Book Review
Reader, Sarah Armitage-Scott from Winterton, reviews Haunting inLincolnshire by Stephen Wade.
This book has made me want to revisit places I have been in the past…
Have you ever wondered what strange events have happened in this area? Thentake a look at Hauntings in Lincolnshire by Stephen Wade. From Normanby Hall toLincoln, paranormal activity seems to be commonplace.
If you have an interest in strange goings-on and things that go bump in the night, then this is a must read. It’s not a big book at 96 pages and is made up of shortstories – but that is no bad things as it means that it is easy to pick up wheneveryou have a spare half an hour or so.
Who would have thought that Scunthorpe would have its own ghost wonderingaround near the viaduct on Scotter Road or that Normanby Hall has a lady thatwonders round in the garden?
This book has made me want to revisit placesI have been in the past and look at them withnew eyes, and I hope this wills inspire a fewreaders to do the same, this is definitely a ‘tenout of ten 'book for me and I would certainlyread it again.
Hauntings in Lincolnshire is publishedby Halsgrove Publishing .You can buy onlinefor £8.99 at www.halsgrove.com or call 01823 653 777.

That's the message from the Lincolnshire Integrated VoluntaryEmergency Service (better known as LIVES).
The organisation is launching a recruitment campaign to ensure it cancontinue to provide this vital service.
Spokesman Stephen Hyde said: "Lincolnshire and North Lincolnshireas a whole is exceptionally furtunate to have a voluntary service likeLIVES. At the request of the ambulance service, our volunteersprovide rapid emergency care to seriously ill or injured patients andremain onscene until the emergency service arrives”.
"Our First Responders really can mean the difference between life anddeath."
LIVES volunteers respond to more than 1,500 calls a month acrossthe county helping to save many lives but it's a figure Stephen hopeswith the help of more volunteers to eventually increase. "People canapply to become members of LIVES with no prior medicalqualifications, knowledge or experience. All that is needed is awillingness to help within the community."
All volunteers receive inhouse training, a nationally recognisedemergency care qualification on basic life support and first aid skillsplus how to use an automatic external defibrillator (AED).
"It may be hard to believe but these relatively simple skills really dosave lives," said Stephen.
First Responders normally work as part of a group and choose shiftsto suit their lifestyle and commitments.
The organisation was founded in 1975 by two Lincolnshire GPs, DrCooper and Dr HarperSmith, who realised emergency serviceresponse times were hampered by the wide rural locality. The schemewas initially staffed by doctors until 1999, with the launch of the FirstResponder Scheme when it was opened to members of the public.

19Local HistoryScunthorpe soldier awarded prestigious award for gallantry
In the March issue of Glanford Advertiser wepublished an article entitled ‘A Whistle StopTour of the History of Scunthorpe’. The articlenamed a number of notable local people –and it created a good deal of interest. Severalreaders emailed to tell us about people weknew nothing about – including aScunthorpe-born World War One soldierby the name of John Cunningham.
What’s very unusual about Mr. Cunningham isthat, as a Private and aged just 19, he was awardedthe Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigiousaward for gallantry in the face of the enemy thatcan be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Battle of the Somme
Records show that Private Cunningham was born in 1897 in Swain's Yard, offManley Street in Scunthorpe. He was serving in the East Yorkshire Regiment,31st Division when on 13 November 1916, the opening day of the Battle of theAncre (the final offensive of the Battle of the Somme), attacking from oppositeHebuterne the 31st Division was to seize the German trenches and form adefensive flank north of Serre.
After the enemy’s front line had been captured, Private Cunningham went with abombing section up a communication trench where much opposition was metand all the rest of the section were either killed or wounded.
Collecting all the bombs from the casualties, Private Cunningham went on aloneand when he had used up all the bombs he had he returned for a fresh supply andagain went up the communication trench where he met a party of 10 Germans. Hesingle-handedly killed all 10 and cleared the trench up to the new line.
Mr Cunningham died in 1941, aged 43, and is buried in Hull.
Thanks for the help of the Museum in Scunthorpe in compiling this article and forsupplying the photo of Private Cunningham.
One thing that we can’t seem to find reference to is ‘Swain’s Yard’. If anyone has anyinformation on what it refers to, please email us on [email protected]
Next month we will tell you all about a Scunthorpe-born MBE…
