Golden Gate Park Reservoir and Pump Station - Site Analysis
I. Existing Site Analysis, Site Circulation, & Access
• The Recycled Water Storage Reservoir and Pump Station will be located in the existing compost facility of Golden
Gate Park. The GGP compost facility is located on a hill in the geographic center of the park. The site and surrounding
areas within are owned by the City and County of San Francisco, Recreation & Park Department. It is screened by trees
from public view. Access to the site is from Overlook drive which runs parallel to the north side of the compost area. To
the north of the site is Lloyd Lake and JFK drive. To the east is Crossover Drive (19th to Park Presidio Dr.) and Stow Lake.
To the west is Middle Drive and Elk Glen Lake. To the south is Speedway Meadow. The site is located on Assessor’s
Block 1700, in a P (Public) zoning district. The proposed underground reservoir and above ground pump station will be
located immediately east of the existing Central Pump Station and Reservoir No 1 & 2. GGP composting will occur on
top of the underground reservoir and next to the pump station.

7Golden Gate Park Reservoir and Pump Station | Civic Design Review Phase 1 | August 21, 2014 General Design
Golden Gate Park Reservoir and Pump Station - General DesignThe New Recycled Water Treatment Facility will be located inside the Golden Gate Park Compost Facility. Building design and aesthetics will be
contemporary in harmony with the existing Pump Station and Golden Gate Park. Design will also be infl uenced by compost
operation requirements.
General Design
• to provide a protective envelope for the mechanical requirements of the project
• to organize the mechanical, electrical, and operational functions into an effi cient package
• to deliver recycled water for irrigation
• to provide processes for water storage, monitoring, and delivery
• to support electrical and mechanical functions
• to create minimal visual and environmental impacts
The Design goals of the proposed site location are:
• Minimize the visual massing impact of the new structures as viewed from the surrounding areas.
• Keep the building height.
• Allow for the greatest future implementation of Golden Gate Park Recreation and Park Department needs.
• Use architectural building language developed for existing Central Pump Station.
• Facilitate GGP composting storage and production.
• Screen (E) Compost Yard & Pump Station from public view.
