Stewardship Reflection Nov 14th

“And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’ with great power and glory.” (Mark 13:26)

We will all have that day when we are standing before God and our life is played out like a movie. When this happens and God asks each of us, “What have you done with the gifts that I have given you?” How will you respond? The good news – it’s never too late to live and grateful and generous lifestyle.

Word of Life Nov 14th

“We can’t imagine loving a child whom we conceived more than we love Andrew. It is amazing how he fits our personalities so well… Adopting Andrew has made us more aware of God’s power and of His love for us. We realize that He always has a perfect plan for our lives.”

Women in the New Evangelization

W.I.N.E. is a fun book club for women to experience the Bible through reading and discussion. This book

is a six-week scripture study following the infancy and early years of Christ as seen through the eyes of Mary and other familiar and imagined women in the

gospels. There are two opportunities: Monday with Sarah Reed or Thursday with Jessica Mayer from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Contact the office for more information or to join one of these groups. Participants need to purchase their own book.

Time to clean out that storage room!

The St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store truck will be coming to Good Shepherd on Saturday, December 11. The truck will be available for donations from 8 am until 12 pm on that day. Items must be saleable for the Thrift Stores and free of dirt, rips, burns and not broken.

Unacceptable items include: encyclopedias, carpeting, exercise equipment, wheelchairs, walkers, exercise bikes, sleeper sofas, mattresses, box springs, secretary desks, tube and rear projection TVs, car seats, unframed mirrors and medical equipment. Working appliances are acceptable if less than 10 years old.

Our parish St. Vincent de Paul conference re-ceives credit from the donated items that can be used to help the needy of our area. God Bless.

We are in the process of organizing and reactivating

our Good Shepherd Scouting Program. The pro-

gram is opened to all boys and girls of our school,

parish and community. We are looking for Good

Shepherd parents,

grandparents and any

scouting alumni to help

us get this important pro-

gram flourishing again in

our parish and communi-

ty. We are in need of

teers. Please contact the

GOD’S REIGN By pointing to the end times, today’s readings speak to the coming reign of God, when God will make all things new. In Christ, this time has already begun. We, by our energized watchfulness, can further God’s reign. We can heal broken hearts, free captives, spread the Good News. Even so, the reign of God will not be complete without the second coming of Christ. Our weekly eucharistic gathering is a sign of the fullness of the end times. At Mass we join as an assembly to recall and to claim the story of Jesus as our own. Together we give thanks to God for the many gifts bestowed upon us. We receive nourishment in the simple but profound meal. And our weak and weary selves are invigorated and transformed by the power of Christ, so that we ourselves might become effective signs of God’s reign present and to come.

We pray for the repose of the soul of Thad Niemira, father of Helen Conway, who died Saturday, November 6th. May the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Thanks to everyone who helped with the reception for Archbishop Rozanski on October 31st. It is a rare opportunity to have the St. Louis shepherd celebrate Mass at Good Shepherd and you made his visit warm and inviting. A special thanks to Matt Collins and the youth group for all the hard work they put in cook-ing and serving brunch. You are a wonderful example of Christian service.

How rude! … Not really...

Have you noticed people writing during the Homily and won-dered why they aren't paying attention? Well, they are listening very closely and taking notes encounter Christ more deeply in scripture. This practice is becoming much more common and there are several ways you can join this movement. The “Every Sacred Sunday Mass Journal” for the 2021-2022 Liturgical year (Nov. 28, 2021-Nov. 20, 2022) is available now. It has Mass readings, ample space for notes or journaling, pray-ers for the Order of the Mass, and liturgically color-coded tabs in a hardcover binding. The individual price is $44.95, but bundle pricing is available so gather your friends and order in bulk to kick-start your Ad-vent journey. Order online at: https://everysacredsunday.com/shop.

If you know of someone in need of prayers, email [email protected] or call the church office.

Do you receive the weekly emails from the office? They contain lots of useful information about activities going on in the parish. You must sign up at mygoodshepherd.com (we don’t use email addresses in our database). Speaking of database, Steve is very appreciative of the 40+ families that returned the parish registration forms to make sure we have the most current information. In our technological world with online giving and email, sometimes we forget to update our physical address and phone number. Please return the form or call Steve to make sure we know how to reach you.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week might be a good time to stock our spiritual cupboard along with our kitchen cupboard in preparation for our celebration of Thanksgiving. Before there was a Thanksgiving Day, even before there were Pilgrims, the Roman Catholic Church celebrated Ember Days (“change-of-season days”) as periods of thanksgiving for seasonal harvests. This means it is a customary Catholic way to give thanks to God through prayer, fasting, and almsgiv-ing. In the 1969 reformed calendar it was left up to the national conferences of bishops to set dates for Ember Days. (The ones on the old calendar fit a Mediterranean climate, and on the new calendar it was imagined that each nation knew best when to schedule such seasonally oriented days.) The United States bishops have not yet resurrected Ember Days, Rogations Days, and other national days of prayer. However, tucked within Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers (a book published by the U. S. bishops) is a chapter on Ember Days that proposes, among others, the three days before Thanksgiving as days of prayer, charity, and fasting. Why wait for an official proclamation? Why not undertake to observe those three days in that way in your parish, or even in your family? What could be more natural at this time of year? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
