Tonight as I raised my hand toaffirm my commitment toserve as governor of our district

for 2013-2014, the words of Fre-derick F. Crane flashed in mymind. To him is credited somewords of wisdom about service toothers: To make a man happy, fillhis hands with work, his heart withaffection, his mind with purpose, his memory with useful knowl-edge, his future with hope, and hisstomach with food. This is whatRotarians around the world havebeen doing for the last 108 years.Rotarians have been engaging

Rotary through its humanitarian and educational programsthat change lives to realize the dream of building a beautifuland peaceful world.

This is why Rotarys unique world of service is an exciting

world. It is one that offers happiness to those who serve andmake others happy. It is a unique world where committed menand women touch the lives of others, especially the poor andforgotten, to give them a taste of heaven on earth. Many ofthem feel that they are the least loved and cared for. So, evena small sign of kindness from others who are more fortunateraises their spirit to the heights of heaven. They experiencethis miracle in the many things we do to touch their lives.

I have seen this miracle happen many, many times in thecourse of my life as a Rotarian and as a Rotary leader. Andsomehow every time I see this miracle change lives I feel theincomparable joy that only service to others can give to a Ro-tarians heart. This is why I have remained a Rotarian for over

20 years now. The spirit of Rotary has inspired me to acceptthe challenge to lead our district as governor.

My friends, we can make the load lighter by working togetheras we wage a war against poverty, hunger, illiteracy, disease, crime, moral degeneration and enemies of the environment. We can work individually but with one common dream tobuild a better world. Everything we need, we have in our

hands. We have the programs of Rotary and those of TheRotary Foundation. Those programs have been designed to fitevery human need and all we have to do is reach for thoseprograms that suit the projects we have planned for our com-munities. If we need funds beyond the capacity of our clubs allwe need to do is seek help from our Foundation. We have acharitable foundation that ranks 14th biggest in the world. Weonly have to fill out the necessary application form andcomplete other requirements to avail of funds.

This is why Rotary has designed the Future Vision Plan tomake it easier for Rotary clubs to avail of Foundation funds. In

addition, funds will now comebigger amounts to meet the bigneeds of communities around

world. And the most wondething is that the new grant moof the Future Vision Plan begtomorrow, July 1.

Referring to the new grant moRI President-elect Ron Busaid, It takes everything thawonderful about Rotary and ra

it to a new level by encourag

    bigger, more sustainable proje

    while providing increas

    flexibility for local projects, bot

which address the needs of the community being served.

This, my friends, makes our year a truly exciting time to seothers. What can be more exciting than changing livesbuild a better world? What can be more inspiring than seepeople happy and contented in raising their families building better communities?

When we Engage Rotary and Change Lives, we build behomes, better communities, and a better world. We chalives through service in our clubs, service in our vocatioservice in our communities, service in countries beyond national borders and service to the youth. Through these, realize that Rotary is truly devoted to helping others a

promotes friendship, understanding, and peace. AndRotarians, we bring happiness to others as we dehappiness from helping them.

As I close, let me share with you the words of Johann Goethe which speak of his prescription for happiness: Health enough to make work a pleasure.

Wealth enough to support your needs.

Strength to battle with difficulties and overcome them.

Grace enough to confess your sins and forsake them.

Patience enough to toil until some good is accomplished.

Charity enough to see some good in your neighbor.

Love enough to move you to be useful and helpful to othe

Faith enough to make real the things of God.

Hope enough to remove all anxious fears concerning future.

These are the things that somehow give us a taste of heaon earth. These are the things that should make us beRotarians. These are beautiful and meaningful words tshould inspire us to give the best of ourselves in the servicothers.

This is why today I humbly commit myself to serve you as trict governor. And I shall serve with simplicity, humopenness, and accessibility

Camp Aguinaldo supports painting of worlds largest mural to convey peace messaBy FC President Robert Camba, RC Camp Aguinaldo

The Rotary Club of Camp Aguinaldofirst joined the project Lakbay Paraa Kapayaan sa EDSA on May 26, 2013,hen on June 9, 2013 and July 13, 2013.

is a project that aims to create theongest peace mural in the world.

he project's organizers (Asia Americanitiative, Armed Forces of thehilippines, Office of the Presidentialdviser on the Peace Process, Dolphinsove Freedom Movement, and Metro

Manila Development of Development),ay the undertaking aims to stretch toour kilometers, or 3,770 meters - thiseace mural along EDSA will beonsidered the longest peace mural inhe world surpassing the Guinnessecord- the "Chile Wall of Peace" which isnly 1,000 meters. It also aims toeighten public awareness about howilipinos can be part of the peace-uilding process.

ll the walls of Camp Aguinaldo will bedorned with peace-themed images - the.7 kilometer stretch along Boni Serrano

Avenue, the 1.3 km stretch along Edsaand the 0.8 km on White Plains. The 3.8km mural painting expresses a unifiedclamor for peace across the country, particularly in Mindanao. This projectalso serves as a wall of stories for the

Filipino society more aware and con-scious of our role in the peace buildingprocess.

Tracing back its history, the Epifanio DeLos Santos Avenue or EDSA has becomea symbolic venue for social changethrough peaceful means. Since suchgatherings have carved a movement ofpeace that foreign countries haverecognized as well, EDSA has alwaysstood for the Filipino peoples struggle for

peace, justice, and equality. It is only fit-ting then that this renewed challenge forpeace be demonstrated at this historicroad. The community spirit or bayanihanwas made alive again in EDSA when AAI,in collaboration with the AFP, OPAPP,DLF, and MMDA, initiated these series ofpeace mural painting activities along theits walls. After joining the event for sev-

    Dear fellow Rotarians,

This is an incredibly exciting time to bea Rotarian. This Rotary year can beone of the greatest years we have yetexperienced in Rotary but it is up to each

one of us. We are now writing the lastchapter in our fight against polio. While ithas been a long, hard journey, we have learned many valuablelessons. We have learned that as a group we can movemountains, we can change peoples lives for the better, and we

can honestly make a difference in our world. Perhaps the greatestlesson has been that the more we challenge ourselves, the more

    we can achieve.

We are also embarking on a new chapter in the storied history ofour Rotary Foundation. We have the rare privilege of launching anentirely new grant structure weve come to know as Future Vision.

It gives us the opportunity to challenge ourselves to do theabsolute most we can, with all of our resources. Just think how

much more we can do with a stronger Foundation, with strongerclubs filled with more Rotarians who are fully engaged in Rotary

    service.

Its time for us to recognize that the real challenge we face isnt

just bringing new members into Rotary. Its turning all members

into true Rotarians. Its helping members get engaged in Rotary helping them realize the potential they have, and how their Rotaryservice can change lives. We need to make sure that everymember is active and contributing, and making a real differencebecause when youre doing meaningful work in Rotary, Rotary is

    meaningful to you.

When we realize what we can achieve in Rotary when we really

engage Rotary thats when lives change. We change the lives ofthe people who need us. That is inevitable. And along the way,our lives are changed as well. That is also inevitable. Thats what

our theme is all about in 2013-14: Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

Its time to open our eyes to the potential each of us has through

Rotary. Rotary lets us reach higher, do more, and be a part ofsomething larger than ourselves. No matter how much we give to

Rotary, we get more in return. And that, too, is inevitable.

In 2013-14, lets turn all of our potential into reality. Its up to us.We can do it by engaging in Rotary service, by getting involved, bystaying inspired, and by remembering every day the gift we have

in Rotary. Together, we will Engage Rotary, Change Lives

Setting goals for a great year

I am excited as we move into the Rotary year. While Rotary remconstant at the core, our clubs and disthave new leaders, and weve set new g

    for the year ahead.

For 2013-14, we have four goals forRotary Foundation: eradicate polio,

ownership and pride in our Foundation, launch our new gmodel, and engage in innovative projects.

Our first goal is familiar to each of you: We must make our drof a polio-free world real. In the 28 years since the inceptioPolioPlus, we have immunized over two billion children and the wild poliovirus disappear in all but three countries. eradication is long, hard work, but when we have finishedjob, we will have achieved something wonderful and lasting

This brings us to our second goal: building ownership and p

in our Foundation. The success of PolioPlus is due, in no spart, to the generosity of Rotarians all over the world who contributed to the PolioPlus Fund. And why do Rotarians giving to the PolioPlus Fund? Because they see that generosity has a real, lasting impact on the lives of others. Ttake pride in the fact that their contributions mean that theof polio is in sight.

Our third goal will help us move into a successful future, polio is eradicated. This goal is to successfully launch our grant model and put our Future Vision Plan into practice wwide. The simplified grant structure has made it easier for cto apply for Foundation grants, and we have already seenbenefits of focusing our monetary efforts on sustainable proje

Lastly, our fourth goal for the coming Rotary year is to engaginnovative projects and creative partnerships that help bumore just and peaceful world.

Our theme for the year is Engage Rotary, Change Lives. Igood theme for Rotary, and for inspiring us to work throughRotary Foundation because without our Foundation, Rotreach is shorter and smaller. Without the Foundation, polio wstill be a worldwide scourge. If it werent for the work of

Foundation, children all over the world could face a fuwithout education, without clean water, and without health caWithout our Foundation, many of the worlds children would b

without hope. Your leadership in the coming year will providehope. May your efforts Engage Rotary, Change Lives .
