Dear Breeders, Partners and Brown Swiss Enthusiasts around the world,

we are glad to present you our new catalogue of the best German Brown Swiss sires with their proofs from the latest Interbull run in December 2011.

Within the past year the introduction of genomic proofs for Holsteins, Fleckvieh and some other breeds was one of the major items in cattle breeding. Genomic selection will become for sure a very important tool for all modern breeding programs. Also in the Brown Swiss breed we received our rst genomic breeding values in the latest Interbull run from December 2011, thus the rst genomic bull are integrated in this Top Sire catalogue. But independent of the proper implementation of genomics proofs into the breeding programs we have to consider the most important requirement of the majority of the dairy farmers world-wide:

RELIABILITY

Young bulls will be more reliable as in the past using genomics and the genetic progress will be improved. However we shall not forget on the other hand that the commercial dairy far-mers need A.I. bulls with reliable gures in all important performance, type and tness traits to produce the pro table and uncomplicated cow which ts everywhere. This kind of serious selection will stay our main target so that also in future you can be sure to rely on the best German Brown Swiss genetics, no matter if you take genomic sires, proven sires or bulls which already have second crop results like Huray our new leader.

Moreover we will continue in Germany to make a second type scoring for the o spring of the most important sires in the third lactation to get even more information which bulls sires the longlasting and therefore most pro table cows.

The well balanced conformation and strong feet & legs are the basis for the excellent durability of the Brown Swiss cow. In the past 10 years the average lifetime production of the German Brown Swiss cows increased from 21,000 to almost 26,000 kg milk. Statistics from Bavaria indicate that Brown Swiss have a remarkable higher lifetime production in comparison to all other dairy breeds in the same area. In combination with a high share of roughage intake Brown Swiss can refer to the lowest production cost per kg milk in the statistics. The at lactation curve avoids extreme production peaks in which the energy in-take can’t cover the demand. This is the reason for a stable metabolism of the Brown Swiss cows which nally leads to the big plus of the German Brown Swiss:

LONGEVITY

In Germany Brown Swiss cows almost complete one lactation more than the average of all dairy cows and no other breed has such a high average lifetime production and such a high rate of 100.000 l cows.

The Eco-index-list pays special attention to this ability of the Brown Swiss to sire easy handling, longlasting cows: Major constitution traits such as persistency, performance increase in further lactations, fertility, calving ease and longevity have a higher emphasis in the Eco index. Actual top bulls in this special list are Jubev, Prossli, Etpat (M*), Huray, Prejula and Juleng.

ADAPTATION

Due to the natural conditions in the Alps, the origin of the Brown Swiss, with a wide range in its climate and a di cult surface of the landscape in which the young cattle have to walk long distances, the Brown Swiss have excellent ad-aptation qualities. Due to the rearing system in the mountain area Brown Swiss start with moderate performances after the rst calving but keep the yield very well over the whole lactation and have the capability to grow steadily with every following lactation which keeps the cow healthy and tough. These qualities of the German Brown Swiss are well con rmed under various conditions all over the world.

Average age at leaving (Germany, ADR 2011): All dairy cows: 5.4 years Brown Swiss: 6.4 years

Looking at the absolute gures you have to consider that about 80% of the German Brown Swiss cows are kept under semi-intensive conditions in the lower and upper mountain areas of the Alps!

Ideal choice for CROSSBREEDING

The sum of the positive characteristics has lead to a steadily rising num-ber of farms using German Brown Swiss sires in crossbreeding with other dairy breeds. The F1-generation shows an extraordinary vitality, levels up the protein content in the milk and gives easy handling cows. In the second crossbred generation the type comes closer to the pure-bred Brown Swiss type. In the table of contents on page 4 we have listed some recommendations which bulls should suit best for the di erent crossbred systems and generations in combination with Holsteins, red breeds and Jersey.

E ective BREEDING PROGRAMGermany’s breeding program is the largest in the world for Brown Swiss. Al-most 171,300 Brown Swiss cows are under milk recording in Germany and the A.I. studs Greifenberg, Memmingen and Herbertingen test about 125 Brown Swiss bulls annually (page 14). Several young sires are co-tested in other countries to get comparable results in di erent environments. The bull dams are selected very carefully. In 2010 the average production of the bull dams in 2nd or further lactations was more than 9,915 kg milk with 4.27% fat and 3.71% protein. Young heifers of the next generation who pro-mise an advanced genetic progress are selected as well as older cows which have de nitely proven their qualities over the years.

Best genetics from all over the world are used under the special emphasis to keep the balance of performance, type and tness (components of the total merit index - page 15).

VARIATION of BLOODLINES

plays another important role in the German breeding philoso-phy. By the use of various alternative bloodlines it was possible to keep the inbreeding coe cient of the German Brown Swiss population on a moderate level in the past decade in spite of the strong progress which was achieved at the same time. The 46 bulls presented in the catalogue have 27 di erent sires. Rare pedigrees are always an essential part of the breeding program.

We hope that the present collection of our German Brown Swiss top sires will nd your interest and are certainly convinced that they will help to increase the pro tability in your herd and to ma-nage the challenges of tomorrow!

Finally we would like to announce that the European Brown Swiss conference will be held in Germany in 2014. All interested people are kindly invited to come and visit Germany and get more detailed information about the German Brown Swiss population located in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.

PL = lifetime production in kg milk till January 2012.

The ecological index (Eco-index) is a total merit index, which summarizes all available ancestry and performance information of a bull. It is a useful tool to select suitable bulls for organic farming, since a particular emphasis is placed on longevity, persistence and further improvement of performance in each lactation. At least 20 daughters in the third lactation are necessary for a bull to be listed after eco-index. Depending on the importance for performance, animal health and longevity, di erent weights are used for the calculation of the index. For further information on the eco-Index and its calculation, visit our homepage www.spermex.de or contact us [email protected]!

Furthermore we have included a table giving an overview about the suitability of each bull for the use in crossbreeding with di erent breeds: HF = Holstein, RB = Red Breeds, J = Jersey F1 = rst crossbreed generation; F2 = second crossbreed generation; F3 = third crossbreed generation

In the past year HURAY con rmed his outstanding allround qualities excellently with his second crop daughters. After receiving the rst results from the second crop Huray’s proofs went up three times. Al-most 2.500 daughters were included in the gures of the latest Interbull run in December 2011. Now Huray reached what he could never realize in the test period: he became the # 1 of the daughter proven bulls! Also in other countries the feedback concerning the milking Huray-daughters is excellent. A strong will for milking is combined with an excellent persistency during the lactation and a remarkable development in 2nd and 3rd lactations. Currently 214 Huray-daughters are scored. They show a good frame with su cient dairy character after calving, but also with a positive development in the strength and the depth of the rump in the later part of the lactation. Strong pasterns and high foot angles qualify the Huray‘s as easy walking, functional cows for modern barns as well as for grazing systems. The rumps are long but a bit too sloped which should be taken into consideration for the mating. Well attached fore and rear udders keep the udders on a su cient level in spite of the high performances. All tness traits are average or better which underlines that the Huray‘s are able to stand the enormous yield without any health problems. Tracing back the pedigree of Huray you will see that this combination of excellent performance and tness can be found in the whole family. Dam Laura produced an average of 12.766 kg milk in 5,4 lactations and grand dam Lolina almost reached a lifetime performance of 100.000 l with an average of more than 10.000 l. Huray can be recommended in purebreeding as well as in all crossbreeding systems on other dairy breeds like Hol-steins, Jersey and red breeds. The easy born calves show an extraordinary vitality and growth capacity!

The rst second crop-daughters of PROSSLI con rmed very well the breeding pattern from his test period. Now there are results of 267 daughters included in his latest proof from December 2011. Also in Austria, the Nether-lands and in Australia where Prossli was co-sampled, his daughters show exactly the same tendencies as in Germany. In the Netherlands he is actually #6 in the national Brown Swiss top list with an NVI of 147. Almost all Prossli-daughters in the Netherlands are crossbred animals which underlines the excellent qualities as ideal crossbred partner especially in combination with Holsteins. His daughters are medium sized with a lot of dairyness. They could have had a bit more strength in the chest. But the group at the fair EuroTier in Hannover in 2008 demonstrated that they have the potential to grow further and develop well during the rst lactation. This is also the same observation with the crossbreds in the Netherlands. The backline could be stronger but the feet&legs are impressive: Very dry hocks and strong pas-terns combined with high enough foot angles and a very good locomotion. With those qualities Prossli-daughters can be used in various barn and grazing systems. The udders of the Prossli’s are small with a nice texture. The fore udder attachment is the weaker point of the udder composite but the rear udder attachment, the central li-gament as well as the correct teat placement and length are strong bene ts of Prossli. A su cient milk perfor-mance is combined with high protein percentages and positive tness gures. With a productive lifetime index of 129 Prossli can be considered as our longevity-star. This proves his qualities to sire very functional, pro table and longlasting cows for all environments. Due to the easy calvings we can recommend him for heifer inseminations.

No other Brown Swiss bull was so popular in 2011 as PAYSSLI, who is still the German top type scorer with a nal scoring of 135 and an extremely balanced line-ar description. Already at the national German show in Buchloe in spring 2010 he attracted a lot of attention with his consistent daughter group. But also afterwards Payssli impressed with an excellent farm visiting tour in summer and a progeny group at a local show in the fall and as well at EuroTier in Hannover in November 2010. The cows demonstrated a good development during the lactation and an impeccable udder quality. The Ger-man results are well con rmed by his daughters in Aus-tria and Switzerland. Meanwhile the second lactations are nished and the Payssli-daughters seem to have the potential to last very long. Payssli combines su cient milk & protein potential with a lot of style, correct legs and lovely udders. Besides he is positive in all tness traits: Low somatic cell counts are combined with a good milking speed and as well persistency and stay-bility rate are high above average. The maternal calving ease index of 118 is actually the best of all German bulls and probably caused by the long, wide and well sloped rumps of the Payssli-daughters. Further on they are in calf again soon after calving which is proven by his ferti-lity index of 112. The combination of performance, type and tness is very well appreciated by the owners of the Payssli-daughters. We recommend Payssli for all pure-breeding and all crossbreeding systems. In spite of the paternal calving ease index of 97 the reasonable calving ease gures from 73 heifer calvings allow Payssli to be used for heifer inseminations.

PAYOUT follows the footsteps of his dam Dana and the whole cow family behind. Dana was a high yielding and long lasting cow, which never caused any trouble. She produced more than 110.000 l milk in her lifetime with 9,024 kg average per lactation and 4.42% fat and 3.81% protein. Etpat and Jupaz, two half-brothers of Payout were very popular bulls in Germany and several other countries and sired trouble-free, reliable cows. Also Payout’s daughters are functional, easy handling cows with an excellent fertility. They start with su cient performance in the rst lactation and develop well in the second lactation. Slightly negative fat percentages are combined with positive protein content. The linear description of the 54 scored Payout-daughters looks quite balanced with no failures in any single trait. Only the rump angle should be considered carefully. The medium sized Payout-o spring show a good locomo-tion with strong pasterns. The udders are well attached with su cient rear udder width and height. The teats are a bit longer than average and well placed. Further on the Payout-daughters have a good resistance against mastitis. Meanwhile there are more than 1,000 calvings from heifers which indicate than Payout can be also used for heifer inseminations. Payout can be recommended in purebred as well as in crossbred systems with his allround qualities. In several breeding programs payout was used as sire of sons.

Due to his excellent allround qualities JULENG belon-ged to the most popular German Brown Swiss sires in the past years. He kept his proofs on a very stable level which was basically caused by a very good develop-ment from rst to second and third lactations. High milk performances are combined with neutral components. This potential is well xed in the cow family behind Ju-leng: Dam Playboy-Heriett (> 50.000 l lifetime with 3,8% protein) and grand dam Tradition-Henriett (> 60.000 l lifetime production with 3,7% protein) were both high performing cows. In May 2009 we had the opportuni-ty to inspect 7 daughters of Juleng in rst and second lactations which showed an outstanding uniformity: A lot of frame and an enormous strength in the forehand without loosing dairy type was the general impression. Backline and rear leg set were correct, only the hocks could have been clearer. The fore udders were long and well attached and the udders showed a good texture. The teats tended to be a bit longer than average. The owners were very satis ed with the Juleng-daughters and their excellent milking speed and character. Juleng can be highly recommended for heifer inseminations but also his daughters show very easy calvings. So Ju-leng belongs to the few bulls who are able to combine these contrary traits positively. Another bene t which has to be mentioned is the beef performance of the Juleng-sons. Whenever beef is not the most important trait in the Brown Swiss breed the higher income from the male calves is welcome and it also underlines that Juleng sires substance and robustness. Actually we get the rst second crop Juleng-daughters milking so that more results can be expected during the year 2012.

GENOMICSGENOMICS

Genomic breeding value estimation introduced for German Brown Swiss!

Dear partners, breeders and Brown Swiss friends,

the publishing of the rst o cial genomic breeding values for Brown Swiss in Germany and Austria in December 2011 was expected with a lot of excitement. In the following we would like to give you a brief introduction into the theme of the genomic breeding value estimation and how to interpret the proofs and to select the bulls properly.

The technology of the genomic breeding value estimation can be considered as a real new milestone in the history of animal breeding. For the rst time it is possible to evaluate the genetic transmission of a bull directly by help of the identi cation of about 54.000 SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) in the DNA. Actually a training sample of more than 4.000 Brown Swiss bulls and the high quality and accuracy of the underlying recording system for the conventional breeding value estimation in Germany deliver high reliabilities. The present model to calculate the genomic breeding values has been approved recently by the responsible authority ICAR.

In comparison to the conventional system when young sires had a reliability of about 36-40% calculated with their pedigree-index, young bulls obtain now genomic breeding values with a reliability of about 64-68% in the total me-rit index (GZW). Not only performance and type proofs reach higher reliabilities but especially several tness traits.

In addition to the direct genomic e ect the pedigree information is used further on. Therefore the published proof is the optimized genomic breeding value. The optimized genomic total merit index is expressed as gGZW. You will also nd this term on the pages of the progeny tested bulls as the genomic breeding value is included in their proofs as well.

The decision for every single breeder to use daughter proven and/or young bulls with genomic proofs depends on the individual breeding goals. Those who prefer to use genetics with high reliabilities and detailed daughter information should continue to concentrate on progeny tested bulls whereas breeders who predominantly want to shorten the genetic interval may give preference to young bulls with genomic proofs only. Independent from your individual targets we would like to give you the best choice of bulls with the highest reliabilities which are possible to reach within the di erent genetic instruments.

While selecting young bulls with genomic breeding values you should spread the choice of bulls from di erent bloodlines and prefer those sires with the highest values in the traits which should be especially improved. Please take into consideration that the proofs can still vary remarkably when the rst daughter information will be obtai-ned. Therefore you should make a careful selection in the beginning and collect some experiences in the coming estimations how bulls develop who receive rst daughter proofs from the progeny test.

In our genomic selection on the following pages you will nd bulls from di erent age-classes. If you are comparing all these bulls, you should keep in mind that younger bulls have higher average proofs, due to the genetic progress.

Genomic breeding value estimation o ers the possibility to choose from a wide variation of di erent bloodlines. Best o spring from so called outcross sires can be selected much more e ciently as before with the conventional progeny testing system. Pro t from this advantage and spread your selection using di erent bloodlines on the father and the mother line. This will give you a good base for the future and avoids inbreeding problems like they exist in other important breeds.

Page 27: German Brown Swiss Top Sires 2012

27

In the present catalogue we have only chosen the best sons of exciting sires. The 14 genomic bulls on the following pages have 8 di erent sires and 7 di erent dam sires.

After every Interbull run we will update our recommendation list of young genomic bulls to give you always access to the best German Brown Swiss genetics. Please contact us for any question you have concerning genomic breeding value estimation and of course for any recommendation you need in cattle breeding generally.
