Energy Leaders Meet to Compare, Contrast, and CollaboratePremier Alison redford and oklahoma Governor mary fallin opened the international energy leaders forum at the Palliser yesterday with a comparison of shared challenges, opportunities and initiatives.

redford had a chance to chat quietly with fallin before their speeches, focusing on relationship building, leadership, corporate rela-tions, and finding better way to sustain the leading energy economies in their respective countries.

The premier also pointed out that Alberta has been investing in cleaner, greener forms of energy, such as wind, and alternative fuels.

“Alternative forms of energy including biomass have a place in the landscape,” she says. “our energy sector is much more sophisticated than the prairie pump jack or the oil rig. The technologies here are very ambitious.”

“We looked at what has been successful online for pro-fessional resource sharing, and we found that subscription models don’t work in business,” Gaulin concludes. “People only want to pay for what is determined to be valuable right away. That’s what we aim to deliver.”

He adds part of the initiative in the governor’s energy plan, is to get returning veterans into the workforce.“We have contingent of 4,000 soldiers coming back from Afghanistan and iraq. it’s a matter of taking their

military skill set and certifying them then finding energy industry opportunities for them. We’re also working with science, Technology, engineering and mathematics education Coalition to elevate science and technology at an early age.”

When asked what innovations he takes away from Alberta, ming heralds the province’s investment in research. “one of the things i’ve always been impressed with in Alberta is the commitment to research and development,”

he says. “you have a fairly large budget is allocated to that. if you don’t have the r&d, you can’t do what you’re doing here or what we’re doing in oklahoma.”

Unconventional Resources Still in the RunningTHe CAnAdiAn soCieTy for Unconventional resources presented its findings at the GPs on Wednesday. mike dawson, president of the organization, says there are great opportunities for higher productivity in natural and liquid natural gas production in the West despite the sagging prices, warmer climate and high reserves.

“in the past, well productivity has not been met with economic success. Today, greater production is a reflec-tion of the opportunities provided by technology. now we are creating more wellbore exposure into the reservoir, which leads to more productivity.”

With the diminishing amount of opportunities in conventional fields, companies have been forced to shift to unconventional areas to fill the gaps for stakeholder sustainability. dawson says the love affair with hydrocarbons is still strong.

“if you look at north American consumption habits, we are becoming better at becoming better at how we use energy. you will see that the amount of consumer and commercial usage for natural gas has been relatively flat. The only real growth opportunity is converting away from coal toward gas fired energy or selling to foreign markets.

He says continued growth of oil sands and tight oil are still comfortable arms of the industry, and states the natural gas market will remain challenged for some time.

“The Us plans to retire about 84 gW of electricity as plans come to an end of their life by 2020,” dawson adds. “There will be a continued growth over the mid-term. i believe that between now and 2015, were still going to have pressure on natural gas and even oil pricing, especially if companies keep switching between crude and light oil. What implications that has towards pricing, your guess is as good as mine.”

Crude Markets Get a Checkup at Platts Oil ForumTHe KeysTone And seAWAy Pipelines were hot topics of discussion during Platts oil forum in Calgary recently. richard Capuchino, chief editor, latin American Wire, said the development of Cushing is one of the biggest stories of the year.

“it’s been a real roller coaster ride,” he said, addressing a crowd of over 120 attendees at the Wes-tin Hotel. “The development of Cushing and the reversal of the seaway line are really the biggest stories and the most dramatic.”

His overview and predictions covered a variety of areas:• With U.s. President obama promoting the construction of the southern leg of the line, the

first exports from the Keystone would likely be cheaper grades of Canadian crudes. from the north part of the line, it will take three weeks to move crude from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries.

• Brent will remain the leader in pricing at a premium to WTi through to december 2018. restrictions on exports will keep it steady.

• A potential for increase in production, mostly from shale formations and bringing sweeter crude into the Gulf Coast.

• domestic output is expected to rise in the U.s. upwards of 6% due to take away capacity; as an example, Alaska two billion barrels of shale reserves ready to move, which could put some heat on Canadian exports.

• There will likely be an increase in Bakken and eagle ford shale output. light sweet crude will be kept at a minimum.

• The seaway Pipeline is predicted to produce 150,000 to 400,000 barrels per day of light sweet crude. At its height, it is anticipated to be upwards of 850,000 barrels daily.

• The biggest development will be from Cushing, oklahoma to nederland, Texas, with 700,000 barrels a day in 2013 up to 830,000 in 2015.

• Change is on the horizon with Cushing having the biggest impact in the sweet crude. After the initial rise after blowout, takeaway capacity is anticipated to lift to 1.6m barrels a day by 2015. He says this may narrow afterward with export facilities coming to play.

Water Storage Answers Frac Needs on SiteTHe neWesT ProdUCT lAUnCH in the industry for frac water storage hails from strad energy services. ecoPond is designed to answer the frac water storage needs of the oil and gas industry. engi-neered by the strad innovations Team, the company showcased the technology at the GPs this week.

“it’s one of the most exciting initiatives we have right now and a really critical area of the industry,” says Henry van der sloot, executive chairman. “The ponds are used storing the big frac water on the work sites. A lot of the water is stored in big pits and a lot of companies are trying to work on the containment and control the water.”

The units can hold from 2,000 barrels up to 40,000 barrels of water. There are two unique designs available on the market.

“one of the tanks is totally unique in terms of composition, made out of a composite proprietary resin, super light, and super strong,” says van der sloot. “it’s connected with aluminum channels that are easy to put together and extremely effective in terms of maintenance.”

The other pond is rectangular, the design of which was customer driven. many sites are limited in space, so the shape adheres to needs of work site requirements.

“These are the result of a whole suite of designs we have been working on. These designs for the ponds have taken about a year. What is important for us is to create the best and most reliable products and we operate as an innovative and environmentally responsible company.”

Van der sloot says strad ensures the install of the pond is done from walk through to completion.“We ensure everything from the ground surface coverage, satellite communications on site, and con-

tainment for fluids. We put a very heavy emphasis on environmental safety.”He adds that leak detection is imperative and was an important part of the engineering.“We’ve designed gauges and monitoring systems that can monitor exactly what the levels are and were

Power on the Move is Aggreko’s GameAGGreKo, WHiCH WAs a key sponsor at the GPs, has made its mark as a leader in temporary power, temperature control, and oil-free compressed air solutions for over 25 years.

The company can provide temporary power to uncharted areas for several months. Generators can reduce lead time to production in remote locations where utility power sources are unavailable. The customizable and scalable systems can be designed to fit site requirements. multiple source needs can quickly be dealt with by installing a centrally powered station that can serve a large geographic area.

“The type of operations where the company is operating is predominantly oil and gas in fort mcmur-ray, northern BC focusing on northern saskatchewan and in the potash near esterhazy,” states mike Kalinowski, area sales manager for Western Canada. “We’re looking forward to spread out to more Western Canadian sites. eastern Canada is an opportunity being discovered as we speak, especially in mining projects.”

The primary source fueling the equipment is diesel, and the company uses natural gas when appli-cable. He adds the switch is something that the company is strongly looking into. The company launched a 334 kW natural gas generator to the fleet recently, adding a new option for short-term power between 150 kW and 500kW. The low emission reciprocating fleet can save up to 45 per cent compared to diesel units.

Kalinowski adds the length of time for rental can range from weeks to months and client appreciate the rapid deployment capability.

“Any time we support the sites, short term may be from three weeks to three months for all stages of site work.”

Racking Water Treated on Site Saves Money, Time and NaturereCyClinG WATer for frACKinG can cut down on huge expenses, especially with technol-ogy presented at the GPs by ecosphere energy services.

A subsidiary of ecosphere Technologies, the process allows operators to both replace chemicals on the front end of a frack and then treat and re-use 100 per cent of the flowback and produced water.

Housed in a 53-foot trailer that goes from frack pad to frack pad, ecosphere`s new ozonix ef80 mobile treatment system processes up to 80 barrels of frack water per minute (four million gallons per day). The patented system cleans the water with enviro-friendly ozone, acoustic and hydrody-namic cavitation, and electro oxidation. The result is treated water with no waste stream.

Corey mcGuire, marketing director of ecosphere says the technology helps to eliminate the use of chemicals. it can also regain environmental benefits and eliminate air issues as well as the need for big trucks.

The water doesn`t go back into the environment, but can be stored into an inert product, allowing the water to be reused in operations.

Our Reciprocating Compressor Packages: (Ariel oem, dec 2010). reciprocating Compressors (recips) are ideal for all pressure ranges from low pressure VrU to high pressure injection applications (sweet or sour). reciprocating packages operate efficiently over a wide range of compression ratios and can be reconfigured by recylindering or restaging to handle new field conditions.Compass Compression has packaged reciprocating compressors from 1 to 5 stages.

Our Vane Compressor Packages: (ro-flo oem). rotary vane compressors (vanes) are ideal for low discharge pressure, high discharge dewpoint temperature, vapour recovery applications (sweet or sour).

Vanes operate at a suction pressure range of 0 – 10 psig and discharge pressure range of 20-70 psig (single stage) or 80 – 120 psig (two stage). There’s no minimum compression ratio and they can handle ratios over 5:1 (limited by process discharge temperature).

Vanes have an open loop forced lubrication system, similar to a reciprocating compressor therefore eliminating process discharge dew-point issues inherent in closed oil loop oil flooded screw packages. They’re also maintenance-friendly and worn parts can be easily replaced in the field.

New Unmanned Aerial Scout Technology Pinpoints More DetailA neW Used By THe miliTAry aerial technology is opening up the skies to more precise mapping and inspection of oil, gas and energy field sites.

UAV Geomatics, a subsidiary of Telik devel-opments inc. is an engineering company spe-cializing in geomatic mapping and inspection. Their technology, the Aeryon scout, is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The low alti-tude data gathering system provides high reso-lution aerial imagery for mapping, site surveys, and Gis data collection.

Brent Wanless, president of the private Alberta-based company, says the scout is the same technology used by the Canadian and British armed forces in Afghanistan. He says the speed and efficiency of the unit is what drew the company to invest in this breakthrough process.

“Under the right circumstances, we can get the information in one day—that makes a difference to a company’s budget,” he says. “We fly under Transport Canada regulations, obtaining a special flight operations Certificate (sfoC). it requires us to always stay within visual site of the aerial vehicle, so it is mandatory to have a ground supervisor making sure we don’t create any hazards for other low flying craft.”

He adds the scout can be deployed rapidly in all weather conditions. its unique airborne platform allows data collection system allows for specific site requirements:• Photogrammetric mapping - Production of rectified orthophoto mosaics from high resolution images for

base mapping, image classification, and planimetric mapping. Pixel resolution of 2cm gets closer to the site than any other aerial technology available.

• digital elevation model (dem) - Customized 3d terrain mapping to generate topographic data and relief imaging combined with orthophoto mosaics.

• Panoramic mapping - oblique imaging customized to application requirements.• Gis data - Collection of accurate image data to enable time series visualizations and analysis of time and

location sensitive information in a Gis environment.• environmental mapping - Biological surveys, impact analyses, remediation, and planning activities related to

regulatory compliance and permitting.• Custom mapping - mapping operations can be performed to fit specific client project requirements.• Volumetric studies - The capture of accurate data for volumetric surveys and analysis.

dimitra Katsuris, vice president, business development for UAV Geomatics, says the benefits are realized quickly; decreased human risk, increased safety, faster decision making on the ground, and lower costs compared to traditional aerial photography via plane or helicopter.

“The scout gives us the ability to hover and isolate features enabling real-time inspection monitoring,” she says. “it works well in tight areas and larger spans and provides faster turnaround. it’s applicable for buildings, roads, pipelines, flare stacks, derricks and towers as well as environmental inspections such as tailings ponds, wildlife and reclamation sites.”

Canadian Oil and Gas Industry Booming Shows Leading Salary GuideTHe CAnAdiAn oil And GAs indUsTry is booming according to the latest salary survey conducted by oil and Gas Job search and Hays oil and Gas.

The guide was compiled from over 14,000 participants in 53 countries and provides data on average salaries, day rates and benefits for 20 specific industry disciplines.

The guide highlights that Canadian based oil and gas professionals are being paid some of the highest rates in the world with an average salary of CAn$130,120 per year; 63% greater than the worldwide average of CAn$81,345.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers has forecast $20 billion investment for oil sands during 2012 with Western Canada investment at a record high of $33 billion.

sAiT PolyTeCHniC’s reAl World leArn-inG Goes 3d. With the opening of the Trades and Technology Complex in september 2012, sAiT’s macPhail school of energy (mse) is preparing for the installation of a drilling simulator, the first of its kind at a post-secondary institution in north America.

This interactive 3d simulator will give students vir-tual rig and drilling operations training in an environ-ment that is identical to what is experienced in the field.

The simulator replicates a rig driller’s control cabin, complete with cyber chair, touch screen consoles and instrument panels. surrounding the control cabin is a video monitor where the rig’s drill platform and equip-ment are reproduced multi dimensionally. simulator software is programmed with information that will affect the drilling plan according to various situations and sub-surface conditions.

“This simulator will fill the gap between theory and practice in a 3d world where students can experience a rig’s operation prior to working in the field,” says mohammad shaikh, sAiT instructor. “The more closely the simulator represents the real environment, the more successful the training and we are only just beginning to see its potential to benefit students and fit into the curriculum.”

As the student driller operates the equipment, the surface simulator provides realistic moving graphics imitating the sights and sounds the driller would experi-ence on the rig. The downhole simulator is programmed with details that affect the drilling process and translate them into visual indicators crews would normally see on gauges in a rig cabin.

While only a small number of students will run the simulator at one time, the remainder will be able to fol-low along on desk monitors and participate in specific exercises designed by their instructors.

Because sAiT’s state-of-the-art simulator realisti-cally models drilling operations, it is anticipated to provide great value to industry and will give students an edge as they are trained to become the energy leaders of tomorrow.

sAiT’ simulator is designed to help employers reduce training costs by decreasing the amount of rig downtime, increasing the productivity of the drill-ing process by having skilled operators on staff and reducing the extra mainte-nance and equipment damage sometimes caused by inexperienced operators.

While the lab won’t be fully operational until sometime in september, instructors in the various energy programs have been working with the simulator software to explore its potential.

The software mirrors the latest technology being used in the sector in Alberta and around the world and can be configured to different types of rigs, well designs and formation or reservoir characteristics.
