MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD

GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAl is just around the corner. Each year thousands of volunteers flock to Christmas Hill Park during the last week of July to put on the best food party in the world. Together, the 4,000 volunteers do everything from the desirable pouring of beer job to the, oh so hard picking up trash job. Each year a certain amount of the fes-tival proceeds are donated back to many local charities making this event even more spectacularly successful.

But why do we volunteer? Many of the people who work at the Garlic Festival could easily write a check for the amount they will raise during their volunteer shift. Over the past two decades there has been a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones.

Recent studies on the relationship between health and volunteering show that

Volunteer — it’s good for your soulthe benefits of volunteering are not limited to the recipients of the volunteer services. Those who volunteer experience greater health benefits than those who receive the support through these activities. There is a term you may have heard of called “Helpers High” which appears to be alive and well.

Why might we see a connection between volunteer activities and longer and healthier lives? Evidence suggests that volunteering has a positive effect on social psychological factors, such as one’s sense of purpose. In turn, positive factors are correlated to better physical health. Volunteering may enhance a person’s social networks to buffer stress and reduce risk of disease.

Seems that Gilroy understands the benefits of volunteering, not only for our youth and our general population but also

for our non-profit agencies. Lucky for you, the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, who would like all if its members to have success in business and in life, has the perfect volunteer opportunity for you. You can pour beer, sell tickets or check identification at the Garlic Festival.

We are grateful to those who have already signed up to volunteer. Please know there are still opportunities to get involved. And know this, your volunteer hours will not only help the community, but will also be good for your soul!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO

Participate in the Tee Off for Youth Golf Classic

THE GILROY POLICE FOUNDATION and the Gilroy Youth Task Force have joined together to host the upcoming “Tee Off For Youth” Golf Classic. Both organizations are private, non-profit 501(c)(3)’s that work to redirect gang affiliated and at-risk youth through education, prevention and inter-vention efforts. Funds raised through the generosity of sponsors and golfers goes to support programs such as the Gilroy Youth Center (year round free programming), Gilroy Unified School District’s Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support

Archer from the George Archer Memorial Foundation for Literacy will also be on hand to meet and greet golfers and sponsors.

To help continue the work of reaching at-risk youth and providing the necessary prevention and educational programs, please participate in the Tee Off for Youth Golf Classic. Whether you play in the tournament, sponsor the event, or simply make a donation, you make a definite and immediate impact. To sponsor, donate our sign up to play, visit TeeOffForYouth.com

Program (PBIS), Late Night Gym for “at-risk” youth, the Parent Project, Anti-Bullying programs and providing a safe environment for youth.

The public is invited to participate in this upcoming event scheduled for Thursday, August 11 at the home of the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open, the beautiful CordeValle Resort in San Martin. Check in begins at 10:30 am and play begins at 1 pm. There are a limited number of spaces available.

Attending and helping at the event is professional golfer and top instructor on the Champions, PGA, LPGA and European tours, Dave Stockton. While on the PGA tour, Stockton was known for being one of the games’ best putters. He wrote a guide to putting called, “Unconscious Putting,” which was released in 2011 and quickly became a best seller. Dave will be providing a golf clinic prior to the start of our Tee Off for Youth Golf Classic. Donna

“Evidence suggests that volunteering has a positive effect on social psychological factors,
