Governor’s Address

Greetings Georgia Key Clubbers,

I hope that all of you are having a great school year! As we are approaching the end of the Key Club Service Year I hope that you are all ready for District Convention and election of your successors. Please keep in mind that officer elections need to be held prior to District Convention, so officers can receive the officer training they need at convention. We are looking forward to you joining us for Surfing through Service on Feb. 28- March 2, 2014 in St. Simons Island, Georgia. We have an awesome weekend planned with a mentalist show, new work-shops, exciting sessions and a great new location! This year we will be expanding our service fair too, we will be inviting various colleges and community organizations to give you the opportunity to explore your future goals. We have also added a new layout to convention to add a little differentiation from the past! It is saddening that my term is coming to a close and that I only have a few short months left to serve as Governor. It has been worth all the stress and long nights to see the progress that all of our clubs have made so far. We cur-rently have he highest percentage of dues paid clubs internationally, as well as the highest percentage of attendance increase! This could not be done without awesome club members like you! We are excited to see what else we can accomplish within the upcoming months. I wish you all the best of luck in your service endeavors for the next few months. Thank you for allow-ing me the year of a lifetime, let’s finish what we started Georgia Key Clubbers!

In Service,

Katie Fuller Governor of the Georgia District of Key Club International

Greetings Georgia District,

I hope all is well especially since school has been stressful for everyone (trust me, I know). I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has turned in their dues! You guys are amazing. For those of you who have not turned in their dues, please, please turn it in. FOR EXISTING CLUBS, YOU GUYS JUST NEED ONE, YES ONE MEMBER TO STAY ACTIVE!

Please remember that dues are a vital part of carrying on Key Club business. Dues are what funds district event like Rallies, which by the way is on January 11th Macon, and conventions. To pay dues, please visit keyclub.org/MUC to register members and to generate an invoice which is to be sent to Kiwanis International Office If you have any comments, questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me or your Lieutenant Governors.

Your Friend In Service,

Greetings,

I hope that everyone has had a terrific year of service thus far and will continue to do so! Since the beginning of the school year, many schools have turned in Officer Information. I am so very pleased with the progress. We now have around 40% of all the Officer Information turned in! There are still a few schools who have not submitted their information. If you have not turned in your schools Officer Informa-tion, you can either submit it on the Georgia Key Club website under the ‘Officer Information’ tab or send it to your Division Lieutenant Governor by email. Also be on the lookout for the awesome District-wide events coming up soon. For any of the District event dates, check the website! Keep up the awesome year of service everyone!

Yours in Friendship and Service,Hallie SmithDistrict Secretary

A weekend in November, all branches of the Kiwanis family got together to not only raise money for The Eliminate Project, but share the gift of service. Sound exciting? It was exactly that! The Georgia District held its first ever Kiwanis Family Day at the Georgia Tech v.s. Alabama A&M football game Saturday, November 23rd at 1:30 P.M. Tickets were sold 40% off face value and to enhance the event, the Georgia District offered a pre-game tailgate 2 1/2 hours before kickoff. Tailgate attendees had a catered barbeque meal, played cornhole toss, and got to know each other through different stories of service. Overall, the Georgia District was very success-ful in their first ever Kiwanis Family Day and raised over $800 for The Eliminate Project!

Kiwanis Family

DayOn August 24th members of the Georgia District of Key Club International joined at Six Flags over Georgia for a fun filled day of rides and officer training! We hosted the largest event ever with over 350 Key Club Members there! It was a great success! We enjoyed having all of you join us to kick off the service year, and we hope that you had an amazing time! For those of you who did not attend, well you missed out on some great bonding and fun games! We hope to see you at Georgia District Rally on Ja-nurary 11th for more leadership activities and club bonding!

International Trustee

Greetings Mighty Georgia District,

As we prepare for the Holidays, I want to update you all with some very important information from Key Club International. December 31 marks the end of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this year, so make sure to fit in those last minute fundraisers and to send in your funds by this date. Send all Trick-or-Treat funds to:

The Eliminate Project: Campaign OfficeKiwanis International Foundation3636 Woodview TraceIndianapolis, IN 46268 USAATTN: Trick-or-Treat

Make sure you write the club name or club number on the memo line of the check, and also mail the completed gift form,

which you can receive from your lieutenant governors. As most of you probably already know, just a few weeks ago, we exceeded the US$2million benchmark for this year’s Eliminate fundraising initiative. We are now pledging to raise US$1.5million by the end of the Kiwanis year in October 2014. US$1.5million is needed to vaccinate 1.9 million women and their future newborns in 62 districts in the Democratic Re-public of the Congo. US$1.2million are needed for operational costs including cold chain storage, trans-portation, health worker stipends, health education materials, etc. and approximately US$285,000 covers the vaccination costs. Although this is a big goal, we believe that, together, as a Kiwanis Family, anything is possible. Even though our Trick-or-Treat fundraiser may be coming to a close, do not stop fundraising! It is your drive, eagerness, and passion that fuel this organization! Be sure to check out our November Board Meeting minutes on the Key Club website to find out more information on what was discussed! There, you will find committee updates and what exactly was voted upon! Hopefully all of your clubs turned in their dues by December 1! I hope you are all excited for what the rest of the service year holds. Also, be sure to share with me how exactly your clubs are serving this Holiday season! Just shoot me an email ([email protected]), and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me! I’d love to hear from you.

Yours in Caring and in Service,Zachary WaldorfInternational Trustee

Boo at the Zoo By: Vanessa Boone The Sandy Creek High School participated in the Zoo Atlanta annual Halloween weekend extravaganza “Boo at the Zoo”. The club has participated in this event for the past 3 years and has a great time each year! The zoo hosts two fun, activity packed weekends in October to celebrate Halloween with the guests. It can get pretty crazy so that’s where the volunteers come in! Our Key

Clubbers helped out at different stations such as arts and crafts, Trick-or-Treating, and games. At arts and crafts stations, the volunteers help younger guests with the dif-ferent arts and crafts like making hats & necklaces and coloring. At the Trick-or-Treating stations, volunteers pass out candy and small treats to the guests around the zoo. At the game stations, the volun-teers lead different Halloween themed games. After the event is over, the Zoo gives the volunteers a zoo ticket to appreciate their work!

Habersham Central High School By: Emma Matthews The Habersham Central Key Club loves to help their sponsoring Kiwanis Club, the Clarkesville Kiwanis Club, and every year around Halloween, the Clarkesville Kiwanis Club sets up what they call the “Zombie Fun Run.” This fundraiser is a distance race to the finish line without having your brains eaten by zombies. Runners have to dodge zombies throughout the running course in an effort to keep all of their survival flags. All money raised at this event (including registration, concessions, etc.), goes toward the Clarkesville Kiwanis Club. Key clubbers helped by participating in the race itself, assisting with the event set up, and/or volunteering to dress up as the actual zombies found inside the race. On the day of the race, over 300 runners were registered and over 200 zombies volunteered, leading the Clarkesville Kiwanis Club to say that this was one of their most suc-cessful fundraisers, and that they couldn’t have done it without the help of the Habersham Central Key Club.

Rivers AliveBy: Avya Bhargave

Sandy Creek High School participated in the Rivers Alive Clean Up on November 2nd. Rivers Alive clean ups allow people to come together to club up around rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. The Sandy Creek Key Club participated in the Rivers Alive in Tyrone, Georgia to clean up around the Flint and Lynwood Rivers and Creeks. Often, people find ten-nis balls, Styrofoam cups, and a lot of plastic products. These products can hurt the environment by negatively affecting the wild life which lives there. Sandy Creek took action to make their environment. They filled several trash bags full of trash and even found stuff that could not fit in the trash bags including a 10 foot pole. The Sandy Creek High School Key Club worked to clean up the world around us one clean up day at a time. The club frequently partners with Rivers Alive for clean ups, and tries to participate in at least one around this time of the year.

I know that a lot of Key Clubber claim to have the best Kiwanis supporting their club, but my Kiwanis is amazing. My Kiwanis is helping my home club of Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School, by getting more involved in our service proj-ects and helping recognize outstanding members. Our Kiwanis has also helped us with funding for our service projects and our convention attendances. Our Kiwanis has presenting our new members with their Key Club pins. The Kiwanis is excited to meet the new members, some of which they will be working with for the next four years, and talk to the officers about their plans to increase membership in both the Kiwanis and Key Club. The Kiwanis is also planning to help us attend more district events and get us more involved as a club in district events. Our members are also making an effort to increase our presence in Kiwanis, by planning to attend Kiwanis meetings on a regular basis, which we have not been able to do in a few years. I can’t wait to see how both our Kiwanis and Key Club can grow together this year.

Division 3Rodeo Roundup

By: Sara-Ashley Butler Bainbridge High School Key Club partners with the local John Johnson Elementary School to bring lots of fun festivities to Kindergarten children. The Elementary school took their recreation and PE time to let the kids have a fall festival and the Bainbridge Key Club helped man the booths .Bainbridge High School Key Club partners with Elementary schools(k-4) and Hutto Middle School (5-6) to provide one on one men-toring. Each Friday morning at 7:15 A.M. BHS Key Club meets at one of the Elementary schools. On each Wednesday, Key club students have lunch with a student at the middle school. The BHS Key Club members develop a one on one relationship with younger at risk students and act as a Big Brother/Sister…The Rodeo Roundup Fall Festival attended on Friday was one of the elementary school carnivals in which our Key Club members volunteer to interact with some of these same students.

Tift County High School

Tift County High School Key Club has been extensively active in the Tifton/ Tift County Com-munity. Our most recent community service project conducted was our monthly “Adopt A Mile” trash pickup which is a trash and foreign debris pickup along a mile of both sides of a highway road. Tift County High School’s Key Club aims to keep our community clean and beautiful through our partici-pation in this vital event. Many TCHS Key Club-bers arrived on scene of the event eager and happy to offer up there services to the community. With over 8 trash-bags of debris filled to the brim it can be said that this months “Adopt A Mile” was very successful and beneficial to the community and the environ-ment as well. In addition to our “Adopt A Mile” the Tift County High School has been diligently fundraising money for the UNICEF project. Each and every one of our Key Clubbers for the past 2(+) months have been carrying around those little orange boxes and depositing spare change into them. We all know it is for a wonder-ful cause and feel great about what the money is going towards. Along with our events the TCHS Key Clubbers par-ticipated in National Key Club week; everyone showed great spirit, and the mission of Key Club was greatly spread throughout the High School halls. Goodie bags were made for all of our wonderful teachers and proceeded to then be hand delivered by fellow Key Clubbers. It was our pleasure to show our appreciation for all the hard work they do for us each and every day. As our Key Club grows and develops we are striving for more and more ways to provide a help-ing hand in community by willingly volunteering our time to make a positive change in people’s lives. Tift County High School Key Clubbers recently participated in Tift County’s 11th

annual Carnival of Knowledge. The Carnival of Knowledge fundraises much necessary funds for Tift County’s literacy Volunteers. It warmed all of us Tift County Key Club-bers hearts to see such a wonderfully large amount of people turnout at the Carnival and show their much appreciated support. The event consisted of a quiz bowl type competition. Over 20 three man teams went face to face to raise money for a great and beneficial cause. The Tift county Key Club was one of the participating teams. Our Key Clubbers made it through two very competitive rounds. The marvelous event was not just a fundraiser but an eye opening event that opened our eyes to the value and fun of education. That is what makes this event so important. I think it is safe to say that all of us Tift County Key Clubbers are proud to say that we helped contribute to the valuable Literacy Volunteers who work diligently to broaden the education of anyone willing to

learn. It is local events like the Carnival of Knowledge that the Tift County High School Key Club strives to actively volunteer our times and services to in order to help better the community for everyone.

Director of Special Activities Steve Shin Hey Key Clubbers, this is your Director of Special Activities (DOSA) Steve Shin! District Convention, starting on February 28, is getting increasingly closer, and I want to once again recommend you to join us there. While my committee and I are trying to give you guys the best District Convention on paper, attendance plays the largest role in its turnout. Simply said, District Convention will not be nearly as exciting as it could be if you guys don’t show; in its core, a great part of Key Club is meeting new people right? Now that it is November, Key Club is well in action, and in accordance, many District events are coming up. Apart from Kiwanis Family day, Georgia District Rally (GDR) is just around the corner. Georgia District Rally will be a great way to meet new people, and find the resolve to finish the year off strong. In addition, you will be introduced the candidates for next year’s Executive Board. I hope I can personally meet you all, and I truly wish I can provide you guys with a great string of District events. School is now well into the year and you guys must be stressed – I sure am. But I hope you guys are man-aging things well. In final words, I want to say: Keep your head up, and don’t forget to show your K!

Speaking of Committees...

District Projects Chair Elaine Clapp Hello Key Clubbers! Almost half of the school year is over! The fall and winter seasons are great times for giving and serving. I hope all of you have been using this school year to serve your homes, schools, and communities. As of this month, we have raised almost five thousand dollars to donate to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes! Although we have accomplished raising this amount, we must continue on fund raising through-out the school year. The District Projects Committee has been working very hard to let you Key Clubbers know more information about the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes and what you can do to help out! In the next couple of weeks, each club will receive a newsletter directly from the District Projects Committee. In the newsletter, there will be a list of fundraising ideas for your club to do, information about the Youth Homes, and the different ways to donate. I encourage you to use these fundraising ideas to your advantage. The ideas included in the newsletter are great, fun ways to col-lect money for a wonderful cause! As a reminder, do not forget that the club goal for the Youth Homes is $400! Also, the District Projects Committee has been looking at ways to contact local Kiwanis Clubs for support for the Youth Homes. Do not be afraid to ask your local Kiwanis Club to help financially in supporting this organization. Lastly, I hope you continue to work hard in serving as this year comes to an end!
