TH11 Anniversary 2009

It was in December, 1998 when Ping asked me to go with him to see the venue for what would later become GLV. Ping, who grew up learning English from tourists on the streets of Hangzhou, knew that English cannot be learned just from books. That was the beginning. People came when he opened the doors, and they are still coming to learn. The method of teaching has evolved from chat groups to so much more. Total immersion in the English language has not just succeeded with the students.

Having been part of the school since the beginning, I have seen the wonders of our growth. The school has always been a family. The Chinese and non-Chinese, the support staff; from the cleaners, the van drivers, to the teachers and the managers, we work together in a harmony that could never be planned or programmed. It is a unity of understanding that what we are doing is important, that everyone who comes through the doors of GLV is important, and that this kind of harmony has to go beyond our doors to the world.

The best story is that of the students whose lives have been changed, who have gone from GLV to new lives. We all get letters. And we keep the doors open – always – for new learning, for all of us.

How time flies! GLV's 11th anniversary is here already!

These days have been a rather emotional time for me as I am looking at photos of GLV’s early days, originally called the Peace Club . Memories of the early happenings of GLV flash back like movies, so vivid and unforgettable.

From The Editor

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the houseNot a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

gave the luster of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

but a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, with the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof,

the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.As I drew in my head and was turning around,

down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot,

and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled, his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

e sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight, Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!

Most people can agree

on what Santa Claus looks

like -- jolly, with a red suit

and a white beard. But he

did not always look that

helped shape this modern-

2006 marked the 75th

anniversary of the famous

Coca-Cola Santa Claus.

Starting in 1931,

magazine ads for Coca-

kind, jolly man in a red

suit. Because magazines

were so widely viewed, and

because this image of

than three decades, the

Straight from the heart, what an exciting time it is. The end of the year is here and it's full of festivities.

It all begins with the holidays, where we celebrate with our families. Santa is in his sleigh bringing lots of goodies to everyone.

New Year's Eve is a chance to put last year's worries behind us and the new year gives us hope and excitement for all our wishes to come true. So whatever your New Year's resolution is, I hope you can achieve it to the fullest.

Finally, I want to take a moment to give thanks to all our colleagues, staff, students and friends of GLV. What a great feat it is to reach eleven years of success. Congratulations to all for making this a great place to work, learn, study and play.

I'm proud to be here at GLV and I'm happy to be surrounded by so many wonderful people.

So to all, here's hoping that 2009 was your best year yet and that 2010 will be even better!

Once upon a time in a country

far, far away, there was a princess who lived in a big castle. She was very lovely and beautiful. All the men

Wanted to win her heart. But a

sorcerer cast a spell on the castle so no one could find the right path or the right door to the princess.

However, there was a brave

young man who loved the princess very much. He wanted to try to find her. So one day he started to sing love songs to her. His voice went through the trees, over the hills and across the water, all the way to her castle bedroom and reached the princess’ ears. She wanted to know

Whose wonderful voice it was.

The spell on the castle made by the sorcerer could confuse the eyes and minds; however, it couldn’t stop true love. At first, the princess tried earplugs to give her peace for her aching soul, but the young man kept singing his songs. The princess took out the earplugs and began to listen. Her heart began to melt as she heard the lovely voice singing the songs with lyrics which could read her mind. She went to the window, but couldn’t catch sight of this young man. When she pushed open the window one of the flowers in her hair fell down and was carried by the wind to the young man. Suddenly the man had an idea. He found out which direction the wind was blowing the flowers.

He used his pet dog to follow

the scent of the flowers with the hope of finding the garden where she picks her flowers. He continued to sing his songs but this time he sent her a message. In his song, he tells her to build a magic boat that can carry her to him. He would wait in the flower field until she comes. No matter how long she takes, he will never give up. Then at last they can fall in love.

Finally, the day arrived when

the princess was to meet the young man at the flower field. However, she was shy

because she was worried about what her father, the king, would say. She was nervous and didn't know what to do. She thought for three days and nights and made up her mind to not see the young man even though she knew he was her only true love. The young man waited and waited at the flower field but she never showed up. He was very sad and felt she had probably changed her mind. While he sat there broken hearted, the princess sent someone to bring him a magic boat. He assumed the worst and thought her message was to go far away from this frustrating place.

He climbed aboard and left the

flower field. Realizing what she had done, the princess' heart filled with sadness. The very next day, the princess went to her father and said.

The very next day, the princess

went to her father and said; “Dad, I want to stay with him. Why you won’t agree with me?”The King was very sad, and said,”I’m very old now; I will help you to find a very kind man. You just heard his voice, but you have never seen him. Do you know what kind of person he is?”

The princess said, “I don’t care

about your ambitions. I just care about my feeling.” So the King investigated the young man and asked to meet him.

The young man said, “Please trust

me! I can bring true love to your daughter.”

The King said, “You know my

daughter is older than you by five years!”

The young man said, “Even is she

older than me by five hundred years, I still love her very much!”

At the same time, the young man

went to a witch to ask for a magic spell to help him. The witch said, “I can help you, but you must give me something in exchange.” “Whatever you want I will give you because I need this power,” the young man said.

The witch said with a big wicked

smile and horrible voice, “Fine, now give me your…”
