Newsletter Volume 36, #1 January 1, 2017

Last month, on the third Sunday of Advent as we lit the Shepherd’s Candle, the Spirit of God moved mightily in First Baptist Cornelia. One by one, we came to the altar in prayer for God’s Spirit to create in us a passion for proclaiming Jesus. It was a holy moment that will live in the memory of our church. It was a holy moment for me as well. This experience changed me.

For almost 5 years we have been walking by faith as a church praying and preparing for God’s Spirit to break out in us. This is happening now. While I don’t understand the ways of the Spirit and definitely cannot control it, my task as your pastor is to tell the story of its infusion into our church and invite each of us to participate. Let me invite you to be praying God’s Spirit to break out in your life!

This infusion of the Spirit of God comes as we are making some significant steps in our organization as a congregation at the beginning of 2017.

Beginning on Sunday, January 8, our children’s ministry will have its own space in our church on the first floor of the Family Ministry Center. On that Sunday, all parents are invited to park on Larkin Street (City Hall side) and enter into the Family Ministry Center. Our children’s ministry greeters will welcome you and invite you to check-in your preschool or elementary child. I’m confident your children will love their new space.

If you don’t have children in the children’s ministry, I hope that you will take time to come downstairs and see the new rooms.

One of the ways that First Baptist Cornelia loves the world as God loves us is by ADVANCING THE KINGDOM OF GOD. We advance the Kingdom of God by “Increasing our mission opportunities across all generations in order to develop a holistic, evangelical lifestyle within our church, risking ourselves for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus in our community and around the world.”

A couple of years ago we asked ourselves what this might look like in our church by the year 2018. Here’s part of that description.

“In 2018 FBC Cornelia will be known in our community, state and beyond as a leader in missional outreach, not because of all the missions activities and opportunities that our church does or supports (even though there are plenty), but because “mission” is at the heart of who we are. As we strive to “love the world, the way God loves us“, missions is embedded in all we do. Every member of our church family is immersed in a comprehensive missions education program for all age groups. This program is embedded in small group and traditional Sunday School curriculum, children’s Sunday school, youth group teaching, sermons, and other discipleship training. It is apparent to everyone who knows anything about FBC that missions is not something we do, it is who we are.”

During the month of January, we will start a new, annual season in worship and the life of the church designed to challenge us to be, give, pray and give to missions over the coming year. We will host special missionaries to speak in worship. We will invite mission partners from our community to speak. We will highlight the mission efforts of our church. We want every member of FBC to find their place in helping us Advance the Kingdom of God. And there is A PLACE for everyone’s gift and passion.

Make worship and church life a priority this January. See what God can do in your life and through your life to change the world.

We are excited to watch as the new children's ministry area begins in Jan-uary. We are also excited as we seek to develop a new space for our historical displays. The History Commit-tee welcomes your thoughts and suggestions to make the new History Center one that will continue to tell our story in the years ahead. Please share with us your ideas. A WORD from Pastor John: Recently I came across this article dealing with New

Years resolutions from a Christian perspective. This is some great advice as we begin a new year of growing as disciples here at FBC – I love how these begin with a clear emphasis on PRAYER!“The practice of making New Year’s resolutions goes back over 3,000 years to the ancient Babylonians. There is just something about the start of a new year that gives us the feeling of a fresh start and a new beginning. In reality, there is no difference between December 31 and January 1. Nothing mystical occurs at midnight on December 31. The Bible does not speak for or against the concept of New Year’s resolutions. However, if a Christian determines to make a New Year’s resolution, what kind of resolution should he or she make?

Here are some suggestions: (1) pray to the Lord for wisdom (James 1:5) in regards to what resolutions, if any, He would have you make; (2) pray for wisdom as to how to fulfill the goals God gives you; (3) rely on God’s strength to help you; (4) find an accountability partner who will help you and encourage you; (5) don’t become discouraged with occasional failures; instead, allow them to motivate you further; (6) don’t become proud or vain, but give God the glory. Psalm 37:5-6 says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”

RIGHT NOW MEDIA is a great resource for ALL of us to grow in our walk with Christ. Many of you should have received an email during the month of December inviting you to join under our church account. If you did not receive that email, please send me an email at [email protected] and I will make sure you have access. To find out more about this, go to www.rigntnow.org.

LISTEN UP during the month of January to learn more about some new ways you will be able to grow in your walk with Christ here at FBC this year.

Knowledge is a response to the character of God.

When kids turn about four years old they start asking, “Why?” It’s like

suddenly a switch flips and they begin to string together their questions in an attempt to understand everything around them. And this continues throughout life.God designed people in such a unique way—different from the rest of creation—to pursue finding the answers to life’s hidden secrets. The very fact that we naturally pursue knowledge is proof that there is a God. It’s actu-ally genius that God would make us in such a way that we are always discovering, wondering, exploring, innovating, improving, and solving. The most important thing you can do for young kids is to invite them into the story about a really big God. It’s a story that will always be bigger than they can explain or imagine, but God invites them to spend a lifetime discov-ering who He is and how He loves them.Jesus helps us know God better. If you want to know who God is and how God loves, look to Jesus. When Jesus stepped foot onto the planet, God was once and for all with us. John writes this about Je-sus, The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. It is the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father. And the Word was full of grace and truth. (John 1:14, NIrV) As we dig deeper into the story of Jesus, we discover more about how God desires a relationship with us and invites us to help Him spread the message of Jesus throughout the world. To do that, we need to know God through Jesus. That’s why we think it’s important for us to help our kids and families discover more about knowledge—discover-ing something new so you can be better at whatever you do. We will spend the month of January taking a closer look at the way knowledge shows up throughout the Gospels.January 29 – Empty Bowls Luncheon

Pastor Eric Spivey

I am grateful to Amber Miller, our Minister of Children and Outreach Ministries, our children’s ministry committee, our church use committee, our building and grounds committee, our Tuesday crew, our history committee, our cold weather shelter ministry, and our deacons for helping guide this transition. Our children have shared space with our whole church for a long time, it is exciting to see them with their own space on our church campus.

The next stage of this transition will begin in January. With your guidance we will begin exploring the best ways we can utilize the four rooms on the main floor of our hallway. We will have the opportunity to discuss ways these spaces can bring our church together, provide easy access for education space, and best tell our history and story on our main hallway. We will finalize the days and times for these discussions at the first of the month.

There will be other significant, organizational steps in our church this year that will not be as visible.

• Our Budget/Stewardship/Finance Committee will begin developing a new budgeting system with our committees and staff in January.

• Our deacons will begin working more closely with all of our committees and ministry teams during their leadership meetings in the year.

• Our Bylaws Committee will be working to update our bylaws during the year.

• Our deacons will be examining a new deacon election process.

These are just a few of the ways we hope to be improving and growing as a church.

I am greatly aware that the Spirit of God is showing up exactly at the moment of some of our greatest change as a church. This is no accident or coincidence. God knows how difficult change is for everyone – even pastors. The Spirit is here to remind us why we change in the first place – so that we can proclaim Jesus more clearly and powerfully than ever before. Please join me in praying for Cornelia First Baptist this year. Together, infused with God’s Spirit, we will advance the Kingdom of God.

I’ll be out of the pulpit January 1st and Pastor John will be preaching. I’ll see you Sunday, January 8th!

MUSIC AND ARTS IN WORSHIP Thank you to everyone who helped make our worship experiences beautiful and meaningful during Advent. It was the desire of our Worship Design Team to help you “get ready for Christmas” through the many opportunities of worship. Thanks to Jane Ferguson for coordinating the project of writing and printing our Advent Devotional Book. Twenty-five of our own church family members wrote devotionals to help us prepare for Christmas. Janis Stapleton and her crew were responsible for the gorgeous decorations in the sanctuary as members and guests entered for worship services. Beautiful music was shared by our children’s choirs, Sanctuary Choir, soloists, and instrumentalists to lead us in worship. A message of preparing for Christmas was wonderfully shared through drama in “Getting Ready for Christmas” with scenes each Sunday of Advent. Many thanks to the talented performers directed by Sally Higgins to help us realize that “getting ready for Christmas” is really not about cleaning and decorating our houses and buying gifts, but preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus and committing our lives to Him. Combining all of these elements of worship with the powerful messages of God’s Word preached by Pastor Eric, we had the wonderful experience of “getting ready for Christmas”! I pray it was a meaningful season of worship for all of you. Are you prepared to share the gospel message and “go tell it on the mountain”? As we begin the new year, commit to finding ways you can share the hope, peace, joy, and love of our Savior. I challenge all of us to worship daily and share our faith in 2017.

Blessings in the New Year! Bobby
