GA's Petroleum Program and Acreage Release Process
Our Role:
Attract exploration investment to Australia by building a prospectus of energy resource potential
Exploring for the Future
• A major new
investment initiative in
pre-competitive
geoscience from the
Australian Government
(Minister for Resources
and Northern Australia)
• Federal Budget
measure of $100.5
million over 4 years
(2016 to 2020)
• Comprises three
integrated elements: • Energy
• Minerals
• Groundwater
© Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia) 2018
• GA is also undertaking a major pre-competitive program across northern Australia
• Energy related data acquisition includes new seismic
data and stratigraphic drilling in:
• McArthur and related basins of Proterozoic
and old Paleozoic age (e.g. South Nicholson)
• Kidson sub-basin of the Canning Basin

Roebuck and Beagle Triassic Study
• Improved understanding of the nature and distribution of Triassic and older source rocks based on a new integrated study of sequence stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, geochemistry and seismic mapping
• Possible identification of new petroleum systems
• Delivery of new source rock data (web-based and GIS supported)
Browse Basin Petroleum Study
• Improved understanding of the hydrocarbon composition to determine gas/liquid potential

• Large resource base of natural
gas and condensate
• Condensate and LNG
production about to commence
(Ichthys, Prelude)
• Acreage located in highly
prospective Caswell Sub-basin
• Geoscience Australia’s new
study highlights distribution of
petroleum systems and
confirms hydrocarbon potential

• All source rocks in the Caswell
Sub-basin are sufficiently mature to
generate hydrocarbons
• Main source–reservoir lithologies
are hosted by Plover and Vulcan
formations (Lower - Middle Jurassic;
Upper Jurassic - Lower Cretaceous)
• Majority of expulsion occurring from
Late Cretaceous to present
• Gas-prone source rocks are
dominant, but liquids (light oil) can
accumulate in low pressure
reservoirs
• Caswell-1 recorded oil and gas
shows, located in W18-3.

Roebuck and Beagle Triassic Study
• Regional tectonostratigraphic and source rock studies of the Triassic interval
• Work in progress with interesting new insights into the structural architecture
GA's Petroleum Program and Acreage Release Process
Northern Carnarvon Basin
W18-4, W18-5:
Beagle Sub-basin Closing 21 March 2019
W18-9: Exmouth Plateau Closing 18 October 2018
Two large release areas on offer
GA's Petroleum Program and Acreage Release Process
Beagle Sub-basin: W18-4 and W18-5 (closing 21 March 2019)
• Under-explored part of the
Northern Carnarvon Basin
• 9 wells drilled between 1971 and
2007
• Nebo-1 oil discovery in Jurassic
(Oxfordian, Calypso Fm)
• Geochemical affinities with
Exeter/Mutineer in Dampier
Sub-basin
• New exploration phase stimulated
by recent discoveries in
neighbouring Bedout Sub-basin
• Renewed interest in the Triassic
Petroleum system which is
emerging as likely new play
fairway
GA's Petroleum Program and Acreage Release Process
• Existing public structural
elements maps are outdated
• A renewed interest in Triassic
Petroleum systems in this part
of the North West Shelf is a
driver to update the regional
understanding of basin
architecture and structural
elements
• Extensive regional 3D seismic
coverage is enabling significant
improvements to our structural
understanding
• GA also working with select
multi-client seismic data to
maximise what we can bring to
the regional understanding
Roebuck Basin – Regional tectonostratigraphy
GA's Petroleum Program and Acreage Release Process
Roebuck Basin – Regional tectonostratigraphy • Regional 2D and 3D seismic interpretation to provide an update of basin architecture
and Triassic stratigraphy
• Of great interest after recent discoveries a Phoenix South – 1, 2 and Roc – 1, 2
• Using key wells that have intersected Triassic stratigraphy
• Mapping five key surfaces regionally:
• TR10 SB, TR17 SB, TR21 TS, TR30 TS and the J10 SB
• Have approval to include some multi-client data

• Triassic reefs are also widespread in the outer Carnarvon Basin
