The new varieties are known for their superior yield characteris- tics and high tolerance to the Black Sigatoka disease and have a lower cost of production and 25 per cent greater yield. The banana is being promoted by the Banana Board to enhance local banana fruit production. Head of ex- tension services, Banana Board, Oral Lewis explains that the FHIA hybrids are of a better consumer green quality than the traditional varieties . Their soft pulp makes them ideal for cooking and processing, especially for chips. With net bunch weight without the stalk is between 38 and 45 kg, and the number of fingers per bunch varies from 246 to 274. -More banana stories on page 12 By Patrick Maitland Editor-The Agriculturalist S ome eight years since Jamaica ceased the large-scale exportation of banana fruits to the United Kingdom (UK), the fruits are now in high demand on the overseas market, with orders for over ten containers or 9,000 boxes/week from UK, Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. Head of extension services, Banana Board, Oral Lewis reported that there is a current contractual arrangement with grow- ers and an importer from the UK which will see the first container leaving the Island in January 2015. This was preceed by a weekly supply of 2000kg/wk in June and July before the ex- treme effects of the drought condition forced a halt to this exercise. Lewis further went on to say that the overall substantiality of the in- dustry is tied to an export component, which will have major spin offs for growers and the country. “The market being emphasized how- ever is the Fair Trade Niche market which ensures a price above the cost of production while giving a premium of 1 USD for social development and/or production. This brings to fore the important issue of both GLOBAL GAP and Fair Trade Certifications which are crucial to this process. Thankfully the Ba- nana Board has the requisite personnel in place who are capable of implementing same,” he explained. According to Lewis, with very good technical support from the research and ex- tension units within the Banana Board, re- duced prices of inputs from the AIBGA and a growing demand for Jamaican banana both locally and overseas, the time is right for farmers to consider growing more of the fruit.
