2017 JUBILEE Honors Volunteer of the Year!

On Saturday, January 28, 2017 Jonathan’s Landing Cares celebrated 20 years! This year’s theme paid homage to the “Roaring Twenties”. The ladies were decked out in their finest flapper dresses and head pieces, while the gentlemen looked as dapper as Jay Gatsby!

Over 200 guests enjoyed the start of the evening with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while looking over the magnificent silent auction items that were on display. Moving into the dining portion of the evening, Mimi Walsh (founder of JL Cares) spoke about how the organization got started and how far we’ve come today in our Jupiter community.

As the evening rolled on, Dennis Dunn, JL Cares Chairman, announced our Volunteer of the Year award to Mrs. Cathy Maloy. Cathy was pleasantly surprised by the honor and thanked all of the members of Jonathan’s Landing Cares. In her honor, JL Cares will donate $5,000 to Friends of Foster Children which is near and dear to Cathy’s heart as one of her volunteer involvements is Guardian ad Litem, where she serves as a trained, court-appointed advocate for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected.

Our night continued with a delicious meal by Chef Joseph and his staff as well as plenty of dancing! The highlight was the flaming baked Alaska….our “Roaring Twenties” dessert of the evening! Thank you to everyone that had a part in the Jubilee festivities for your support!!

Board News After serving 6 years on the JL Cares Board, Matt Mone has stepped aside.

Matt had served as chairman and treasurer, and we will greatly miss him and his contributions to our board. Our newest member to the Board is Bernie Halligan. Bernie has already been serving on the Gifts and Grants Committee. We look forward to having Bernie be part of our organization that works with over twenty agencies and organizations in the greater Jupiter area serving those in need.

How We Make GrantsThe Gifts and Grants Committee is a very important part of Jonathan’s Landing Cares. JL Cares was originally started to encourage volunteerism by our residents with non-profit agencies and schools in the local community. However, over time, many residents turned to JLC for guidance when they wanted to donate to local charities but did not know where their money would be most useful. Additionally, JLC recognized that cash grants could compliment the volunteer hours to help worthy charities. As a result, the Gifts and Grants Committee was formed to investigate local charities and decide which ones were appropriate, both as volunteer opportunities and as recipients of grant money. The committee consists of Tom Dwyer, Frank Walsh, Noreen Louthan, Rosemary Phillips, Don Berig and Bernie Halligan.

Committee members visit new agencies requesting grant money and present recommendations to the Executive Board. Once an agency is approved for grant funds, G&G requests a “Wish List” every year and does a follow-up site visit to all agencies every two years. The G&G Committee meets about four times a year to evaluate new agencies, assign site visits for the year and then, after funds become available from the Jubilee, we decide how to distribute the funds according to the requests that the agencies have submitted. This year, we donated grants to 20 agencies.

Memorial GiftsDuring the past season, JL Cares has been the recipient of many donations made in memory of members and friends of the Jonathan’s Landing community.

JL Cares is most grateful to those who have made a memorial gift to JL Cares.

The memorial gifts are a reminder that others in need in the Jupiter community have become part of the legacy of the friends and loved ones being honored through the generosity of the donor.

Jubilee Silent Auction – This year’s Silent Auction broke records again raising $45,344 with over 180 items on display for bidding! We truly appreciate all of the local businesses that donate items and gift certificates and the JL Members that donate their vacation homes, fishing trips, boat cruises, artwork and so much more! The auction sets up on Thursday prior to the Gala and concludes during the gala. Bidding is open

to everyone. Something new this year was the “Give from the Heart” Board where attendees could make a donation to a specified agency-this opportunity raised $1,800. Thank you to

the auction committee including Linda Gilmore-Chair, Don Pray, Neil Lockie, Peggy Erdlen, Lucy Cherry, Bob Schaefer, Greg Adams, Mike Lampos, Matt & Maureen Mone and Dennis & Sharon Dunn. Thank you also to the small army that showed up early Thursday to help set up and create eye-appealing displays of all of the items. And, thank you to Stacey Stack, Susan Heher, Peggy Erdlen, and Penny Pray for helping with Checkout in the days following the gala. We welcome your future donations and would love to have you join our team!

Rebuilding Together and JL Cares beautify a local family’s home. JL Cares again partnered with Rebuilding Together of the Palm Beaches with over 25 volunteers painting the home’s exterior, cleaning up the property and providing landscape plantings. Rebuilding Together strives to preserve and revitalize houses and communities for low income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled. Thank you to all involved in making this homeowner proud and appreciative of her home’s fresh makeover.

JL Cares “Packing Day” at Forgotten Soldiers Outreach

Many thanks to the 25 volunteers that packed 100 “we care” boxes to be shipped to troops stationed overseas. We presented Lynelle Zelnar, Executive Director of FSO, with a check from JL Cares for $3,050 and 17 of our members contributed an additional $2,665 to support FSO mailings and operations. Additionally, 6 members generously contributed supplies to FSO valued at $475 to replenish items in their warehouse. The check presentation was a combination of JL Cares Board members and JL military veterans. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach was founded in 2003 and they have sent 400,000+ boxes over the years to our military stationed overseas, many in combat zones. Many soldiers self-nominate, because their families cannot afford to send them packages. Commanders have reported that it is a huge morale boost for their troops to receive a “we care” package and letters of encouragement from FSO. Supporting FSO significantly helps our troops.

Thanksgiving BasketsJL Cares is a non-profit organization where our purpose is “to encourage and coordinate volunteer involvement by our members in the Jupiter community and to raise funds for needy area causes.” At Thanksgiving, many of our members helped to fulfill our purpose by donating Thanksgiving food baskets for needy families. In 2016, we collected and distributed 89 baskets— that is 89 laundry baskets filled to the top with suggested food and a $25 gift card to Publix for a turkey. Volunteerism and helping others is an important part of the culture of the Jonathan’s Landing community. It came through “loud and clear” this past Thanksgiving.

It’s hard to believe, but each year we get more Easter baskets donated than in the past. This year we received 116 baskets from JL members and friends. All of the baskets went to the children at the Edna Runner Tutorial Center and El Sol. To see the faces on the children as they leave school with their baskets makes it all worthwhile. Thank you Jonathan’s Landing community! You DO make a difference in the lives of many children.
