CONSTRUCTION BEGINS FOR THE SUICIDE DETERRENT SYSTEM

Work has begun to install temporary work access platforms on the Golden Gate Bridge (Bridge) for use during the construction of the Suicide Deterrent System (SDS). In mid-July, contractors began installing ladders and supports on the side of and under the Bridge that will allow workers to build four work access platforms under the Bridge. Each platform will be approximately 56 feet long by 150 feet wide and will travel underneath the Bridge, allowing workers to install the SDS’s net and supporting struts. To install the work access platforms, the contractor implemented weeknight lane closures of the Bridge southbound and northbound lanes during July and August. The Bridge remained open to all vehicle traffic during the lane closures.

On Sunday, September 9, Golden Gate Transit (GGT) Routes 30, 70, 101, and 101X will begin and end their trips at the new Salesforce Transit Center’s Bus Plaza, between Fremont and Beale streets on the street level. These routes will continue to serve the nearby Main Street & Folsom Street (northbound) and Beale Street & Howard Street (southbound) bus stops until September 8. After September 8, GGT will no longer serve these stops.

The new transit center provides convenient transfers between GGT, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (Muni), AC Transit, WestCAT, Amtrak, and Greyhound. GGT shares the street level Bus Plaza with Muni, while all the other agencies serve the Bus Deck, which travelers access by taking the escalators or elevators to the upper level. GGT’s commute routes continue to serve the stops on Fremont Street.

The Salesforce Transit Center, dubbed the “Grand Central Station” of the west, features a 5.4-acre rooftop park, several displays of public art, and will eventually house nearly three dozen shops and restaurants.

The original Transbay Terminal opened in 1939 and was a regional hub for more than 60 years. It closed in 2010 to make way for a new world-class transit center.

While construction of the new Salesforce Transit Center took place, transit agencies served a Temporary Transbay Terminal for eight years, ensuring that our customers were able to continue traveling to and from the heart of downtown San Francisco from all over the region.

New Larkspur Ferry Shuttle (Route 41) serves Smith Ranch Park & Ride.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District experienced a loss in July with the passing of our Advisory Committee on Accessibility (ACA) Chair Kent Hill. Mr. Hill was a long-time member of the ACA, an advocate for people with disabilities, and a huge San Francisco Giants fan. A resident of Sonoma County, Mr. Hill used Golden Gate buses and ferries to attend Giants games at AT&T Park. All who knew him will miss his easy demeanor and positive outlook. He will be greatly missed.

ROUTES 101 AND 101X: CHANGE TO NORTHBOUND ROUTING IN PETALUMA

Effective September 9, 2018, northbound routing for Routes 101 and 101X will be realigned in Petaluma. Instead of traveling on Washington Street, buses will travel on a portion of D Street. The new routing will improve the travel time in this area of Petaluma.

Due to the change, the bus stop on E. Washington Street at Petaluma Boulevard South will no longer be served, nor will the stop on the north side of 4th Street & C Street (next to Bank of the West). Instead, northbound Route 101 and 101X customers should use the stop on the south side of 4th Street & C Street (in front of the Mail Depot). Southbound customers will continue to use this stop as well. Northbound Routes 101 and 101X will continue to serve all other stops on this route. Southbound routing remains unchanged.
