment committee continues to monitor and influence our portfolio and have results better than the market indices with which we are compared.

We have had meetings, information requests and interaction with hundreds of interested persons during the year who support, wish to support, or learn about our aims.

We solicit your interest and would be pleased to meet or answer questions regarding the Foundation and appreciate the encouragement that has grown through the activities of our Board of Directors and the undersigned.

Thank you for taking the time to read this report. Linda Alexander Executive Director

Treasurer’s Report

With the continuing recession, this was another challenging year for the Foundation. For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, our assets under administration increased by $743,452 which represents a 20% increase over last year. This compares to a 22.7% decrease in assets for the year ended June 30, 2009. The return on our pooled endowment, managed by our Investment Committee, was up 9.24% for the year ended June 30, 2010. This compares to a -25.1% negative return for the year ended June 30, 2009. We maintained control over our operating expenses, but the decrease in contributions and interest income resulted in a net loss for the current fiscal year of $11,315.

With the continued dedicated hard work of all those involved, we look forward to continued growth of the Foundation’s assets for the coming year so we will have the resources to benefit our community.

Howard A. Port Esq. CPA Secretary/Treasurer

One of the most satisfying aspects of philanthropy is the ability of the donor to participate in the grant-making process. Donor Advised Funds represent a unique opportunity to do just that. Funds can be opened with a minimum gift of $2,500. You name the fund for your family or as a memorial to a loved one and you recommend grants, minimum of $100 each, to all not-for-profits. You can even designate other family members to succeed you as advisers to the Fund – into perpetuity.

You get a full tax deduction in the year you make your gift and you can defer your distribution grants to future years.

The Foundation currently manages 82 Donor Advised Funds, 12 newly opened this fiscal year.

Rabbi Rachel AinEach year our Foundation honors a member of our community with a Legacy Award in recognition of their advocacy and service to our Jewish community. This year we have chosen Rabbi Rachel Ain for our 2010 Legacy Award.

In the short number of years Rabbi Ain has lived in our community, she has had such a positive and constructive impact that the Foundation Boardof Trustees overwhelmingly found her deserving of the Legacy Award, its highest and most distinguished honor.

Rabbi Ain has been the Rabbi at Congregation Beth Sholom – Chevra Shas since July 2004. During that time she has been involved in many community activities, including, but not limited to: serving as the chair of the PJ Library Advisory committee; sitting on the board of the Syracuse Jewish Family services; volunteering as a Judaic curriculum resource for the JCC’s Early Childhood Development Program, and working with the Syracuse Jewish Federation to secure camperships for Jewish children attending Jewish overnight camps.

When told about this honor, Rabbi Ain gratefully accepted adding “I believe it is important to have a Foundation in our Jewish community which focuses on long term growth and commitments from a financial perspective. It is important that there is an organization like the Foundation which can spend its time making the wise and necessary decisions which will ensure financial health for organizations, today, tomorrow and in the future.”

Rabbi’s community involvement was instilled in her both by her own active participation during her childhood and by modeling her parent’s participation. She grew up in Potomac, MD, a suburb of Washington, DC. She was involved in her Conservative Synagogue as a child, attended the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School for high school, was a camper at Camp Ramah in New England and a participant in many USY programs. Growing up as a “Federation kid,” Rabbi Ain saw first hand the tremendous impact there could be on a community when its leaders worked together for the health of that community and its future. She remembers spending every Super Sunday as a volunteer, attending trainings with her mother and then even making some calls on her own. This active involvement by her

mother in the Federation of Greater Washington was a major impact on Rabbi Ain’s outlook on tzedakah and community mindfulness.

Rabbi Ain is married to Rabbi David Levy, the Director of Admissions for the Rabbinical and Cantorial Schools at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. They have two sons, Jared and Zachary.

Thank you Rabbi Ain for your inspiring leadership in our community!

B’nai Mitzvah Fund Program

18

Teen Philanthropy Through a Jewish Lens.A program for teens celebrating their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs in 2010 & 2011.

Do you want to make a child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah the life-changing, meaningful experience that we all wish? Then open a B’nai mitzvah

fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Central New York.

If interested, please contact Linda AlexanderCall 445-2040 ext. 130 or email [email protected]

Beyond the party.Beyond the family.Beyond the hora.

Beyond all the gifts.

Here’s how it works:1. Teens contribute $250 from the gifts they receive for their Bar/Bat

Mitzvahs to open a fund, in their name, at the Foundation.2. A matching gift of $250 is donated to each B’nai Mitzvah Fund from

the Sam Pomeranz Trust.3. Teen fund holders then recommend which charities they want to

send their money to. The Foundation sends a check to the charity in the name of the teen’s B’nai Mitzvah Fund.

Teen Funders CommitteeThis year we added a new twist. All B’nai Mitzvah Funders were invited to join the Teen Funders Committee to work together and decide how to distribute the money. Local non-profits agencies made presentations to the Teen Funders Committee. Then the Teen Funders directed financial grants to selected agencies. Nancy Belkowitz assisted as the Teen Funders Co-ordinator.Join those who have already opened B’nai Mitzvah Funds

Ways of giving to the Foundation

20

The Foundation accepts any of the following assets.

Outright gifts of cash or securitiesOne of the easiest ways to set up a fund at the Foundation is through cash or appreciated securities. Gifts can be made whenever you choose or in one lump sum. You receive the full tax deduction for your contribution in the year you make it. If the donation is made with appreciated securities, the donor pays no capital gains tax and is able to take an immediate charitable income tax deduction for the gift’s full fair market value of the gift.

BequestsA bequest in your will is the simplest way to make a gift to ensure Jewish continuity after your lifetime. You may choose to leave a specific amount, a residual or a percent of your estate by adding a simple codicil to your will. Your taxable estate is reduced by the amount of the charitable bequest and your gift creates a lasting legacy to your life.

Life Insurance PoliciesYou may make a charitable gift by purchasing life insurance to benefit a fund at the Foundation, or by naming the Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy that you no longer need. A new life insurance policy can enable someone with many current family obligations to turn a relatively small contribution into a dramatically larger gift and all premiums are tax deductible. A paid up life insurance policy, that is no longer needed, makes an excellent gift and you receive an income tax deduction for the cash surrender value of the policy.

State of Israel BondsYou can donate Israel Bonds that you have purchased and receive a tax deduction for your gift.

Retirement PlansDid you know that any funds remaining in an Individual Retirement Account ( IRA) or other type of retirement plan might be taxed up to 80% after your death and/or your spouse’s? The taxes due on your IRA can be avoided by naming the Foundation as the beneficiary of your retirement plan. Your gift can benefit any fund at the Foundation and the exorbitant taxes will not have to be paid.

Real Estate or personal propertyGift planning through real estate holds many possibilities, and may be the perfect asset to consider when making a significant charitable donation. You can donate land, a building, or even shares of a limited partnership that owns real estate. If you have owned real estate for more than 12 months and it has appreciated in value, you can donate the property to any fund at the Foundation. We sell it, you avoid the capital gains tax and receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the property. The property is no longer part of your estate.

Charitable Gift Annuity

21

A meaningful gift with a guaranteed income

Economic uncertainties and an unstable market have many supporters looking at the guaranteed returns of a Charitable Gift Annuity. It is a planned giving vehicle that provides a lifetime income, a charitable tax deduction, and a way to make a meaningful gift to the Jewish community.Charitable Gift Annuities typically enjoy a higher rate of return than most conservative investments. And they are never subject to market fluctuations.

Here’s how it works:

Fixed Income for Life– You receive guaranteed payments on a quarterly or annual basis for the

remainder of your life, or for two lives if you include a family member or friend.

Income Tax Deduction – Part of your gift is deductible and part of your income payments

are tax free.

Minimum Gift – For as little as $5,000, you can enjoy the benefits of a

Charitable Gift Annuity.

Minimum Age– You must be 60 years of age to begin receiving payments immediately,

but starting at age 55 you can establish a deferred gift annuity by delaying payments until you reach age 60. The older you are when the annuity payments begin, the higher the payment rate.

* Effective rate is higher because part of the income payments are tax-free – this example assumes an income tax rate of 25%
