Some Facts about Leitrim

Leitrim is the 26th largest county in Ireland, yet it is the smallest of Connachts counties.

Leitrim is approximately two hours from Dublin and Belfast.

Leitrim is known to have one of the highest participation rates in third level education of any county in Ireland.

Costello Chapel

The Costello Memorial Chapel is the smallest chapel in Europe and the 2nd smallest chapel in the world.

It was built by Edward Costello and was built in memory of his wife Josephine

The Chapel is so small that doesn’t have seating.

Drumkeeran Heritage Centre

Drumkerran Heritage Centre celebrates the history of the area in county Leitrim.

The Heritage Centre is a reconstructed traditional Irish cottage.

Glencar Waterfall

Glencar Waterfall is 50ft high and is situated in Glencar Lough,

It is served as an inspiration to William Butler Yeats. It is very impressive after rain and can be viewed from a lovely wooded walk, there is also a picnic area

Although it is not the largest waterfall in Ireland it is considered to be one of the most beautiful.

Parkes Castle

It was built by Robert Parke in 1609, it is three stories high and it situated on the banks of Lough Gill.

Reconstructed inside are some of the features of the inner courtyard, such as a blacksmith’s forge, a well and a water gate.

You can also wander around the battlements, admire expansive views of the lough.
