Despite a drastic cut in resources this year, Fleet Diving Unit Pacifics annual Turkey Run still managed to raise over $20,000 for the West Shore Christmas Hamper Fund.

The result means every family that receives a hamper this holiday season will also have a turkey on the table as part of their holiday feast.

The accomplishment is all the more impressive considering the unit, part of Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt, had a month to regroup after their regular main event, a 35-kilometre run through Langford and Colwood, was cancelled.

Fundraising plans hit a roadblock this year when West Shore RCMP was forced to pull their traffic support for the run due to budget restrictions, having allo-cated extra resources to security after separate targeted attacks saw two mili-tary members killed in Ottawa and Que-bec in October.

1 1/2 lbs ground beef1 egg, beaten1/2 cup oatmeal1 onion, chopped1/2 cup carrots, shredded1 tsp salt1/2 tsp black pepper1/2 tsp oregano1/2 tsp thyme

KETCHUP TOPPING

1/2 cup ketchup3 tbsp brown sugar1 1/2 tbsp prepared mustard

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350F.

2. Lightly grease a 9x 5 loaf pan. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, oatmeal, chopped onion, carrots, and seasonings. Form mixture into a loaf and place in the prepared pan. Cover top of uncooked meat loaf with ketchup mixture.

3. Bake 1 1/2 hours. Remove from oven, slice, and serve.

Backpack drop-offwith Colwood yard waste

The City of Colwoods branch drop-off program is taking more than just yard waste this month.

Colwood residents dropping off yard waste through the free program are also encouraged to drop off items for the Christmas Backpack Project, an initiative giving back-packs filled with donations to the homeless for Christmas. The initia-tive was started by Colwood resident Niki Ottosen in 2008.

Blankets, sleeping bags, toiletry items, ready-to-eat foods, under-wear, long johns, warm winter socks, compact umbrellas, scarves, hats and toques are being collected at the municipal yard.

Acceptable yard waste includes branches of a maximum diameter of four inches, plus grass clippings and leaves. The next drop-off date is Dec. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3300 Wishart Rd. The program is for Colwood residents only and drop off is free.

Spirits are fineat coffee house

The coffee house at the Historic Caleb Pike House in Highlands will be filled this Saturday (Dec. 13) with the sounds of Fine Spirits, a six-piece band covering danceable music ranging from classic rock to funk, R & B, pop and jazz.

The event starts with an open mic at 7:30 p.m. at 1589 Millstream Rd. Tickets are $5 with children under the age of 15 free.

Road closure approved in View Royal

Mayor and council approved the last step in a road closure and removal of highway dedication for part of Cheam Road, off of Chilco Road, in View Royal at a council meeting Tuesday.

The move was approved by the Ministry of Transportation and Infra-structure on Nov. 14, and will relo-cate the road to accommodate a new residential development by Vic-torias Limona Group.

There are still administrative steps to be taken before any work is begun, said Kim Anema, Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of View of Royal, and he added that traffic should not be overly impacted.

Three hundred purple and blue chairs line the floors of the Isabelle Reader Theatre.

Faded, stained and torn, they can no longer be cleaned, many no longer spring back up when empty and one seat has even fallen off the hinges completely, replaced by a makeshift plas-tic chair. The 300-seat theatre at Spencer middle school is clearly in need of a facelift.

The chairs are in a sad state of disrepair, but when we looked at bids, the cost of repairing them all at once was just too great, said musical theatre

director Sandy Webster-Worthy. But lots of people have con-nections at that theatre and the (Repair a Chair program) gives an opportunity to have tangible evidence of that connection.

The program sells off each individual chair for $225, which is the cost to remove, reuphol-ster, apply an engraved com-memorative plaque and rein-stall it. Webster-Worthy hopes the public steps up to purchase a piece of community, a piece her son, actor Calum Worthy, has already purchased.

He was there from the time he was four until the time he graduated and he still flies up to emcee the shows here if the schedule permits for him, she said of her son, a Disney-con-nected actor with numerous screen theatre credits. Its an example of someone who has a very successful film and televi-sion career and got their start

there. Its significant that he doesnt forget.

Webster-Worthy hopes to see a lot more use of the 37-year-old theatre from groups that include Four Seasons Theatre, PACE Musical Theatre and numerous other dance, music and school programs for years to come.

Structurally, it is a very good little theatre. (Its) well designed, has a good lighting system and good sound system and good sight lines. The skeleton is there, its just old and tired, she said. It really is worth looking at bringing it a little more up to date Its a good space and I think new seats will make a dif-ference.

One hundred seats were reupholstered 10 years ago, but 200 others are badly in need of repair. Alvira Plett, who works in administration for the middle school, also hopes the commu-

nity will get involved in the proj-ect.

Anyone looking for a com-memoration for themselves or a loved one can help repair a chair for the (theatre) she said. That stays on there for life and makes the theatre look better.

The theatre is a source of pride for many children and families who grew up perform-ing there and attending shows, said Plett. The goal is to com-plete the project by April.

It gives people a sense of the history of the building, gener-ally a lot of people have a lot of good memories in that theatre, Webster-Worthy said. The response (to the campaign)has been tremendous, because people have that connection. It is not just a strict physical space, it is organic and breath-ing and brings the community together.

Nominations are pouring in for the 15thannual Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards, set for Jan. 22 at the Westin Bear Mountain Resort in Langford.

Instead, the fleet diving unit held a barbecue at Millstream Village on Saturday in partner-ship with Everything Wine, with volunteers cycling on stationary bikes and others canvassing the crowd for donations. And on Sunday, nearly 70 people took to the track at Belmont secondary to do a relay style run, with par-ticipants switching off as they tired.

We didnt have that begin-ning-to-finish goal, so we had a group of people running all day, said Walter Dubeau, one of the founders of the Turkey Run and a training officer for the diving unit.

Im very proud of the girls and guys at the fleet diving unit here. If I didnt have all these people, this event wouldnt hap-pen.

The community has been extremely supportive of the event since its inception five years ago, he added.

We put it out there and everybody stepped up and got it going. We raise the money, but

they give it. I have a list of over 50 businesses that gave us dona-tions for the Turkey Run.

The event has raised $97,870 over the last five years, and theres still time for the unit to break the $100,000 threshold; theyre accepting donations until Jan. 1.

Dubeaus drive to make a dif-ference in the community is pal-pable, and contagious. Come

Witnesses sought in suspicious fire

West Shore RCMP is asking for the publics help solving a suspicious fire that occurred last month.

In the early morning of Saturday, Nov. 1, police and the Langford Fire Department responded to a call of a Kenworth dump truck on fire at a construction site on Walfred Road near Jacklin Road in Langford. The trucks cab was destroyed.

Fire investigators determined the blaze was not a result of a mechanical condition.

Cougars, panthers, mountain lions whatever you call them they are big scary cats.

The farmers of Metchosin have dealt with cougars and their appetites since arriving. Most of the farms in Metchosin were mixed holdings, which carried dairy and beef cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens and tur-keys along with the horses and dogs to manage them. The most important and numerous were the sheep and the saying was, if all else fails, the sheep will pay down the mortgage.

Fluffy, plump sheep are like marshmallows on the cougars buffet table. The farmer might put bells on them so that when they ran he could grab his gun and dogs and hope to prevent a kill, but the terrain was rough and vast and the flocks not always within hearing range.

Every past and present farmer has cougar kill and hunting sto-ries.

Its now the government game warden that the farmer calls to track the killer, but for years the call would go to Joan Yates, the Cougar Queen. She would pile

her hounds into her truck and set off to find the culprit, usually successfully.

However, it is the childrens stories that are impressive. Today when there is a cougar sighting the schools are locked down and people dont venture into the streets. Our ancestors through necessity were more self-reliant.

As a child in the 1870s, George Brown lived near what is now Klahanni Drive and would walk with his gun over Mount Metchosin to school. If he shot a deer on the Happy Valley side, he would dress it and hang it to take home, but if he shot a deer on the Metchosin side he would take it to school to share with those families.

One day, as an adult, Brown had no firearm when their dogs treed a cougar. His eight-year-old boy was sent home to fetch the hired man and a rifle.

The cougar came down the tree and his daughter Ellen threw her hat at it, which the cat shredded before the dogs treed it again. The hired man was so shaken he couldnt shoot the beast, so Ellen grabbed the rifle and killed it with one shot. It became the first cougar exhibit in the Provincial Museum (founded 1886).

Mary Pimm (nee Parker) tells of her brothers dog tree-ing a cougar while herding cows. Noel shot and wounded the cat that fell from the tree and attacked his dog. Noel was so angry he kicked the cougar in its face. His father shot the cougar but Noel suffered nightmares for years, but said wouldnt you kick a cougar if it was hurting your dog?
