Dear Breeders, Partners and Brown Swiss Enthusiasts around the world,

we are glad to present you our new catalogue of the best German Brown Swiss sires with their proofs from the latest Interbull run in December 2013.

Two years ago the first official genomic breeding values for German Brown Swiss were published and we have sampled a lot of experience with the use of young bulls with genomic proofs and your demands during the past months. Genomic selection has become for sure a very important tool for all modern breeding programs. Further information concerning genomic selection on page 26-37.

RELIABILITY

Young bulls will be more reliable as in the past using genomics and the genetic progress will be improved. However we shall not forget that the commercial dairy farmers need A.I. bulls with reliable figures in all important performance, type and fitness traits to produce the profitable and uncomplicated cow, which fits everywhere. This kind of serious selection will stay our main target so that also in future you can be sure to rely on the best German Brown Swiss genetics, no matter if you take genomic sires, proven sires or bulls which already have second crop results like internationally respected bulls such as Huray, Payssli, Juleng, Prossli, Jusuv and some others.

Moreover we will continue in Germany to make a second type scoring for the offspring of the most important sires in the third lactation to get even more information which bulls sire the longlasting and therefore most profitable cows.

The well balanced conformation and strong feet & legs are the basis for the excellent durability of the Brown Swiss cow. In the past 10 years the average lifetime production of the German Brown Swiss cows increased from 21,000 to almost 26,000 kg milk. Statistic evaluations from Bavaria indicate that Brown Swiss have a remarkable higher lifetime produc-tion in comparison to all other dairy breeds in the same area. In combination with a high share of roughage intake Brown Swiss can refer to the lowest production cost per kg milk in the statistics. The flat lactation curve avoids extreme production peaks in which the energy intake can’t cover the demand. This is the reason for a stable metabolism of the Brown Swiss cows which finally leads to the big plus of the German Brown Swiss:

ADAPTATION

The Brown Swiss breed descends from cattle used in the valleys and mountain slopes in the Alps. It was here that the transmitting ability of certain breed cha-racteristics became so firmly established that they mark it to this day. Part of the reasons for their excellent adaption qualities is that on the one hand they have to cope in this region with a wide range of climates. On the other hand the young cattle have to walk long distances in this region which is characterized by difficult surfaces of the landscape. Due to the rearing system in the mountain area, Brown Swiss start with moderate performances after the first calving, but keep the yield very well over the whole lactation. Brown Swiss in Costa Rica

VIDEV - Evita lifetime performance: 149,974kg milk - 11,769kg fat + protein

2

In Germany Brown Swiss cows almost complete one lactation more than the average of all dairy cows and no other breed has such a high average lifetime production and such a high rate of 100.000 l cows.

Average age at leaving (Germany, ADR 2013): All dairy cows: 5.3 years Brown Swiss: 6.3 years

LONGEVITY

The Eco-index-list pays special attention to this ability of the Brown Swiss to sire easy handling, longlasting cows: Major constitution traits such as persistency, performance increase in further lactations, fertility, calving ease and longevity have a higher emphasis in the Eco index.

Page 3: SPERMEX German Brown Swiss 2014

Performance data 2012 (Germany, ADR 2013):169,046 milk recording cows: 7,126 kg milk 4.23% fat 301 kg fat 3.58% protein 255 kg protein139,614 herdbook cows: 7,306 kg milk 4.22% fat 309 kg fat 3.58% protein 262 kg protein

Looking at the absolute figures you have to consider that about 80% of the German Brown Swiss cows are kept under semi-intensive conditions in the lower and upper mountain areas of the Alps!

Ideal choice for CROSSBREEDING

The sum of the positive characteristics has lead to a steadily rising num-ber of farms using German Brown Swiss sires in crossbreeding with other dairy breeds. The F1-generation shows an extraordinary vitality, levels up the protein content in the milk and gives easy handling cows. In the second crossbred generation the type comes closer to the pure-bred Brown Swiss type. In the table of contents on page 4 we have listed some recommendations which bulls should suit best for the different crossbred systems and generations in combination with Holsteins, red breeds and Jersey.

Effective BREEDING PROGRAM

Germany’s breeding program is the largest in the world for Brown Swiss. Almost 170,000 Brown Swiss cows are under milk recording in Germany and the A.I. studs Greifenberg, Memmingen and Herbertingen test about 125 Brown Swiss bulls annually. Several young sires are co-tested in other countries to get comparable results in different environments. The bull dams are selected very carefully. Young heifers of the next generation who promise an advanced genetic progress are selected as well as older cows which have definitely proven their qualities over the years. Best genetics from all over the world are used under the special emphasis to keep the ba-lance of performance, type and fitness (components of the total merit index / S.39)

VARIATION of BLOODLINES

plays another important role in the German breeding philoso-phy. By the use of various alternative bloodlines it was possible to keep the inbreeding coefficient of the German Brown Swiss population on a moderate level in the past decade in spite of the strong progress which was achieved at the same time. The 66 bulls presented in the catalogue have 39 different sires and 31 different grandsires. Rare pedigrees are always an essential part of the breeding program.

We hope that the present collection of our German Brown Swiss top sires will find your interest and we are sure, that they will help you to increase the profitability in your herd and to manage the challenges of tomorrow!

aAa-Code: at publishing date of the catalogue not all bulls were encoded, you can find the missing aAa-codes on our homepage as soon as they are available. The next analysis will be in February 2014.

The ecological index (Eco-index) is a total merit index, which summarizes all available ancestry and performance information of a bull. It is a useful tool to select suitable bulls for organic farming, since a particular emphasis is laid on longevity, persistency and further improvement of milk performance in each lactation. Depending on the importance for performance, animal health and longevity, different weights are used for the calculation of the index.

For further information on the Eco-Index and its calculation, visit our homepage www.spermex.de or contact us [email protected]!

Furthermore we have included a table giving an overview of the suitability of each bull for the use in crossbreeding with different breeds: HF = Holstein, RB = Red Breeds, J = Jersey F1 = first crossbreed generation; F2 = second crossbreed generation; F3 = third crossbreed generation

In the past years probably no other Brown Swiss bull in the world attracted so much attention with his second crop daughters as HURAY. Meanwhile he has daughters milking in all important Brown Swiss populations. In Germany his proof is already based on the results of more than 10.000 daughters and he has always taken the 1st or 2nd position in the top list since 2011. In the recent Interbull run December 2013 he also leaded the top lists in Swit-zerland and Italy. In the US he is #3 of the current PTI-top list. Huray sires a quite uniform offspring. With numerous foreign groups we were able to convince ourselves about the outstanding qualities of Huray in the German farms: High yielding cows walking on excellent feet in all produc-tion systems. The udders are well attached and healthy and in spite of the high production the Huray-daughters get pregnant soon again. Due to his easy calving results Huray can be recommended for heifer inseminations. The quality to produce long lasting profitable cows can be traced back in Huray’s pedigree: Dam Laura produced an average of 12.766 kg milk in 5,4 lactations and grand dam Lolina almost reached a lifetime performance of 100.000 l with an average of more than 10.000 l. On several shows world-wide Huray underlined that he is also capable to sire show champions. Last September Huray could celebrate his 11th birthday but still nowadays he looks quite fresh and robust. However due to the enormous international demand he is not able to cover all semen orders at the mo-ment. We hope that Huray stays healthy and will be able to sire many more highly profitable cows for your herd. In the past Interbull run we have received the first Huray-sons with progeny proofs. Hacker and Hardrock are actually the most promising Huray-sons with daughters milking and we are sure that several more will follow the footsteps of their outstanding father.

JOSCHKA is a complete allround sire. With his German pedigree Jufast x Nofak x Hussli x Vinos he offers blood-line alternatives for all purebred Brown Swiss populations in the world. Additionally with his well-balanced traits in performance, type and functional proofs he represents an excellent choice for crossbreding systems. The mating combination Jufast x Nofak may surprises on the first view, as it lays strong emphasis on fitness qualities but may lack performance and type. Nofak- Ribana is not only a fertile long lasting cow, but also a very strong performer. 8 calvings in 7,8 years, with an average production of 10.065 kg milk, 3,79% fat and 3,74% protein underline these outstanding qualities. She is a very tough dominant cow in the herd and a real survivor.

During the past year Joschka has kept his proofs on a high level. Fat and protein percentage seem to be increased remarkably in second lactations. With a SCC index of 123 Joschka belongs to the leading bulls against mastitis.

Joschka-daughters are medium framed, correct cows with healthy udders and no weakness, but also no special high-lights: Easy handling cows which perform and don’t make any trouble – invisible cows! This is what every dairy pro-ducer looks for. You can’t expect Joschka to be the father of the show winners of tomorrow, but what you can count on is to acchieve highly profitable, easy handling cows. Since last summer Joschka is also available with sexed semen. In spite of his average calving ease index the abso-lute calving figures indicate Joschka as an easy calving bull who can be recommended for heifer inseminations.

HEGALL - daughter Belinda

HEGALL - daughter Tagine

HEGALL was already used a lot as genomic young sire and he confirmed his high index figures in the past two estimations, when his daughters started milking in 2013. Meanwhile the first lactations are completed and despite of the slightly negative persistency index, it seems that the persistency during the lactation is much better as from Hegall’s father Husjet. Hegall is currently the only progeny tested Brown Swiss bull in the German top list, who combines more than + 1.000 kg milk with positive fat and protein percentages. He reaches a total of + 87 kg fat and protein! Fortunately the fitness traits remained on the same level as before in the genomic index. The linear type description of his daughters offers neither any weaknesses nor special high-lights, thus Hegall can be considered as a real allround sire. Therefore we recommend him for different purebred as well as crossbred systems all over the world. Hegall is a Husjet-son out of the high performing General-daughter Koral, who is still alive with an average yield of 13.354 kg milk, 4,32% fat and 3,75% protein in 5,3 years. Behind granddam Kaethe you can find Pronto and Huvic in the pedigree, two reliable milk bulls with excellent dura-bility and fitness traits. We hope that Hegall will be able to transmit these qualities as well. Due to his extremely easy calving figures Hegall is espe-cially recommended for heifer inseminations. He is availa-ble with conventional and sexed semen. The non-return rates are high above the average.

VINOLD is a late Vinozak-son out of the high performing Pronto-daughter Galaxy, who was a full sister of the allround sire Prossli. The whole cow family behind Vinold shows consistent production figures. Granddam Goldfee was the highest German index cow for a long time.

So it doesn‘t surprise that also the Vinold-daughters pre-sent a strong will for milking combined with high solids. Additionally the persistency during the lactation can be kept well. Vinold-daughters are tall and dairy, with enough body depth. The rumps are well sloped just as wide and long enough. The foot angle could be higher but the legs are correct. The udders show a bit more volume due to the high per-formances, but they are kept by a strong central ligament. The front udder attachments are long and the rear udders high and wide. The teats are ideally placed, however they are quite thin, which should be considered for the mating.

Despite the highmilk yield the Vinold-daughters get pregnant soon again. Due to his calving ease index of 89 we don’t recommend Vinold for heifer insemination, unless you decide to use sexed semen of him which is a popular alternative for several breeders. Vinold is a fertile bull with very positive non-return rates (+3%). During some farm visits last summer all owners of Vinold-daughters expressed their high satisfaction and pointed out that they will use the bull again.

While starting to produce sexed semen from PAYSSLI in summer 2012, we were aware that he would become an excellent seller of sexed semen. But the demand even exceeded all our expectations. No wonder looking at his second crop daughters now. They confirm currently all the main qualities from the test period: Early mated and well developed cows with a nice style – but nevertheless not too extreme and very balanced in the whole body conformation. Sound feet & legs are combined with a superb udder quality. Also the performance figures are convincing. Therefore it is no big surprise that the demand for Payssli has increased again in the past months and es-pecially sexed semen is quite popular. Who wouldn’t like to have more of these beautiful but also profitable cows? In Germany Payssli is still the second highest type score bull. During the past two years we have seen Payssli-daughters frequently with foreign groups. All visitors were impressed by the uniformity and excellent development from first to second and third lactations. Payssli’s can be picked in the first moment when you go through the herds. They are real eye catchers! Payssli-daughters show a sufficient perfor-mance in first lactation and strong increases in the second and third lactation with good solids. Payssli is a very fertile bull and evidently he transmits the superior fertility to his daughters. Overall the great fitness abilities of the Payssli-daughters have to be pointed out. The excellent maternal calving ease index of 116 is probably caused by the long, wide enough and well sloped rumps of the Payssli-daugh-ters. Payssli is used as sire of sons in almost all important Brown Swiss populations and also in crossbred systems. He is a highly profitable option with his allround qualities. More than 1.000 first calvings indicate that Payssli can be used for heifer inseminations.

ZARISTO is the type specialist in our present line-up. With a total score of 142 he leads the type top list. Zaristo-daughters are tall with a wide chest and deep bodies. The ideally sloped rumps are long and wide. Despite the enor-mous capacity, Zaristo-daughters show a good locomotion and walk on feet with strong pasterns and high foot angle. The high udders are perfectly attached in the front and in the rear udder and kept by a strong suspensory ligament. Also the teats show an excellent placement, only the rear teats could eventually come too close. The whole linear description almost looks perfect and using Zaristo in your herd means to get the show champions of tomorrow. The milk yield is high enough but the components, especially the fat content, have to be taken into consideration for the mating. Therefore the total merit index is limited. The excellent type qualities of Zaristo are no big surprise looking at his impressive pedigree: Zaster x Pronto-Faith x Starbuck-Fiesta combine two very successful cow fami-lies in the herd of Wendelin Barnsteiner, Marktoberdorf. Zaster was a Zeus-son out of the famous H-cow family and the maternal F-cow family got a lot of success in the German championships. Starbuck-Fiesta was a former national champion and dam of the high type bull Player. And also Faith became class champion on the national show. However both cows presented in the same way high performance figures: Fiesta completed more than 140.000 kg in her lifetime and Faith more than 60.000 kg. So we can expect good lifetime performances from Zaristo-daugh-ters. Present calving ease figures are normal. However it is too early to recommend him for heifers. All fitness traits are either neutral or slightly positive.

Genomic breeding values for German Brown Swiss

Dear partners, breeders and Brown Swiss friends,

two years ago the first official genomic breeding values for German Brown Swiss were published and during the last months we have sampled a lot of experiences with the use of young genomic bulls and your demands. The first genomic young sires like Hegall have confirmed their breeding values and further will follow soon.

In the following we would like to give you a brief introduction into the topic of the genomic breeding value estimation and how to interpret the proofs and to select the bulls properly.

The technology of genomic evaluations increases the accuracy of genetic evaluations and have the potential to rapidly increase the rate of genetic improvement in many traits. For the first time it is possible to evaluate the genetic transmis-sion of a bull directly by help of the identification of about 54.000 SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) in the DNA. Currently a training sample of more than 4.000 Brown Swiss bulls and the high quality and accuracy of the underlying recording system for the conventional breeding value estimation in Germany guarantee high reliabilities. The present model to calculate the genomic breeding values has been approved by the responsible authority ICAR.

In comparison to the former system, where young sires had a reliability of about 36-40% based on their pedigree-index, young bulls obtain now genomic breeding values with a reliability of about 64-68% in the total merit index (GZW). Not only performance and type proofs, but also especially several fitness traits reach higher reliabilities. Additionally to the direct genomic effect, the pedigree information is used further on. Therefore the published proof is the optimized genomic breeding value (gGZW). You will also find this term on the pages of the progeny tested bulls, since the genomic breeding value is included in their proofs as well.

The decision for every single breeder to use daughter proven and/or young bulls with genomic proofs depends on the individual breeding targets. Those who prefer to use genetics with high reliabilities and detailed daughter information should continue to concentrate on progeny tested bulls. Whereas breeders who predominantly want to shorten the genetic interval may give preference to young bulls with genomic proofs only.

While selecting young bulls with genomic breeding values you should spread the choice of bulls from different blood-lines and prefer those sires with the highest index in the traits, which should be especially improved. Please take into consideration, that the proofs can still vary remarkably with the first daughter information. Therefore you should make a careful selection in the beginning and collect some experiences in the coming estimations how bulls develop who receive first daughter proofs from the progeny test.

In our genomic selection on the following pages you will find bulls from different age-classes. If you are comparing all these bulls, you should keep in mind that younger bulls have higher average proofs, due to the genetic progress.

Genomic breeding value estimation offers the possibility to choose from a wide range of different bloodlines. Best offspring from so called outcross sires can be selected much more efficiently as before. Profit from this advantage and spread your selection using different bloodlines on both, the father and the mother line. This will give you a sound basis for the future and avoids inbreeding problems like in other important breeds.

Despite the extensive range of highly genetically predisposed genomic young sires, the lower security of these bulls should not fall into the background. It remains here the principle that only those who spread the bull use widely can minimize the risk associated with low reliabilities.

Further information and Brown Swiss bulls not mentioned here, as well as the steadily updated data sheets of the single bulls can be found on our website www.spermex.de or follow us on the SPERMEX Facebook page for the latest news.
