Sustainability and Business Schools

“Sustainability” has become a buzzword among businesses and in the popular media. What exactlyit encompasses remains a little vague. It can include everything from LEED (Leadership and Energyand Environmental Design) certified buildings to deployment of renewable energy, water harvestingto green products.

A few business schools have started full-fledged sustainability MBA programs, e.g., Bard College inUpstate New York. Business schools in several universities are testing the waters by offering shortcourses, executive training, and certificate courses on the subject. From a business school perspective,sustainability can be addressed as a part of corporate strategy. It can be viewed as positioning froma marketing approach. The curriculum can draw from environmental studies, energy management,and even architecture and civil engineering – the subject matter is truly inter-disciplinary.

Several companies now have Chief Sustainability Officer positions. What exactly does such a persondo? My view is that the function can be divided into two sets of initiatives. One, design issuesrelating to buildings and facilities, focused mostly on one-time improvements, and two, on-goingand multi-year initiatives as processes.

The US Green Building Council’s LEED program focuses on buildings and their surroundings, andimprovements in them, so that the Green House Gas (GHG) footprint of facilities is reduced, energyefficiency enhanced, air inside buildings is clean, day lighting replaces artificial lighting, water isconserved, and more. The buildings then earn ratings such as Silver, Gold or Platinum.

Many employees prefer to work in such buildings, and the companies housed in such buildings arepreferred by their customers – the buildings themselves become a competitive differentiator. Indiaalso has its own, comparable Indian Green Buildings Council (IGBC).

Beyond the design issues are on-going processes, and here there is opportunity for continuousimprovement. The energy use amount and intensity can be reduced by a variety of means, such aswaste heat recovery and efficiency measures.

In my view, the Chief Sustainability Officer’s duties thus encompass both elements of facilitiesmanagement including one time design issues, frequently the domain of architects and constructionengineers, and on-going process improvements to conserve, use more efficiently, and use in increasingamounts renewable sources of energy.

This is an evolving job definition for the Chief Sustainability Officer, yet one likely to only grow inimportance in the age of “peak oil” and increasingly “peak coal”. No doubt about it, business schools,including IIM Kozhikode, will be addressing this with greater urgency in the years to come.

“Balancing the inflation, the price stability and the financialsecurity of the country are some of the key challenges theReserve Bank faces” said Dr. Duvvuri Subbarao, Governorof Reserve Bank of India, while delivering the leadershipseries lecture at the Indian Institute of ManagementKozhikode on 6th July 2012.

Dr. Subbarao was addressing the students of IIM Kozhikodeand he spoke about the significant and the leadership rolesthat the Reserve Bank, since its inception in 1935, havebeen playing during the years with its monetary functionsand policies and in particular, its constant endeavour to berelevant to the everyday life of every Indian.

Speaking at the inauguration of the PGP batch at the IIMKozhikode he said, “Without sacrificing growth, we willnot be able to contain inflation. However, the sacrifice isonly for a short period. The economy should be stabilizedor else there will not be investments. Low inflation is also

The Governor emphasized that the concept of the apex bankis not only to regulate the economy and financial stabilityof the country but also to reach out to the under privileged.This is a quintessential function of the central bank withobjectives such as ensuring price stability, growth andfinancial security in the market. A post economic reformthat the Government has brought through RBI has helped

the country boom and has fuelled the India’s aspiration tobecome a super power. India has moved from being arepressed country to an ever growing state.

The Governor pointed out that the poor sections of thesociety should derive benefits from the banking sector suchas hassle free financial transactions as well as access tocredits. The Governor informed that as of todayonly one out of six of the habitats in India have access tofull-fledged banking services, which is quite inadequateand need to be addressed proactively. The RBI will have toconsider hundreds of millions of poor people who aredirectly affected by inflation, along with corporates whilesetting interest rates, said Dr. Subbarao. Business peopleare vociferous about interest rate hike. Howeverwe have to consider the poor sections of societywho are affected by inflation than wealthy people, heexplained.

Dr. Subbarao inaugurated the RBI Gallery in theIndian Business Museum at the Indian Institute ofManagement Kozhikode. RBI Gallery is one of thesignificant sections in the Business Museum. TheGallery speaks of the evolution of the Reserve Bank aswell as the origins and history of the financial system inIndia.

Speaking on the Indian Business Museum, Dr. Subbaraoapplauded the Institute saying, “IIMK is a trailblazer in its

endeavour to globalize Indian thought leadership with itsefforts to guide and teach aspiring banking, financialprofessionals the origins of a strongly founded financialsystem”.

Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIMK, added “the RBIGallery is indeed a welcome addition to the wealth ofinformation in the Museum and expressed hope that it willinspire the visitors with more insights on this importantsector”.

Another criticism against the Bank is that the RBI cannotcontrol inflation as it is caused by external factors. Dr. Raosaid that the inflation over the last two years had been‘imported inflation’ related to the price of oil. Dr. Rao addedthat the Bank is sympathetic to the genuine voice of thecorporate, but inflation hurts the poor much more. Theirvoice is not represented in the media. They need to be heardas much as the corporates. Whatever the reason for inflation,we have to stabilize the economy. We are trying to draw aparallel between the growth rate and inflation.

The apex bank is also considering the introduction ofpolymer notes on a pilot basis in the country. “These noteshave been introduced in Singapore and Australia. Itslongevity is one of its main advantages. An environmentalstudy on the impact of the notes has already been conducted.Also, since it would be in circulation for a longer period,its impact to environment would be negligible”, he added.

August 2012 by inviting Mr Partho Kar, a true practitionerof business ethics.

A graduate from London School of Economics & PoliticalScience and XLRI-Jamshedpur, Mr Partho is currently theManaging Director of Brookes Enterprises - an Investment,and Strategy Consulting Company. He has beeninstrumental in developing the company’s new market &customer contact strategy. He undertook a completeBusiness Process Re-engineering in the year 2009 that hascompletely transformed the company and consequently thebottom line.

A distinguished figure in the fashion industry , Mr Kar wasthe CEO of Madura Garments of the Aditya Birla Group,where he lead by example and grew a business from 13crores to 230 crores in a short span of two and half years.Apart from his many accomplishments in the businessarena, Mr Partho Kar is a trained musician and appreciatesJazz and Hindustani Classical Music, Reading andcollecting art & antiques.

He talked about the importance of looking at sustainabilityalong with profit. He cited the example of how the textileindustry in Tirupur had to relocate because of rampantgroundwater pollution done by short sighted business

owners. He also talked about the values of ethics in businessand how earning trust and credibility is as important asearning revenues.

After the inspiring speech, he was asked many questionsby the students. One was how to balance one’s personalambitions and the needs of the society. To this, he repliedthat one should not be too adamant. Believing in ‘It is eithermy way or the highway’ will stop all the progress. As anexample, he contrasted the action plans of Anna Hazareand Mahatma Gandhi. Anna Hazare was very rigid withrespect to his demands and refused to move ahead until allhis demands were met. Gandhiji, on the other hand keptbuilding on whatever was granted. With this continuousprogress he was able to eventually gain freedom for India.

Another question put to him was, “With the rampantcorruption around, it is very difficult for corporations toexcel. Is it a vicious cycle - to grow, you have to bribesomeone and you can’t root out corruption till you grow?”In response to this, he gave the example of a textilecompany which employed female workers from the lowerstrata of the society. These efforts impressed the then ChiefMinister of Uttar Pradesh which then ensured completesupport from the Government in every aspect. Thusalternate strategies can be found out to co-operate with thegovernment.

The Foundation Day lecture was very inspiring andmotivated the students to integrate ethics in their workculture and remember their responsibilities towards thesociety wherever they are.

Workshop on Supply Chain Management, July 2012

IIM Kozhikode hosted a first-of-its-kind workshop inSupply Chain Management on the 7th and 8th of July;conducted by Mr. Ali Hasnain Ghoghai, Senior Managerat DHL Supply Chain Solutions, a revered name in theglobal Operations-Supply Chain domain. The event wasorganized by Industry Interaction Cell (IIC) incollaboration with OMEGA (the operations interest group)of IIMK.

Mr. Ali Hasnain Ghoghai’s managerial experience spansacross solution designing, operations, procurement, supplychain management and commercial negotiations in retail -electronics, food products and petrochemicals,e-commerce/e-retail Industries. He has extensiveexperience involving global freight management, India/GCC/UAE land transport management, warehousemanagement, inventory management and strategic supplychain planning. Mr. Ghoghai is an MBA GoldMedalist from S.P. Jain Institute of Management andResearch with specialization in Global Logistics andSupply Chain Management.

The workshop was conducted over two days. Two lectureswere scheduled on the 7th of July followed by presentationsof the top 5 teams who qualified for the DHL Supply ChainCase Challenge.

The first day saw a lecture-cum-interactive session ongeneral outline of Supply Chain Management in which hehighlighted the key differences between SCM in theoryand SCM in practice and the core skills required for SCMand basic market offered career paths for different SCM

professional roles. Mr. Ghogai also talked on the emergingconcepts in SCM in India like FTWZ (Free Trade andWarehousing Zones) and LLP (Lead Logistics Partner),GST (Goods & Services Tax) and its impact on the SupplyChain industry. A post dinner informal career counsellingsession followed when Mr. Ghogai dealt with questions onindividual careers based on the individual’s past experienceand skills.

The mainstay of the workshop is the “DHL Supply ChainCase Challenge”. The case was all about designing awarehousing and transportation solution for an e-commercecompany. The top 5 teams were shortlisted by Mr. AliGhoghai himself. These teams presented on the second dayand were jointly evaluated by Mr. Ali Ghoghai andProf. Saji Gopinath. The session ended with a concludingspeech by Prof. Saji Gopinath, who also felicitated Mr.Ghoghai before the declaration of results.

Mr. Ali Ghoghai, highly impressed with the presentationsof the top 5 teams, promised to visit IIM Kozhikode oftenin the future.

Leadership Lecture Series, July 2012

Mr. Uday Chaturvedi

IIM KOZHIKODE welcomed Mr. Uday Chaturvedi oncampus on 11th of July 2012. He was the former ManagingDirector – Corus Strip Products, UK and Former ChiefTechnical Officer - Tata Steel Europe and he is one ofthe most revered names in the global steel industry. Theevent was organized by Industry Interaction Cell (IIC)of IIMK as part of the celebrated “Leadership LectureSeries”.

Mr. Chaturvedi served as the Director in many Tata Groupcompanies and held elite positions at Corus Strip Productsand Tata Steel prior to becoming the Chief TechnicalOfficer – Tata Steel Europe. He has a vast experiencespanning across the globe – India, United Kingdom,Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, Japan and SriLanka. Having authored numerous technical paperspublished in International Conferences and being presentedwith honorable awards like Essar Gold Medal, OP JindalGold Medal, Mr.Chaturvedi is undoubtedly one of the mosteminent personalities in the global steel industry.

During his tenure as the Managing Director of Corus StripProducts, UK, in the midst of the global financial crisis, hedemonstrated exemplary levels of Strategic Leadership andpioneered several Change Management Initiatives whichturned the Corus Strip Products division into a profitableand self-sustainable enterprise and took it to greater heightsof business excellence. Known for his Strategic Leadershipand Change Management Initiatives, his colleagues atCorus rightly said “You Came, You Listened and Youshowed us How to WIN”.

He interacted with the students of IIM Kozhikode andshared his learning on “Strategic Leadership and ChangeManagement”, drawn from his personal and professionalexperiences of successful leadership that he demonstratedover the years. Mr. Chaturvedi also interacted withProf. Debashish Chatterjee, Director, IIMK and severalother faculty members.

Mr. Chaturvedi was extremely pleased with his visit toGod’s Own campus and had kind words of praise reservedfor the Institute, “One of the late management Gurus whomI knew personally very well for many years had once toldme that the smell of a place communicates a lot about it. Iwould say that I was very impressed from the moment I setmy foot at the Calicut airport to the time I left the city. Awonderful manicured garden with attractive buildings,highly courteous and inquisitive student communitysupported by very knowledgeable teaching fraternity andfinally, the Director make the presence felt in all walks oflife at the Institute... Mr. Amol Kotwal, 20 July 2012

The students of Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode(IIMK) had the privilege of being audience to Mr. AmolKotwal who shared his insights on the topic of “Buildinga sustainable energy portfolio for India for the future”.The event was organized by the Industry Interaction Cellof IIM Kozhikode. IIC frequently invites eminent leaders

of the industry for guest lectures, keeping the studentsconstantly in tune with important aspects of business thatneed attention.

Mr. Amol Kotwal, the Deputy Director – Energy & PowerSystems Practice, Frost & Sullivan visited IIM Kozhikodeon the 20th of July. He had a highly interactive sessionwith students, who found the session extremely interestingas it added to their knowledge about the Indian Energysector.

For a developing economy like India, in order to maintainthe high growth trajectory, energy security is the need ofthe hour but this requires new and innovative thinking andeffectiveness through structural change. Talking about“Sustainable Energy Management”, Mr. Kotwal focusedon how tapping the non-conventional energy sources, isthe key for India in order to meet its rapidly rising futureenergy demands. He also talked about how to overcomethe technological challenges which stand as one of thebiggest barriers for large scale commercialization of thesame.

Sustainable energy management is an emerging area ofdiscussion and is becoming a key component in the strategicdecisions of big corporates and Mr. Kotwal, in his speech,touched upon the potential risks associated with attractinginvestments and related government initiatives in thissector.

This session wasorganised by the Industry Interaction Cell of IIM

Kozhikode, which spearheads the student’s relations withthe industry.

Mr. Kaul, CEO, Jubilant Food Works Ltd. had veryinteresting insights to share on the food retailing industrywhere Dominos’ currently tops the organized pizza deliverysegment with a giant market share of 70%. He discussedthe unique brand positioning of Dominos as a deliverybased brand as opposed to the dine-in path chosen bycompetitors. He pointed out the specific issues that plaguea time bound segment such as pizza delivery and sharedthe Dominos’ methods that were used to successfullyovercome the same.

While throwing light on the journey of Dominos from“Hungry Kya” to “Khushiyonki Home Delivery”, helaid emphasis on often overlooked factors such as thedelivery boy who is the real face of the brand to thecustomer. Elaborating on the role played by the deliveryboys, he impressed the importance of human resourcemanagement at Dominos which sees even its ex-employeesreturning during peak days to help in delivery, “thus is theirbonding with the brand”, he said. He also shared some ofthe earlier ad campaigns of Dominos to drive home theimportance of occupying consumer mind space and thecommunication of brand image. Mr. Kaul also shared hisinsights into Building a High Performance Organizationfrom his professional experiences. Under him, Dominoshas grown leaps and bounds.

Answering students’ questions, Mr. Kaul, insisted thatIndian mentality towards delivered food has come a longway, but is yet to grow. The event which was an enrichingexperience for the students closed with words of gratitudeand appreciation from Prof. Joffy Thomas, Faculty,Marketing Management, IIM Kozhikode.

Talk on Social Entrepreneurship by

Mr. Gyanesh Pandey

Mr. Gyanesh Pandey, Founder and CEO, Husk PowerSystems

Mr. Gyanesh Pandey addressed the students as a part ofthe ‘Guest Lecture Series’ and deliberated on the topic

“Social Entreprenourship”. This session was organisedby the Industry Interaction Cell of IIM Kozhikode, whichspearheads the student’s relations with the industry, on the27th of July.

He talked about his journey from a cushy, highly paid jobin the US (where he had worked for five years) to the innerconflict which compelled him to come back to hishometown in West Champaran district of Bihar. He had asingle aim – to uplift the living conditions of the people inhis hometown, and being an electrical engineer from IT-BHU, electrification of villages was an intuitive decision.He co-founded Husk Power Systems in 2007, and today, itprovides electricity to over 250 villages in Bihar.

Mr. Pandey was able to strike a chord with the audienceright from the beginning, when he talked about howembarrassed he was of his identity and how that eventuallyled him to coming back to India and electrifying villagesin Bihar. He busted the twin myths of success and failurefor an entrepreneur – he said that all our actions shouldn’tbe governed by the success or failure of those actions. Thesingle minded aim of an entrepreneur should be to solve aproblem, and concentrate only on finding a solution, asopposed to making pots of money.

The session was interactive, and Mr. Pandey kept trying toprovoke a response out of students. He also mentioned alife altering event where he was pushed into attendingVipassyana sessions by a girlfriend, which eventuallyled him towards making the decision to move back toIndia. Mr. Pandey put up a number of persuasivearguments in terms of the advantages of becoming anentrepreneur.

At the end, there was a Q&A session, in which questionsranging from the technical aspects of electricity productionto the ethical aspects of bribery and red-tapism commonlyencountered by entrepreneurs in government offices.Theevent closed with expression of gratitude from the IndustryInteraction Cell.

The talk on branding oneself was to give the students ofIIM Kozhikode a perspective of how to portray theirpersonality in front of others such as prospective recruiters,colleagues and other audience. He spoke about howbranding oneself and differentiating oneself is veryimportant in a competitive world. He mentioned that everyperson needed to be explicit about his achievements inlife.

Mr. Nair used his experience to share how famouspersonalities also use this method to improve their portrayalof themselves. Adding further, he emphasized theimportance of adapting oneself to any situation that one isfaced with. According to him, every individual has differentaspects attached to his personality that he portrays whenhe is with his family, friends or colleagues. He used HRconcepts like the Johari window to drive home the pointthat self- actualization is very important in life.

Mr. Nair used this platform to insist that each and everystudent must reflect upon their strengths and weaknessesas an exercise and write down how they looked atthemselves as it would be beneficial for them in the longrun. Overall, the students appreciated his method andbelieved they would do their best to implement it as soonas possible.

Guest Lecture Series by Mr. Sandeep Dhar

Mr. Sandeep Dhar shared his insights on the topic “RetailInnovations, including IT, CRM and SCM”. Thestudents of IIM Kozhikode, found Mr. Dhar, CEO, TescoHindustan Service Centre, Bangalore, immensely inspiring.Tesco is the world’s third largest retailer with a turnover ofover 115 billion USD and employs over 500,000 peopleacross 14 countries. Mr. Dhar brought with him 20 yearsof experience in retail banking and IT consulting from histime holding prominent positions in various organizations.Alumnus of IMT Ghaziabad and the Wharton BusinessSchool, Mr. Dhar had a very thought provoking interactionwith the students.

Mr. Dhar discussed the importance of identifying thecustomer and the challenge it offers in business to customerrelationship management. He pointed out the specific issuesthat plague the retail industry where a ‘customer friendly’stance will not suffice. He urged managers to turn ‘customercentric’ which involves playing an active and appropriaterole in the entire life cycle of the customer.

He recalled his experiences in TESCO and earlier stint atCitibank to emphasis on the age old business mantra‘Customer is King’. He discussed the role played by highend IT in collecting consumer data and infact using thermalsensing in reducing their inconvenience while shopping.Mr. Dhar also predicted that the future of retail shopping

lay in the multiple channel strategies use where customersmix both e-commerce and physical retailing. He mentionedTESCO’s step in the same direction called ‘Click andCollect’ where customers order online and collect from theretail outlet.

Mr. Dhar gave the students a heads up on the challengesfaced by the Retail Industry, which is unique and highlycompetitive. He also patiently answered many queriesposed by the enthusiastic audience.

Guest Lecture Series by Mr. Anand Pillai

Mr. Anand Pillai shared his insights on the topic of“Personal Branding” with the students. The guest lecturewas held on the 19 August, 2012.

With more than 29 years of experience in corporate world,Mr. Anand has handled challenging assignments in generalmanagement and as Head of Operations in companies likeTata Group, Hughes Network Systems, Bay Networks andHCL. He has been appointed as a “Member of WorldEconomic Forum, Global Agenda Council on New Modelsof Leadership – 2011” given his thought leadership in thefield of Leadership and Innovation.

His pragmatic approach as opposed to a theoretical orphilosophical viewpoint to business, struck a chord withthe young listeners. The main emphasis of his talk was onPLB (Personal Leadership Brands). He laid out the fivebasic steps towards developingone’s own PLB:

� Recognition of your Yearning

� Rapid Learning

� Natural Flow

� Glimpses of Excellence

� Element of Satisfaction

Mr. Pillai suggested that the basic philosophy was simple:things that one will do without expecting any remunerationor compensation defines a person, and exhibit his/herpersonality. Once a person adapts the same in one’s career,one is bound to excel, because this creates a uniquepersonal brand which is customized for thatindividual and cannot have an external replica, saidMr. Pillai.

He also shared his mantra that cleared some clichés ofpersonal marketing: mistaking affirmation foraccomplishment, security for significance and immediatevictory for long-term sustainability. Mr. Pillai ended histalk with a heartwarming note that, ‘It is not the effort thatyou put in that counts, but the value that you bring alongwith it. It is not your achievements that you are rememberedfor, but the way you impact people’s lives’.

Mr. Chandrabhan Singh

IIM Kozhikode welcomed Mr. Chandrabhan Singh,General Manager, Marketing at India Cements, ChennaiSuper Kings division on 29th July, 2012. The talk wasorganized by MOWER, the official Marketing interestgroup of IIM Kozhikode.

Mr. Chandrabhan started his career as a trainee for GilletteIndia Ltd, and then moved on to Philips India Ltd wherehe worked for six years. At Philips India Ltd, he wasinstrumental in establishing Phillips as a brand of choicein the Flat television category in India. He also workedextensively for the launch of Captain Morgan, one of thesix global priority brands of Diageo, owners and makersof Johnnie Walker and Smirnoff brands. He has also workedas the Marketing Head of Kings XI Punjab for two years,helping create some interesting revenue-generatingintellectual properties such as ‘Fan of the match’ and‘Homecoming’.

He addressed the students as ‘Komrades’ and shared hislifelong experiences with special emphasis on ‘The CSKstory – what the management books don’t teach you’.Drawing from his challenging personal and professionalexperiences, he said that a person is defined by what he

does and not just by what he learns in the confines of aclass, thereby stressing on practical learning. He advisedthe gathering to adopt the lesson of ‘being humble to learnand confident to unlearn’ in order to achieve success inlife.

Unveiling the story of IPL from an idea in conceptualizationto successful implementation over the years, he narratednumerous personal experiences and discussed how takingdecisions in a real life business scenario is much more thanapplication of stated concepts. He showed studentsthefamous tenets in conventional management for decision-making in Marketing. He shared about how he took counterdecisions for IPL team Chennai Super Kings whichachieved phenomenal success. Some of the noticeableresults he shared were: CSK being a disciplined team, theplayers were given autonomy in making decisions crucialfor the team, and also innovating the different productlines for team merchandise. His efforts won CSK to notonly be limited to an IPL team but be an altogether SportsBrand.

He interacted with students in a Q&A session and in hisclosing remarks, urged them to aspire to generateemployment, create wealth, for India to rise and shine inthe future as ‘Future is Bright, Future is Yellow’.

A.F. Mathew has been teaching full time at the postgraduate level since 2000. Prior to hisacademic career, Prof. Mathew has also worked as Member, Committee for Protection ofDemocratic Rights (CPDR), Mumbai. This was on a voluntary basis (1995-2000). Duringhis stint at the CPDR, he has been part of many fact finding teams investigating human rightsissues in conflict regions of India. Krescendo, the music club of IIMKorganized an open mic night event,‘One Night Stand’ on 20 August togive a platform to the singers toshowcase their skills. Despite theirhectic schedules, IIMK students gavean overwhelming response to theinitiative with a large number ofenthusiastic guitar novices and semi-pros taking interest in developing earsfor music and fingers for the guitarstrings. The live music and the livelyaudience paved the way for manysuch nights.

IIMK has a rich tradition of quizzing.Atharva, the quizzing club of IIMKorganizes campus quizzes from timeto time to enthuse the students anddevelop a healthy competitive spiritamong them. This year, Atharvastarted the quiz season with ‘Acrossthe Universe’ quiz held on 7 August.On the 65th Independence Day,Atharva brought out the spirit of the

country by conducting ‘India Quiz’,a quiz that took everyone on a journeythrough all that makes our Bharattruly Mahaan. After the roaringsuccess of both the quizzes, theproducers of Atharva gave a taste ofbusiness quiz on 22 August with “TheQuiz with the Biz Tattoo”. It saw ahuge turnout and for the first time thisseason, PGP16 displaced PGP15 fromthe top slot.

Theatrix, the dramatics club of IIMKis actively involved in producing fulllength and one act plays. It showcasedthe first production of this season inRangmanch-7 series on 25 July. Theevent showcased the play “Toba TekSingh” adapted from a short story bySaadat Hasan Manto. The team did a

‘Open Night’ on 23 August which sawa lot of talented individuals enthrallingthe campus with their entertainingacts.

“This is why I studiedliterature in college. Thisis why I became ateacher: to share in grandconversations aboutbooks, to spread the joy,to initiate and welcomestudents into thefraternity, into... “the clubof clubs,” to travel withthem into wondrouslyfamiliar or incrediblystrange imaginativeworlds”.

These are the words of Jeffrey DWilhelm and they stand true in allrealms of education, both deliveringand obtaining. The gravity and the auraof these words and the associatedfeelings were truly felt by one and allwhen the management , the professorsand the PGP 15 students put their heartand soul into welcoming the newbiesof PGP 16 into the incredibly,wonderful fraternity called IIMKozhikode. The induction weekbeginning July 2 to July 6, 2012 isetched into the memories of the newbatch because the week made themproud of their achievement of makingit to the God’s K-campus, made themecstatic about the fact that they are safein the hands of the most distinguishedfaculty, made them motivated tocompete with the elite minds coming

from all parts of the country andrendered them the feeling that the truejourney begins now - the journey ofdiscovering innate talent, the journeyof discovering the inner self, thejourney of accomplishing big andgrand, the journey of leaving a mark inthe world and the journey of upliftmentof both self and others.

The inauguration ceremony byhonourable Director Prof. DebashisChatterjee ignited in each one, theflame of passion. He rightly said, “Wedefine ourselves as a sociallyconscious, environmentally sensitivemanagement school”. The essence ofhis talk was brought by his poem’sbeautiful line - “Listen to the sound ofsilence because that is the true voice,every other noise is mere echoes”.

His gesture of individually shakinghands with the PGP 16 batch movedall. The moment carried with itself abright halo and innumerable smiles.

The entire PGP16 batch then took oathwhere each one promised to take allthe responsibility of their actions andbe accountable for foreseeableconsequences. They also pledged tohold every other human being in highregard acknowledging the inherentdifferences, honoring the right ofothers to be treated with dignity.Everyone promised to act with utmostintegrity and pursue all workupholding the highest ethicalstandards.

The next day began with the Kadavuresort trip. It made all hearts poundwith joy. The place was beautiful, theatmosphere in the Pandal waselectric and the faces were lit.Mrs. Neha Pai’s enlightenment onIndustry’s expectations frommanagement graduates made lot ofgoals clearer and clouds of anxietypass away regarding the skills soughtafter. The session on leadership byProf. Chatterjee saw a plethora ofdoubts, emotions, apprehensions andinsights in the open and informal

discussion. At the end of the sessionwe lighted matchsticks together andraised them. Harmony and joypervaded the entire room. It was sucha peaceful feeling.

Various activities that the studentsengaged in brought into thelimelight important concepts likegroup dynamics, perseverance,commitments etc. Interaction withalumnus Krishna Swami focused onfacets of entrepreneurship, riskinvolvement, strategies, networkingand allied areas. He gave us an insightinto the IIM life and asked us to be apart of all Kampus activities. Don’t begrade or placement centric, he warned.

PGP Chairman Prof. Anandakuttanintroduced various subjects, credits,criteria of grades. The various caseworkshops held fascinated thestudents and gave an insight aboutvarious sectors and how the industryworks. The orientation about Library,information resources and ITinfrastructure made it prominentlyclear that those are the places wherethe days and nights would be spentwith piles of books and assignments.The interaction with Chairman ofStudent Affairs, Prof Anupam Das was

very entertaining with videos abouthuman traits, both comic andinspirational. Sri Swami DayanandSaraswati helped us walk through theroads of spirituality and helped usunderstand the inner light of wisdom.Prof. A.F. Mathew’s session aboutsocial transformation ensured that hegot a thumbs-up from everybody.There wasn’t even one individual whodid not leave the auditorium clappingand laughing. Oodles of respect forhim enraptured each one of us as heshook the very foundations of all ourbeliefs and actions.

The meeting with academic areashelped us know the professors-ourmoulders (read the Powerful gradegivers) and of course, the subjects-oursleep destroyers for the next two years.RBI governor, Dr. D. SubbaRaostarted with explaining the nitty-gritties of finance and slowly weavedinto it the bigger picture of the Indianeconomic scenario. The dignifiedpersonality left all of us mesmerizedand learned. This entire week hadmade all of us realise the gravity andstature of the institution we were a partof. Each day was worth cherishing.

Shashank Singh“Before entering IIM Kozhikode, Iwas one of those blue-eyed boys whowould dream about all the good thingswaiting for him at an IIM. My journeyat IIMK thus far has been challengingbut exciting. To start with, the folkloreof “An IIM never sleeps” no longerintrigues me. Before I could recollectmy senses after landing up in themiddle of a picturesque valley, thedays had become grueling, nightssleepless, skipping meals had becomea common place and deadlinesseemed to have occupied every cornerof the planet. There was yet anothere-mail from a professor, another caseto be discussed, another presentation

to be made, another assignment to besubmitted, a new project to becompleted and another guest lectureto be attended. A new day was yetanother battle to be won. Butgradually things are starting to fall inplace. I look back at past one monthand I am astonished by how quicklythings have turned upside down forme. New friends, new places, newcuisines, new schedules- with all theserefreshing memories of past onemonth, I look ahead to an exciting stayat IIMK”.

Uttkarsh Rastogi“It has been just about two monthssince I arrived at this place for the firsttime and there are not a lot manyplaces which you can call home insuch a short span of time. IIMK is aplace which I can. Apart from all theseexperiences the one thing on almosteveryone’s mind is the summerinternships. The CV buildingexercises, GD workshops and variousbatch meets all focus on preparing us

for the companies that will finallyarrive on campus. So is getting theperfect intern and a job is all that Iexpect from IIMK? Well to an extent,yes but beyond that I hope that mytime here will help me in knowingwhat I most enjoy doing. This timehere with such a lot of opportunitiesis about self-discovery. When againwill any of us be able to evaluateourselves?

I don’t mean to sound veryphilosophical but the fact is that wehave so many options for our futurein front of us. Oh I just used optionsand future together. Suppose I did myBusiness Computing project but itdidn’t interest me much, I can alwaysmove on to creating value throughmarket segmentation in the Marketingproject or maybe convince othersabout the art of persuasion in myManagerial Communication project.Once we are in the corporate world,switching streams becomes verydifficult even after one knows what

he is interested in, leave alone for me,who is still trying to find the verticalof his interest. Don’t tell that to thecompanies coming for recruitment.Let that be our little secret”.

The U.S. Consul GeneralMs. Jennifer A. McIntyrealong with the Visa Officer,Programme Officer, PublicRelations Officer and theRegional Officer of theUS - India EducationalFoundation visited the IIMKozhikode on 16 July 2012.Ms. Jennifer led thedelegation and heldextensive discussions withProf. Debashis Chatterjee, theDirector of IIM Kozhikode, onpossible collaborations in itsdevelopment agenda andtowards academic support.

The delegation also met the faculty ofthe Institute and discussed about thevarious programmes, services and therange of activities that the Fulbright-Nehru Foundation and the U.S.Government have been offering to theIndian citizenry. The visit assumessignificance at a time when the US-India Educational Foundation, theFulbright Commission in India, hasjust announced the fellowshipcompetitions open to Indian citizensfor 2013-2014. Ms. Jennifer, duringthe discussions, has ensured thateducational sector in Kerala will begetting a great share of support fromthe Consulate and the US Governmentin the wake of the Singh-ObamaKnowledge Initiative which wassigned between the heads ofGovernments of both the USA and

India, in 2010. Speaking onthe occasion, IIMK DirectorProf. Debashis Chatterjee stated, “Ourcollaboration with the US-IndiaEducational Foundation and theConsulate’s services will fosterexcellence and lend cross culturalperspectives to the academic pursuits.We are also hoping that IIMKozhikode’s new creation the IndianBusiness Museum, will be a hub ofknowledge for US academics whowould like to understand the historyand evolution of business of India”.The delegation also visited the IndianBusiness Museum at IIMK andMs. Jennifer McIntyre, while givingher remarks on the digital idea wall,lauded the Institute for the brilliantwork done by creating the IndianBusiness Museum.

Fellow Programme in Management is the doctoralprogramme at the Indian Institutes of Management. AtIIMK, the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) isviewed as a crucial source of management researchers andsuperior faculty both to the academic institutions and tothe industry, business, government and society. Thedoctoral programme was started in the year 2007-08 andsince then it has seen a constant rise in interest from theapplicants. The very process of research even without the academicpart is an education in itself. It is a highly tedious andsometimes frustrating process. The IIMK culture takes alot of pressure off the students, making research a muchmore enjoyable and fulfilling endeavour. We can proudlyboast of a highly supportive and friendly environment. The workshopwitnessed huge participation of morethan 250 independent musicians andpeople in the music industry. In 2012,we changed our shift to morefundamental issues. We targeted aparticular singing choir groupcomposed of musicians from not thatwell to do families. We did needsassessment with them to figure outtheir aspirations, the main difficultiesfaced by them and the things theywanted to learn from the Open House

Series. On the basis of their responses,we formulated a curriculum and helda series of 5 workshops with themover the weekends. “IBM annuallyconducts nationalcompetition called‘The Great MindChallenge’. It isbasically a software

development competition wherewe are given number of problemstatements based on real life issuesand each team is supposed to selectone among them. Based onthe problem statement andfunctional requirements, weneed to design a software or a webbased solution. Every year, a largenumber of teams from allover India participate in thiscompetition.

In 2010, I participated along with 3of my classmates as a team. We madea website called ‘Save Her FromCancer’ to help women suffering fromvarious forms of cancer. Our aim wasto provide them online medicalconsultancy service. Other important

goals were to spread awarenessthrough experts’ articles, to providefinancial help and to facilitatecommunication between differentusers (patients, doctors, medicalactivists and NGO’s) by using polls,forums, messages, e-mails andnewsletters. We built a databasemanagement system to provide easyaccess to information about variousforms of cancer, seminars,camps, hospitals and latestdevelopments.

There were three rigorous rounds inthis competition. We successfullycleared all and made it to the top 3 allgirls’ teams in India”.

An interview with the RBI Governor

Indian bond market is often viewed as relativelyunderdeveloped by most measures (Corporate bondsector is illiquid-small relative to size of domesticeconomy while government securities are illiquid acrossmost of yield curve). Recently RBI Working committeecame up with some recommendations on enhancingliquidity in securities market. What exactly is beingdone?

Well, you spoke about those segments of bond market (bothgovernment and corporate bond markets), Government isquite active, it has worked very hard over ten years to makesecondary market quite robust, quite a lot of trading takesplace for indication of price discovery. In contrast corporatebond market is underdeveloped. Problem is both of supplyand demand. Over the last few years a lot has been done todeepen and activate it. You must realize corporate bondsare important for long term financing but it’s the absenceof a deep and active bond market we live in.

RBI has done a lot like opened accounts with centralcounterparties, however this has not picked up for severalreasons such as stamp duties making it much easier toborrow from banks than bond markets. As a result it’s hardto grow demand for corporate bond markets.

Do you see a possibility of any rate rigging in the Indianmarket like the one we have seen for LIBOR in UK? Ifnot, what are the controls in place to prevent such ahappening?

In India comparable is MIBOR and that is estimated byNSE which is regulated by SEBI. We have a quite robust

statistical system. But I am sure with the experience ofLondon they will need to reinvent the method of estimation.

But what is more important from RBI perspective is thereference rate for the exchange – that reference rate whichis important for foreign exchange transactions in domesticmarkets and more importantly there is an NDF (NonDeliverable Forward) market outside country and thereference rate can be used to arbitrage NDF market.

For months we used to estimate rates by asking banks togive their exchange rate but we realized there’s scope formanipulation, for rates moving out of trend so we changedthe system by taking mean rates. So in a way we have beenahead of curve and have tried to take care of somemanipulation possible. We need to realize market is alwaystrying to get ahead of manipulations so there is a constantgame of regulation in market.

Recently we have seen that some data revisions havebeen quite drastic, especially in IIP numbers, how doesRBI in general incorporate data uncertainty in themonetary policy decision-making process?

Of course! We are consumers of data given by agenciesparticularly the government agencies for inflation, growth,IIP etc. so you are right there has been a lot of revision,substantial revision that makes it difficult for us to makeanalysis.

There has been improvement in this. People have told usthat for inflation they don’t get sufficient responses in time.A lot of lagged data comes later on and that spikes the

measures. One way of improving this is to improve thepercentage of responses. I think problem in India is not somuch of statistical techniques but that of getting sufficientlylarge number of responses to make them robust and I amsure government department is working on this. Goodquality of data is very important for us to makeforecasts.

Though slowdown happened, Indian banks have beenpraised worldwide for being relatively unscathedthrough global financial crisis. Can you throw light onfinancial stability framework RBI followed that helpedus survive the crisis?

Well actually credit for this should go to RBI as aninstitution and my predecessors (like) Dr Reddy who wasthe governor in years after the crisis.

RBI was actually ahead of curve in seeing that there weresome pressures building up in global financial system. Partof this was being transmitted to Indian financial systemand banks took measures to prevent their build up by wayof tightening provisioning norms for sectors such ashousing,consumer loans and for people borrowing forcapital markets, what after the crisis had becomefashionable as macro-prudential measures in financialsector regulations.

Also RBI was ahead of curve but we still need to be pushingthe frontier. We were fortunate enough of insulatingourselves from Global Financial Crisis of 2008-09 that doesnot mean we have insulated ourselves from all crises forall times. We have to constantly be on alert and we aretrying to adapt global best practices to Indian situation.There are now New BASEL-3 guidelines. Implementingthem will be challenging for Indian financial sector andRBI, but we will have to manage it.

How will you manage the challenge of implementationof BASEL-3 norms?

Well there are several levels. First is improve riskmanagement system both into Indian banks and RBI whichis the regulator. That is a long process for which there is atime table. We are trying to learn from the best practicesaround the world. Second big challenge is to train thetrainees, train operation level staff. We will also have tomake sure when need for credit to grow in economy (credit/GDP ratio) is to go up because economy is growing fast.At the same time we need to ensure cost of credit does notgo up because of BASEL 3 which requires banks to becomemore efficient as they have to provide higher capital orreduce operational cost so that they can deliver credit atcompetitive rates.

Timeline for BASEL-3 is 2019 but RBI is intending to

complete by 2017. Why, do it two years ahead vis-à-visglobal banks. Is this measure in line with the stringentoptimistic approach?

BASEL 3 time table itself was quite long drawn .Lot ofdebate went into whether date should be extended. In Indiatypically regulations have been tighter. For estimating datayou need high quality data because we don’t want to havetransgressions. In order to ensure there are no transgressionswe have made our guidelines tighter than globalguidelines.

Usha Thorat had come up with banking correspondentmodel to bring about financial inclusion. What is beingdone about it?

Well quite a lot. India has 600,000 villages and we have100,000 banking correspondents (one in every 6 villagesin country has a banking correspondent). Idea is to provideformal financial sector to every household in the country(that is the eventual target).

We found that until two years ago only about 30,000habitations were covered by regular brick mortar branches.We wanted banks to penetrate but setting brick and mortaris expensive proposition, so business correspondent is agood innovation at a low cost to extend banking to unbankedareas. However it’s not without problem.First of all,business correspondents have to be trained. Second theyneed to have (build) trust and confidence of people to whomthey are trying to sell. Third at present remuneration is notlarge enough to sustain. Remuneration can improve onlywhen volume of transaction improves. We are trying toaddress these challenges. So business correspondent is agood intermediary model that leverages on technology.

Do you look at it as a long term solution?

Yes. For us to set up brick and mortar branch in 60,000habitations would take a fairly long time .It might happenin your lifetime. We can certainly provide businesscorrespondent to every habitation.

I believe that business correspondents are attached to branchso business of business correspondent is attributed to thatbranch. So it’s more of an agency of the branch than acompetitor.

Of late rupee has been depreciating. What do you thinkwill be the bottom line?

I can’t really speculate on what measures we can take orwhat exchange rate might be but just to correct impressionwe have seen appreciating, for only last one year we haveseen depreciation which is reflection of external situationas well as domestic circumstances .

Following that, Mr. Anand from Verizon India, a PGP02 alumnus visited his alma mater after 13 long years andwas truly amazed to be back in God’s Own Campus.Mr. Anand who heads the Business Intelligence team inVerizon spoke on “Big Data”, Big Data is the next frontierfor innovation, competition & productivity.
