SASS recognition Week runs from
Monday 9 to Friday 13 September.
This year’s theme is “School Administrative & Support Staff: Vital to Education”.
Every day of the school year SAS Staff face new challenges in the running of our public schools and the provision of the quality
education which our children will need for life during this century. They are constantly adapting to change so that our children
can have the best education possible.
SAS Staff are a dedicated group of professional workers who are often overlooked in the school setting. Recognition Week
gives the whole school the opportunity to demonstrate to SAS Staff that they are valued members of the school community.
Recently some staff were recognised for their years of service. Woolgoolga High was very proud to recently celebrate with
Lorraine Keegan who has clocked up 50 years of service! Lorraine commenced her service at Visual Arts Library at Burwood
followed by Campbelltown East Public School and Ambervale Public School before arriving at Woogloolga High in 2001. Lor-
raine has seen many changes unfold over the years particularly in the area of information technology.
SAS Staff at Woolgoolga High include a farm and a general assistant, office administration, science, library, kitchen assistants
and support learning officers including an Aboriginal Education officer. During this week of recognition, SAS Staff will join oth-
er local schools at an early morning breakfast.
As we draw towards the end of Term the school has been able to provide many extra curricula activities to acknowledge our very tal-ented students.
On Tuesday 27th August another highly successful Concert of Excel-lence was staged to showcase the talent of our students in the per-forming arts. This event provides a meaningful audience experience for our HSC students to practice for their upcoming performance ex-aminations. Congratulations and thanks to our Music and wider Per-forming Arts Staff who dedicate much time and energy in providing our students with this valuable experience.
It is pleasing to see that the vast majority of our students follow our requests to wear full school uniform . As a result our students are able to enjoy the activities offered in practi-cal classrooms by meeting the Work, Health and Safety requirements of wearing fully en-closed leather footwear. We appreciate the effort made by students and their families in wearing our uniform with pride.
Staff and students also enjoyed a very successful disco on Wednesday the 4th Septem-ber where students celebrated a colourful theme and acknowledged that the time was drawing close for Year 12 to complete their formal studies with us.
The HSC examinations begin on 14th October 2013 and the final exam will be completed on 6th November 2013. We wish our graduating students a pleasant end of term as they select their university placement preferences and finalise their study programs.
This week on the school’s weekly assembly we announced the results of our recent ballot for our new Prefect group for 2014. Congratulations goes to all candidates. It is wonderful to see that our school continues to develop leadership qualities in our youth.
Many thanks also goes to the continuing support of the Woolgoolga Rotary Club in the Getting Out There Day joint initiative. This unique was held on 30th August at Opal Cove Resort and prepares graduating students in making the transition from school to prepar-ing for life beyond school.
At this time of year we acknowledge our wonderful SAS (School Administrative & Support Staff) which include a farm and a general assistant, office administration, science, library, kitchen assistants and support learning officers including an Aboriginal Education officer). Staff and students greatly value their support of our educational programs and activities. A special acknowledgement goes to Lorraine Keegan for 50 years of outstanding service and support to the students of New South Wales.
Until next time

On Friday 23rd August the Year Six students of Mullaway, Sandy
Beach, Woolgoolga and Corindi Primary Schools attend-
ed a Transition Day at Corindi sportsground to meet each other in
preparation for beginning high school next year.
The day involved combining all students into teams and playing
Peterson ball, a modified T Ball game. At the end of the day all the
Year Six students were introduced to Mr Henderson, the 2014 Year 7
Deputy Principal, Mr Cook Head Teacher Welfare and Miss Hansen the
2014 Year 7 Year Adviser.
Sixteen Year 10 Woolgoolga High School students attended the day with Miss Hansen to help the primary schools by umpir-
ing the games.
All of our students did an exceptional job with their leadership and
umpiring efforts to make the games as enjoyable and fun for the year six
students. The primary school teachers all commented on how great a
job our students did on the day.
It was a highly successful day and a great opportunity to showcase the
quality of students we have here at Woolgoolga High School.
Well done and thankyou to the following Year 10 students:

Della, Billy Ardvison, Brodie Pitsis, Eva Bromley, Brad Williams, Paul

Getting Out There Day is a joint initiative of the Woolgoolga Rotary Club and Wool-
goolga High School. It assists young people in making the transition from being a HSC student, to preparing for a life beyond school. Many activities were scheduled for the day, held on 30th August at Opal Cove Resort Coffs Harbour. A huge thankyou to Mrs Hart and Mrs Schol-ten for organising the day. The feedback from the students on the success of the day was ex-tremely positive, and in evaluating the day it was clear that all students not only enjoyed the day but also took with them many of the skills necessary for life after school. Colour groups rotated between the four activities, with a range of never-seen-before present-ers in the Getting Out There Day format. A scrumptious morning tea and nutritious lunch was enjoyed by all. Many of the students had stories to tell after experiencing each workshop. Young People and Risk Taking
Risk-taking in adolescence it is an essential part of learning and personal development. Every healthy adolescent takes risks as he or she grows towards independence. Most researchers agree that if there is no risk there is no growth. A common problem for some young people is their inability to evaluate the potential risks and consequences of everyday behaviour. Thrill seeking, speeding, the desire to impress one’s friends; feelings of invincibility and the search for new experiences are all motivating forces that drive many teenagers. As a result they are over represented
in every category of risk taking resulting in injury and trauma.
The RRISK Program aims to reduce risk-taking behaviour associated with alcohol and drug use, driving and partying amongst year 11 students in the North and Mid North Coast of NSW. RRISK is relevant to the social life, develop-mental stage and concerns of adolescents. It extends the school based drug education and road safety curriculum by providing opportunities for senior high school students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills to reduce risk
taking and develop safer celebrating strategies.
Over 4500 students from more than 59 high schools from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads have registered to attend one of 10 RRISK Seminars. This year, two additional seminars will be held in Port Macquarie and Kempsey to meet the growing demand. If you have a year 11 student in your family, encourage them to attend.
RRISK seminar dates
Port Macquarie Panthers Auditorium 7 and 8 November
Coffs Harbour Southern Cross University 14 and 15 November
Kempsey Melville High Community Hall 20 November
Lismore Southern Cross University 25, 26 and 28 November
Tweed Heads: Twin Town Services Club 5 and 6 December
Research shows that RRISK is effective in reducing young driver crashes by 44%
The largest study ever undertaken into young driver behaviour was conducted by the George Institute of International Health and published in 2009. RRISK was identified as the only program to have resulted in a 44% reduction in road crashes for participants. The researchers consider RRISK a best practice program because it builds resilience by equipping young people with strategies and practical skills to manage risks in their social life and on the roads as
drivers and passengers.
Look for information about the RRISK Program on the RRISK website www.rrisk.com.au and in this newslet-ter over the coming weeks.

Students of Woopi High had a great
time dressed as colours of the rubik’s
cube on 4th September in the school
hall. The disco was held as a celebra-
tion for students on positive merits
and to farewell year 12 as this was
their last disco.
Year 12 dressed up as sugar-skulls,
with theatre paint and all. Funds
raised went toward the Year 12
school present to be unveiled at the
Year 12 Graduation Assembly to be
held on the last day of this term.
After four discos held and organised
by Year 12 they will be handing over
the reigns to the new Prefects elected
earlier this week. Good luck to year
12 for their exams next term and the
new 2014 leaders of Woolgoolga
