Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Among our parish goals is to promote vocations that build up the Church including Christian marriage, religious life and priesthood. To this end, we have begun to offer revised marriage preparation and marriage enrichment programs. In addition, high school aged boys meet regularly in the parish to discern a priesthood vocation while young women gather to consider religious life. This weekend, as we observe

World Marriage Day, a married (or soon-to-be married) couple will speak briefly at each Mass to reflect on how important the Sacrament of Matrimony is in their lives. This is another way I hope to strengthen the understanding of and appreciation for the Sacrament of Matrimony among our younger parishioners. Priests will impart a bless-ing of married couples at the conclusion of the Prayer of the Faithful. (2) As we begin the season of Lent this coming Wednesday, I pray that all members of the parish may be renewed as disciples of Jesus Christ by their Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Notice how the Lenten renewal of every individual Christian is also a blessing for the world around us. As each of us grows in faith, hope and love, we help make the world more peaceful, more attentive to the needy, and more aware of God’s merciful plan for all creatures. This is an especially important time for five adults and three children in our parish who are preparing for Baptism and/or Confirmation and First Communion at Easter time. (3) During this Lenten season, we will often make use of various options provided by the Roman Missal: for example, the Missal does not require a concluding hymn even though the practice is common in most American parishes. However, the Missal does provide for a “psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn” to be sung after the distribution of Communion. We will follow that practice once again at many Masses during Lent. A Prayer Over the People extends the final blessing; it is required on Ash Wednesday and all Sunday Masses during Lent; it is optional at other Lenten Masses. After the Dismissal, liturgies will then conclude in silence or with instrumental music. It is my hope that the change in routine will serve to draw attention to our common and personal penitential Lenten practices. (4) Next to my weekly message on the first page of the bulletin, we are printing a parish calendar of Lenten events in Good Shepherd Parish. You may want to cut it out and tape it to your fridge as a reminder. We will update it weekly. (5) Good Shepherd parishioners contributed over $4,587 to Catholic Relief Services using Rice Bowls last year. Operation Rice Bowl is a popular Lenten activity for many Catholics. Kits will be blessed and distri-buted during Masses this weekend. The kits help facilitate fasting & almsgiving; they include a cardboard make-your-own “bowl” for collecting contributions during the Lenten season. Each kit comes with a Lenten calendar, recipes from other countries and prayer suggestions. We will collect the contributions at the end of Lent and forward donations to support the work of Catholic Relief Services around the world. (6) Time to Sign Up! We are offering a marriage preparation program for engaged couples beginning Saturday, February 17. If you are planning to marry in the Catholic Church (in our parish or elsewhere), or know a couple who intend to do so, contact the parish office for more information. (7) A possible “Joy in Action” for this week based on Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation on the joy of the family, Amorus Laetitiae: For Valentine’s Day, take a trip down memory lane with your spouse and recall some of your most cherished moments together. (8) Thank You of the Week: To those who advertise in our weekly bulletin. Please let them know you saw their ad in these pages. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 8 - Msgr. Tonne: Over the back yard fence one mother asked another: “Did you have a nice Valentine’s Day?” “Sure did,” gushed the second mother, “my son in college sent me a great big package.” “What was in it?” asked the first mother. The second mother exclaimed: “His dirty laundry – but he put it in a heart-shaped box.”

LENT 2018

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14. During Lent, the decoration of the altar with flowers is not permitted, and musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to the singing. Excep-tions include Laetare Sunday, solemnities & feasts.

Lenten Fast & Abstinence: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (March 30) are days of fast and absti-nence from meat. Also in the USA, every Friday of Lent is a day of abstinence from meat. Catholics aged 18 and over are bound by the law of fasting until their 59th birthday. The law of abstinence binds Catholics ages 14 and older.

Ashes for the Sick: Ashes will be distributed during the Ash Wednesday Masses or Liturgies of the Word. Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion may bring blessed ashes to the sick and those con-fined to their homes. If a minister is not available, a family member or another person may carry the ashes. Blessed ashes will be available after Ash Wednesday liturgies; bring a small container to transport them. You may also pick up a special prayer (French & English) to help you impose the ashes in an appropriate way.

CRS RICE BOWL Distribution: This weekend Rice Bowls will be blessed during Mass and distributed 1 per family as

you leave church. During Lent, may our FASTING be a hunger for justice, our ALMSGIVING an offering for peace,

and our PRAYERS the reflection of humble and grateful hearts.

We appreciate all the prayers & support on behalf of our catechumens, who are preparing for the three Sacraments of Initiation and our

Baptized candidates, who are seeking full communion in the Catholic Church. Please note that we will be in attendance at the 6:30 pm Mass at St. Margaret Church on Wed., Feb. 14 for Reception of the Ashes.

Our Lenten Prayer Tree will remain in the Gathering Space of Most Holy Trinity Church during the holy

season of Lent. All parishioners are invited to write an intention or prayer on a leaf and place it on the tree.

These will be remembered each day of Lent by our faith community, and will serve as a visual reminder of our spiritual connection with one

another and our hope in the healing grace of Christ.

Palms for Ashes: Good Shepherd Parish collects used palms and burns them to make the next year’s ashes for Ash Wednesday.

This assures us that our palms will be recycled in a liturgically correct manner. From now through Easter weekend, there will be

receptacles for your palms in the entry ways of each of our churches. Thank you for your help.
