The management committee, Carien de Klerk, Elzabe Broekmann, Marleen Van Rooyen and Pam Leslie, worked hard and diligently to manage the day-to-day activities of the organisation. TEAM In 2018 we were privileged to have the services of the following dedicated staff: Five psychologists, one clinical pastorate, five registered counsellors, and one office manager.

During the year we sadly had to say goodbye to a few members of our family, including Neil and Elzabe Broekmann, who retired at the end of the year, and Pam Leslie who relocated to England. We thank all our staff for their passion and their valuable contribution to the lives of their clients.

STORIES

From one of our therapists:

*Lizzy currently lives with her mum and 2 siblings. She was sexually abused by her stepfather for two years before she had the courage to tell someone. In this instance, she was believed and her mother took swift action. When I met Lizzy, it was 2 weeks before her first court date. My mission was clear, I had my checklist of what to do and discuss with rape survivors. I knew I had to work hard on getting her to relax enough to testify in court. After spending some time with Lizzy I realised that the physical acts and the unpleasantness of the trial is not what bothered her most. What bothered her more was the lack of faith she now had in her mother’s ability to protect her. She had lost all faith in her mother, for being unaware of what was happening. We spent more sessions building and nurturing a new attachment relationship between mother and daughter than we did focusing on the trauma. After a few weeks the mother and daughter who walked into my office were changed beings. They were smiling and laughing with each other, Lizzy was speaking openly to her mother about anything and everything.

From one of our clients: “Ek is n 15 jarige seun van Groenheuwel.

Comments of visitors to the Therapeutic Garden at TC Newman, created and maintained by the Psychiatric Support Group:

OUR HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

We come to the end of 2018 with the knowledge that many people in our communities suffer emotionally. We do not give up hope because we believe that, as our therapists walk the journey with their clients, they are able to heal, and that hope is rekindled in their lives and those whose lives they share.

Thank you for journeying with us.
