Over the past six or so months the sub-ject of abuse and/or domestic violence has been propelled into the limelight by mainstream media.

AbuSIvE RElAtIonShIPby Debroah Wiggins

Truth is it did not just begin, but rather has been happening forever. Suddenly, profes-sional athletes are being made an example of and losing their jobs due to their personal issues with abuse in their relationships with their children, spouses and significant oth-ers. However, there are doctors, lawyers, judges, CEO’s of major corporations and regular everyday men who are abusing their spouses and families every day. Abuse does not care about your age, gender, race or how much or little money you make. The majority of abuse that is perpetrated in heterosexual relationships is most often per-petrated by men against women. However, abuse occurs at similar rates in same-sex relationships and can also be perpetrated by women against men.

When we think of abuse, we think of black eyes, bruises and broken bones. Abuse often escalates to physical violence; it does not start out that way. In fact, abusers are often charming, attentive, and sweet in the beginning. Initially, an abuser will make you feel so special, appreciated and loved. You will not realize that you are being manipu-lated until it’s too late. The truth is there are warning signs and regardless of gender or sexual orientation we all deserve to be safe. No one deserves to be abused.

So, the question is, how do we attack this problem? I believe we do it through educa-tion. And we have to begin having this con-versation with our daughters very early so they are aware. There are warning signs to help us spot an abusive relationship before it gets out of control.

6 Early Warning Signs of an Abusive Rela-tionship.

1. He will most likely be the most romantic man you have ever met. He will buy you flowers and gifts. He will pay attention to you and make you feel special and wanted. You may find yourself thinking that he is too good to be true -- because he is. He needs you to trust him and develop feelings for him, because it is much easier to control someone who loves you. He will make you feel like you are his entire world -- because he wants your world to revolve around him. Of course, just being romantic is not neces-sarily a sign of abuse. But, an abuser will often use these gifts and romance to distract you from other concerning behaviors, such

as control and jealousy.

2. He will want to commit -- quickly. He will say that it’s love at first sight, that you are made for each other, and that he can’t imagine his life without you. He will sweep you off your feet, and tell you he hasnever loved anyone this much. He will insist on being exclusive right away, and will likely want to move in together, or even get mar-ried, very quickly. He needs you to love him, and to belong to him. You may feel like the relationship is moving too quickly -- trust your instincts.

3. He will want you all to himself. He will glare at other men for looking at you and question you about your male friends. You may think this jealousy is cute, or even loving -- at first. But soon, he’ll make you feel guilty for spending time with friends or family. He will call or text you several times a day, and may accuse you of flirting or cheating. He will say he loves you so much he can’t stand the thought of anyone else being near you. And soon, no one else will be. This is the beginning of isolation.

4. He will be very concerned about you. He may get upset if you don’t call him back right away or if you come home late. He will say it’s because he worries about you. He will start to question who you saw, where you went, and what you were doing. He will mask his control as concern for your well-being. He will start to make decisions for you -- who you spend time with and where you go -- and claim to know what’s best for you. Soon, you’ll be asking his ap-proval for every decision. Your control over your own life will slip away, as his power and control grows.

5. He will be sweet and caring -- some-times. He will be the sweet, loving man who everyone else sees, and who you fell in love with. But, sometimes, he will become the man who puts you down, makes you feel guilty, and isolates you. He will make you believe that if you just did something differ-ently, loved him more, or treated him better, he would be that sweet, loving man all the time. You will stay because of your hope for the man you love, but will spend most of your time being controlled by the man who hurts you. Eventually, you won’t be able to tell the difference.

6. He will play the victim. If he gets in trouble at work, it’s someone else’s fault. If he has a bad day, someone is out to get him. And if he is upset, he will blame you for his feelings and actions. He will expect you to make him happy and fulfilled -- and when he’s not, he will blame you. He may apologize for yelling, putting you down, or hurting you, but will always find a way to make it your fault. He will say things like, “It’s just that I love you so much,” or “I wish you didn’t make me so crazy.” Eventually, he will blame you for making him hit you. If these warning signs are happening in your relationship, even if he has not hit you (yet), this is abuse. Manipulation, control, jealousy, and isolation are not love. Abusive behavior will get progressively worse over time. No matter how hard you try, or how much you love him you cannot change him. This man may seem like your dream come true today; but soon, he will become your worst nightmare. You deserve better. You deserve to be safe and respected. Get out before it is too late.

bIShoP AllEn wIggInSFINDING BALANCEWhen dreams are divinely inspired, developing them becomes the responsibility of the partnership forged between a man and his God. Bishop Allen T. D. Wiggins understands this well. Partnerships are paramount to the establishment and sustainability of anything. With dreams beyond himself, Bishop Wiggins is finding balance in synergistic networks; creating co-operatives, collaborations, and cohesive entities to significantly impact and progressively transform the community’s landscape. Gospel Now engages the heart of Bishop Allen T. D. Wiggins in a candid interview to discuss the man, his music, his ministry, his mission, and the mantle responsible for it all.

HOW DID ORLANDO BECOME HOME TO YOU?

Born in Daytona, my dad ended up being called to a church in Orlando back in the 70s. As a result of being called, we moved over. [I’ve] been over here since 7th grade, [attended] Howard Junior High School [and] Jones High School, was voted Mr. Jones High for the Class of 84. I graduated from FAMU with a BS in Pharmacy, and participated as a member of the widely acclaimed Marching 100.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO MOvE BACK TO ORLANDO?

My dad, the ministry was here. I always liked Orlando, it was more progressive than Daytona, and I had a lot of friends here. So I wanted to be back in Orlando.

DID YOU WORK IN PHARMACY ONCE YOU MOvED BACK TO ORLANDO?

Yes. I worked for Eckerd Drugs at the time, on John Young Parkway at Colonial, right where the Family Dollar used to be. Then I worked in Clermont, and afterwards became full time in the ministry.

SO YOUR PARENTS STARTED THE HOPE?

Yes, they started it in September 1983.

DID YOU ALWAYS HAvE PLANS TO GO INTO MINISTRY?

No. It was something I felt I was called to do but did not want to do.

When I went to college, I really wanted to be a medical doctor and that’s how I got into pharmacy. This guy told me if I went into pre-med vs. pharmacy, if I decided that I did not want to move forward at least I would have a pharmacy degree. At the same time my music career was taking off; and so the

10

Page 11: Gospel Now Magazine March Issue

Gospel Now |

music career and not wanting to continue with the education kind of led me to phar-macy.

AFTER YOU MOvED BACK TO ORLANDO, HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION INTO MINISTRY?

I finally accepted my calling in 1989, but even with the acceptance of the calling I really didn’t want to pastor. Just being honest with you, I didn’t see pastoring as a very progressive, prosperous career. Hav-ing served under my dad and seeing my dad and his brothers; they were all pastors, my dad’s dad was a pastor. Seeing all of that, I did not feel that the people really appreciated the sacrifice of a pastor and so I really did not want to go into that as a career. So, I’m practicing pharmacy and being called into ministry but not neces-sarily wanting to pastor. My dad calls me, “son will you come help me out for the summer? I don’t have much money to pay, but you have some vacation time, take two weeks and work with me at the church. I’ll pay you $500 dollars a week.” Five hun-dred dollars was really not much because I was making at that time a pharmacist’s salary, making $20+ /hour; but I took him up on that offer to come back to work with him full time for those two weeks. I never went back to pharmacy. So that’s how I transitioned.

I was reading that one of the first services at the Hope actually started in this building (Goldwyn Plaza).

Yes, it was started in this room. None of these walls were here, except for this one. We had about 55 to join that service. It started with 8 members and 55 joined that day. We moved from here (Goldwyn) to an Orange Blossom Trail storefront, then we moved from there to Orange Center, then to current our location.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’vE ExPERIENCED BEING IN THE MINISTRY?

Challenges, in our culture, in my opinion, the biggest challenge is change. Trying to get people to accept change, invest in change. Earlier in my career, not only having a vision but being able to cast it, and getting people to buy into it was a challenge. One of the hardest hurdles in getting across is the mindset of comfort. Breaking out of those comfort zones is the challenge.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT HAvE BEEN INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR DE-vELOPMENT?

My dad, he had an incredible faith and an incredible trust in God. He was probably my #1 mental model. So I think God gifted me with him in my life because he would push me and he would break me out when no one else would.

WHO WERE SOME OTHERS THAT HELPED IN SHAPING YOUR APPROACH?

Shaping my approach aside from my dad, is probably Archbishop LeRoy Bailey out of Hartford Connecticut. I really appreci-

ated his style of leadership, especially how men in particular honored him and saw him as a father. He taught me to stop leading, stop pastoring as a career and pastor out of a relationship. There are a couple of people from the business arena who have been good to be on my team. I believe you should surround yourself with strengths, so I’ve got a good team around me that kind of stretches me and makes sure there’s accountability in place.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE MUSIC BUSINESS?

I started playing piano in elementary, didn’t like it because I didn’t like my teacher. She had an interesting approach, every time you’d play a wrong note she’d take a ruler. So I had kind of a little abuse which turned me off, and I connected the teacher to the piano, when I really just needed a new teacher. I went from that to 7th grade at Sea Breeze in Daytona, and started playing the tuba. I was really skinny and I’d have to walk to school carrying this big old tuba. I went from there to playing the saxophone. I’ve played sax ever since. I played in church all throughout my time in junior high and high school, but then I heard of this guy named Bernard Johnson, he was playing at our national conventions. He kind of opened my eyes that I could be more than (just in a church band). So when I got to FAMU, having done a cassette tape at that time, I ran into a guy named Ben Tankard. Ben used to work at Main Street music store, and he was selling these Dx7 Yamaha Keyboards. I would go up there every day, bothering him, trying to get the price down. Then I found out he had a little studio. So I said to him, I play gospel jazz and he said I want to get into that, I’ve got a studio at the house. So I ended up going to the studio and he ended up being my producer. So that’s how my music career started. He ended up producing my first national CD and then from there he launched his music career and from there I launched Allen & Allen. It was first Allen T. D. Wiggins.

HOW MANY CDS HAvE YOU RECORDED?

I think we have 9, 9 or 10.

DO YOU EvER THINK ABOUT GOING BACK INTO MUSIC?

I’m thinking about doing another cd. My son is playing now, so I’m thinking of doing a reunion cd. Tell your listeners they can go to iTunes, tune core and check out the whole piece if they would like to.

DO YOU EvER GET NERvOUS WHEN YOU PERFORM?

Do I get nervous? I think there’s a healthy nervousness or excitement while perform-ing or preaching. I think it helps me to be careful to know I’m not doing it in and of myself and of my own strength. And then I’m excited because I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

I enjoy spending time with my family,

spending time with the boys. I play a little pool and I enjoy real estate development. It’s work for others but it’s a joy for me, to put together deals and develop properties that are abandoned and turn them into something that people want.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR PLANS THAT YOU HAvE FOR THE NExT PHASE OF THE HOPE PROJECT AND THIS COMMUNITY?

The next phase is to open a K-8 school which will launch this fall called UETA, it’s a STEM charter school. I’m excited about launching that school because our desire is to provide a cradle to career path pipeline education. So, I have my part in helping to make that happen along with several educators who are on the team. Probably after that, we want to build a cathedral on the campus. Those are some of the plans I have.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’vE FACED IN HELPING TO DEvELOP THIS AREA HERE IN ORLANDO?

One of the challenges is getting the community to buy in and to realize that my heart is sincere in wanting to see the area that we serve just as good, or better than any other area in Orlando. Overcoming the crab in the bucket mindset, and then also every building that we’ve had to purchase we’ve had to pay a premium. We’ve always had to pay more than what it was worth because it was occupied by someone who was not from this community, and did not have our values or was invested in our community. So, in order to recap-ture the asset I had to be willing to stand in the gap and sometimes that cost a premium. That’s a big chal-lenge because now you have to sell that to a banking system that only wants to lend up to a certain amount of appraised value. That’s a major challenge. After that, identifying dollars to do the renovations, then to keep it up. At the same time as you’re renovating, having to fight off the forces that would say, “oh, that doesn’t look like it belongs here,” “they’re only going to break in and tear up the place.” So, it’s been not only the transformation of buildings but the transformation of minds.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH FRONTLINE OUTREACH.

We established that strategic alliance with Frontline Outreach with an emphasis on early learning because we believe it’s essential to start the learning process from the very beginning. In our society the statistics show we are two to three grade levels behind before we even get to kindergarten, so it’s an ongoing catch-ing up process. Frontline gives us an opportunity to make an investment in shaping those young minds early, so that they can be able to compete in a global society.

When we were able to come into the partnership with Frontline, we established what’s called the LEAD Model (Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Academics, Des-tiny). We believe if you focus on leadership, entrepre-neurship, and academics you can change the destiny of the children. Currently there’s an education to prison pipeline, that destiny has already been defined. We want to change it from a pipeline to prison to a pipeline to freedom and prosperity. So we believe starting at Frontline will help us do that.

WHAT’S SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I’m probably more of an introvert than I come across. I like to fly under the radar, to be a supporter, a dream maker and to help others achieve their dreams.

thE 4 MoSt ASKED wEIght loSS QuEStIonS, AnSwERED! Hello again brothers and sisters! It’s Sedrek

“The Inner” Trainer back again and today I will

be starting the beginning of a 4 part series entitled, “The 4 Most Asked Weight Loss Ques-tions, Answered!” In this series, I will be answering the most asked weight-loss question that I’ve come across and answered throughout my years and as a Certified Nutritionist/Personal Trainer.

The first question that we will present to you today is: What Do I Need To Eat To Lose Weight?

Well, it’s not about what you Are eating, it’s about what you’re NOT eating! Allow me to share a short allegory with you. Between the 1500 -1800’s the British Royal Navy set sail on several voyages. Throughout that time, the sailors mysteriously started dying from an unknown disease. Their gums started to bleed, their teeth started falling out, their arms and legs started to bow, and painful sores started to develop all over their bodies. Over 2 Million sailors died because of this mysterious disease. The doctors could not figure out what was wrong, but they did notice that the sailors who were eating citrus fruits, in particular limes

and oranges, were not affected by

the symptoms of this mysterious disease. We

now know this disease to be Scurvy, which is

a deficiency in vitamin C! And yes, that makes

sense, because the sailors who ate the limes

and oranges did not ever contract Scurvy. Two

Million people died because of the lack of one

vitamin.

Now, if a deficiency in ONE vITAMIN

can wreak such havoc on the human body,

just imagine what is going on in our bodies in

Today’s culture, where our diets consist of Little

to NO nutrition or vitamins and very Rarely

contain even the lowest recommended daily

amounts of fruits and vegetables!

And we wonder why we have constant

headaches, high blood pressure, overweight,

stress, tension, and cancers in our body!

These are all symptoms of what we’re

NOT eating. These are All symptoms of Mal-

Nutrition.

SO HOW DO WE FIx IT? The simplest

way to jumpstart your health and metabolism

is to take a multi-vitamin Every day, and to

also attempt to eavt your daily recommended

amounts of fruit and vegetables, which are also

rich in vitamins and minerals.

Daily amounts of these nutrients are

based on your specific caloric needs, age, sex,

and activity level. If you need specific infor-

mation on what vitamins, minerals, and foods

YOU need to eat to jumpstart your weight loss,

please feel free to call me at 407-495-LEDR

and I will be happy to give you a Free Nutrition

Consultation!

Hosea 4:6 says “My people die from

lack of knowledge.” So if you really want to

“know” how to lose weight and get healthy,

please, don’t hesitate to call us for this Free

Knowledge! We are here to help!

Be sure to come back and check out

our next article where we will be answering the

next Most Asked Weight-Loss Question, “Why

Do I Crave Certain Foods, And How Do I Kick

The Cravings?”

Born For This…T. J. Bristol

When a child starts beating on everything

in sight, annoyance is often the result; but for

gospel artist T. J. Bristol, grooves and synco-

pation at an early age provided evidence that

he was simply “born for this.” The product

of a lineage of preachers and psalmists, T.

J. could maintain a steady beat and hold a

melody before celebrating his seventh birth-

day. The musical inclination existed years

before T. J. seriously considered the gift as an

avenue to reach others. At the age of 15, he

embraced the gospel and the gift, pursuing

ministry and music. If not for the melody in

his heart, this son of a psalmist would most

likely be preaching, recognizing it as his first

calling.

In preparation for his first live recording

with his family and friend-based choir POP

(Power of Praise), T. J. considers the impact

of the project’s songs, and quickly acknowl-

edges “Guilty” as the song he is most proud

of. “It paints a picture of the story of Jesus.

Every man is innocent until proven guilty, and

I cannot find fault in Him except for Him being

my savior, healer, ruler, keeper, my Lord and

my friend.”

With a 2015 live recording and CD

release ahead of him, T. J. keeps the pres-

sure down by turning up the praise in his

personal life with artists like James Fortune,

Tye Tribbett and Hezekiah Walker, comment-

ing that “all of their songs express the love of

Christ and they tell a story.” The story that he

speaks of is found in the truth of God’s word.

The same word that houses what T. J. calls,

“the formula for success.”

Having a strong biblical foundation has

been the rock upon which T. J. has aimed to

establish his life. He recognizes that the true

formula for success, along with every ques-

tion he has is found in the bible. In addition

to knowing and confessing the word of God,

T. J. believes in the power of prayer. “So

many times we will go to God and ask him

to get us over the hurdle and never ask him

to help us to finish the race. The bible says

in Philippians 1:6, ‘Being confident of this

very thing, that He who started a good work

in you will complete it until the day of Jesus

Christ.’ After praying, you have to know

how to wait for an answer. Always remem-

ber that prayer is a two way street. I talk to

him, He talks to me. Communication builds

a relationship with the father. ‘Seek ye first

the kingdom of God and his righteousness

and all of these things will be added unto

you,’ Matthew 6:33. To me, that is success.

That success is translated in T. J.’s work

as he labors to perfect melodies and lyrics,

stating that he is “never totally satisfied,

always feeling as if something could have

been done better.” The much-needed break

that helps to re-set his creativity is found in

the time that he spends with his “beautiful

new wife, Selby Bristol,” and flea market

shopping every week.

When asked about the musical legacy

that he is planning to leave, T. J. replied, “I

would like for people to say that God has

truly anointed me to minister the gospel and

that He used my music to bless them and

it was life changing.” Making an indelible

musical mark is T.J.’s aim, and with the

music industry evolving to embrace a more

diversified culture, T. J. believes “the indus-

try’s growth in recent years caters to every

gender, age group, and race, with broader

styles that are as effective as what has

been traditionally presented.” In addition,

T. J. feels the need to remain accessible to

smaller churches and communities, as this

would help to keep the industry and its sup-

porters more united.

After the CD release this year, T. J. de-

clares, “next for me is a Grammy!” He also

hints at future pursuits in acting, theater,

and perhaps even comedy.

Article by Christopher L. Walker

Echo is defined as a sound or series of sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener, after the original sound has ended. If you agree with someone, you might echo his or her statement. That is exactly what our guest today is doing as he is Echoing the sound of worship from Heaven to you. Not a stranger to the music industry, Will Morris has shared the stage with William McDowell, recent Stellar Award Nominee Shana Wilson, David & Nicole Binion, Martha Munizzi, An-thony Evans (The voice), Mali Music, Group 1 Crew, & Jason Upton to name a few.

Will’s music is a hybrid of simple catchy, rock-ish/contemporary gospel melodies, and as he states “something that gets the heart beating.” His lyrics come from many areas, William hints, but the common thread laced through them all are his conversations/prayers spoken to God from day to day, just with a tune tagged to them. We got a chance to catch up with the budding artist and here’s what he had to say.

1. Your new upcoming project doesn’t have the typical gospel title. Why did you name the Album

“ECHO,” what does that mean?

Simply, it’s a message that God gave me to not only echo what He says about us, but to become the actual ECHO of who He is, in the earth. There’s so much noise around us but

wIllIAM MoRRIS is Echoing A nEw sound of A gEnErAtion

none of it ever really leads us anywhere... it’s God’s word that gives true direction and leads us out of the maze most of us find ourselves in.

2. Growing up, who were some of your greatest musical influences?

I was influenced by Stevie Wonder, Luther vandross, Brandy, Kirk Franklin, Brittney Spears (I think I was infatuated with Brittney, thank the Lord...I grew out of that). But honestly I found comfort in the soul of Gospel Music through singing in my church’s youth choir at the age of 9, and have matured through hearing the raw worship experiences in the songs by Israel Houghton, Hillsong, and Jesus Culture.

3. Where do you see Praise & Worship heading in today’s Church?

I see the idea of praise and worship growing deeper in the areas of intimate encounters with God’s presence...not really talking about it from the perspective of being behind a mic or on a stage, but from the place where most people don’t see. It’s easy to declare something in front of a crowd; it’s another thing to declare when no one is around. People are tired of gathering, and nothing happens...when they taste power and His presence for real for real, that has come from the secret place...that will be where the bar stays.

4. I hear you have new music coming out this summer, tell us about that.

Yes, it’s music that spans back over the past 4 years...some new and some old that either wasn’t finished at the time, or just wasn’t released. A lot of my songs come from a prophetic hook that I got while ministering live somewhere. In the moment during worship is usually how I write; but then there are times where the

“Worth is something found internally, and shared with the World externally. Know your worth, and only pursue what polishes it.”

30

Page 31: Gospel Now Magazine March Issue

Gospel Now |

“porcelain throne” is my muse...lol. The music being released this summer...isn’t just from me saying “hey, let me release an album,” but through my experiences of hurt, seeking identity, and just enjoying the Lord...I wrote these songs to give a voice to others who similarly can relate.

5. You wrote a song entitled “I WIN.” Explain the message behind that song.

We live in a world that constantly can make you feel like you’re a loser...whether due to your mistakes, past, or just because. This song is my counterattack on all of that...because when you are in God...when you know that greater is the one on the in-side of you, then you WIN! Period. That song...has surprisingly taken on a life of its own since it first came to me while I was singing during an altar call at The Lounge 360, a Christian Night Club, here in Orlando.

6. And one of our hometown national artists recorded that song correct?

Yes, the amazing LaRue Howard covered the song on her latest project: Live at the River. Its’ crazy how she heard the song. [She] and I were panelists at an artist workshop for Indepen-dent artists here in Orlando. We traded CDs and she tweeted me and her producer moments later, saying that they needed to do something with it. I think I screamed in my car...still have the tweet to this day. Still is surreal to me though. She could have used anyone’s song...and yet she chose mine.

7. You are a man of many talents; I hear you are a graphic art-ist also. When did you take interest in that field of work?

I have always had a knack for drawing or arts and crafts. I re-member as far back as elementary school, when my father and I did projects together. He was known for his bubble letters, caricature, and hip hop drawings. I never could draw as he did, but in college...I discovered apple computers and the software Photoshop. It started out as a hobby, turned into my job, when I couldn’t get hired for 4 years; and today has turned into my business: Genuine Grafix .

8. Outside of being a great artist you are a dedicated member of a local Church in Orlando. Tell us about that.

I attend Joshua Generation Outreach Church, under the leader-ship of my Spiritual Father Apostle Jerry Owens...aka Pops. This place changed my life. I am from Jersey, so when I came here, I knew no one. He was really the first male figure that

God connected me to, that wasn’t concerned about my gift, but concerned about me. Rarely do you find people who see you as you...and want to deal with you as a person, especially when they see what’s hidden inside. God sent me to my pastor, during a very broken time in my life. I would not be the man I am today, without God of course, but through the genuine discipleship of Pop Owens, His wife Momma K, and my JGOC family.

9. How important do you think it is for musicians and artists to be connected to a local Church?

very important. Just like a plant, the only way to be nourished is to be planted, and in the time where you do travel...always come back home to be poured back into. My generation has been dropped so many times, and given fast food gospel, we have gone into survival mode. But God even through tragedies and mishandlings, is showing us that being planted is necessary. During the seasons where there are no bookings, and no lights, and hand claps...it’s in being planted where we can find that there is still a need for us to serve, and during that time we are being prepped for the season where we go out again.

10. What do you want to say to your supporters and fans of your music?

I just want to say, THANKYOU!! I would be lying if I said I wasn’t stoked every time someone purchased a CD, was inspired to worship while my set was taking place, or even posted content on social media about my ministry. I want to encourage them to believe in the dream God gave them. Don’t let fear stop them from trying something new. If a door closes...seek God for the one that will open. ECHO God’s words, and always know in HIM...you Win!

GN: Well this has certainly been a treat sitting down with you. Please keep up the good work man of God, and we will see you at the top as you continue to Echo the Father’s name to the World. If you want to know more about Will Morris or book him for your next event, visit www.WillMorrisMusic.com.

I don’t know, Lord why Satan? I felt instructed

to sit down and it was almost as though I was be-

ing made to sit as a student and be taught a lesson

by a teacher. So I sat down and this is what came

to me: “You needed a choice.” “A choice,” I said.

“Yes, a choice.” I began to talk to God as though

we were having a meeting or discussion and I got

an understanding or explanation that was awe-

some, incredible and to me a revelation. The

dialogue went on and hiere are the main points:

Choice in life is necessary. Choice by definition is

the ability to pick or take one thing over anoth-

er. It reflects having an option, alternatives, or

the ability to make a decision based on informa-

tion, facts or desires. I thought to myself, “I had

a choice through my life experiences to choose

a life that pleased God or a life that pleased me

and ultimately the devil.” Then the thought in my

mind and spirit audibly said, “Yes,” if I had been

all that you knew then there would be no reason

to choose. You would have no alternative, no op-

tions and you would follow me because you knew

nothing else.” I thought, “WOW, this is incredible

and so true.” I began to hear in my spirit that

God wanted man to want Him, to love Him and

to choose Him when there was another option.

“How powerful.” I further began to think of mar-

riage or relationships. When we get into a mar-

.

WHY SAtAn?Have you ever wondered as a Christian: Why God would allow Satan to exist? I never did give it two thoughts; until one day while cooking in my kitchen, I heard in my head or my being, “Why Satan?” I said out loud, “Why Satan?”

34

riage or relationship we have chosen to be with that

special someone when we had millions to choose from.

If I was the only woman on earth and my husband chose

me that would not mean very much. I would be all that

he could have. But when I am chosen to be the one that

he spends his life with that means a whole lot because

he could have chosen someone else. It has made so

much sense. I further heard, “it is about a choice and

love.” I said, “OK, let me hear this explained,” and so

clearly I heard “love is a choice.” When you choose

something it means it is favored over something else

and that choice can be for many reasons. It is what you

prefer, and because you prefer it usually a commitment

to that choice comes. I begin to think about myself and

how I love to eat out and when asked where I want to

go I usually say Chili’s. When asked why there, I say

I love their endless soup, salad and chips, the service,

the atmosphere etc.

My reason for that being my preference is that

Chili’s has proven to me that it has the best soup, salad

and chips, etc... so I declare I love it. Because I spend

so much time there I receive coupons for free food all

of the time.

So there are benefits in my choice and hence I love

Chili’s.

I further thought about some experiences that I have

had at other restaurants that might appear on the out-

side as better, but in actuality wasn’t. I thought about

God and why I choose him over the devil. “What did

Satan really have to offer me, how did his offers turn

out, what was his diabolical plan for me?” When I went

over it in my mind and of course through my experi-

ences I decided that God was the better choice. There

are so many benefits. He treats me well, He takes care

of me, He blesses me, and so much more. So He has

proven to be the better choice and for all He does for

me, I love him. So scriptures started coming to mind,

“I have set before you life and death, choose life” (Deut

30:15). “No servant can serve two masters, he will ei-

ther love one or hate the other” (Matthew 6:24, Luke

16:13). “It is the goodness of the Lord that leadeth

men to repentance” (Romans 2:4). “And this is love,

that we walk after his commandments” (II John 6).

“If you love me then keep my commandments” (John

14:15).

I then said, “God I get it. Satan simply creates an

option, that way we are not robots and we have a free

will to choose life over death, heaven over hell, good

over evil and God over Satan.” I said, “thank you Lord

for giving me choice, I choose you!” So if you ask “Why

Satan?” It’s about a choice, an option; and the choice

proves love for one over the other. So I ask, “who will

you choose?”

thE lIFE & lEgACY oF bIShoP thoMAS E. ChEnAult, SR.On March 26, 1934, the late

Jeanie and Leoris Chenault gave

birth to the sixth of eleven chil-

dren from their union, Thomas

Ezzard Chenault. As a child,

Thomas was known for his

infectious smile and outgoing

personality. Being reared at the

Livingston Street Church of God,

he accepted Christ at an early

age and through his participation

in Sunday School, cultivated his

relationship with God and devel-

oped an excitement about shar-

ing the Good News with others.

He was educated in the Orange

County Public School system

and graduated from Jones High

School in the Class of 1952.

Upon graduating, Thomas en-

listed in the United States Army,

where he served for several

years in active duty as a Medi-

cal Technician. After his military

service, he continued to em-

brace the call to ministry and

subsequently became a licensed and ordained minister within the Church of God. As a young minister, he surrounded

himself with learned and seasoned Church of God Bishops and leaders during his development and growth stages in

ministry.

It was on April 30, 1957 that Thomas joined his life with his high school sweetheart -- Winifred Hess Chenault. Togeth-

er they gave birth to and reared three children: Thomas II, Edward, and Nina Chenault. Upon settling down and begin-

ning his family, Bishop Chenault embraced the call to the pastorate. With this, he served and dedicated more than 55

years of his life to ministering to the masses and emptying himself of every bit of wisdom that God had placed in him

until his demise.

Bishop Chenault served as the Florida-Cocoa Administrative Bishop for the Church of God, Church of God Orlando

District Overseer, Christian Education Director, and Church of God State Secretary-Treasurer for the Florida-Cocoa

Executive Office. Additionally, he served on the Church of God State Board of Counselors, Church of God International

Pastors Advisory Council, as well as on the Church of God International Black Ministry Advisory Board.

Bishop Chenault has held Pastoral leadership in churches throughout the State of Florida, as well as in East New Mar-

ket, Maryland. He pastored the following churches within the Church of God Florida-Cocoa Jurisdiction: Orange Bend

Church of God, Umatilla Church of God, Church of God Auditorium, Jacksonville, Liberty City Church of God, Miami

and his longest and most successful pastoral tenure was at the Livingston Street Church of God, Orlando, FL. Bishop

Chenault was the Senior Pastor of the Livingston Street Church of God for thirty-three years and led the church to ex-

ponential growth and expansion throughout his Pastorate.

In 2013, Bishop Chenault joined forces with his son in the ministry, Bishop Kelvin L. Cobaris, and together they

launched The Impact Church of Orlando- a ministry dedicated to impacting all generations through the love of Jesus

Christ. As a united force, they were able to add more souls to the Kingdom of God and impact individuals from vari-

ous walks of life. In October of 2014, he accepted the appointment of the Administrative Bishop of the Florida-Cocoa

Executive Offices of the Church of God and was installed to serve as the Senior Pastor of Sharpes Church of God in

Sharpes, Florida, until his health would no longer allow him to do so.

During his assignment as pastor of the Church of God Auditorium, Jacksonville, Florida, he attended and received his

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Edward Waters College. In addition to his ministerial accolades

and service to the Body of Christ, Bishop Chenault received several high academic honors by receiving his Doctorate

Degree of Theology (Th.D.) as well as a Doctorate Degree of Literature (D.Litt.), which was a representation of his de-

votion to the acquisition of knowledge. Additionally, Bishop Chenault was also a prominent community leader and was

affectionately referred to as “The Godfather.” He has served as an honorary Deputy of the Orange County Sheriff’s

Department and was a founding member of the widely respected African American Council of Christian Clergy, where

he also served as treasurer. He was an active member of the NAACP and Orange County School Advisory Council.

Bishop Chenault was a wise and innovative leader. He was a blessing wherever he traveled and committed himself to

carrying out the mandate of Christ—loving others as Christ loves us. His reach and impact far exceeded the individuals

that have sat under his leadership and his legacy will live on for years to come.

He leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy: His loving wife of 58 Years, Lady Winifred Chenault, Orlan-

do, FL; two sons, Thomas Chenault, Jr. (Linda) Orlando, FL and Edward “Eddie” Chenault (Jan) of Aiken, SC; one daugh-

ter, Nina Chenault, Atlanta, GA; two sisters, Reverend Hiawatha Chenault Brannum, Orlando, FL and Lady Lugene

Chenault Sanders (Bishop Percell), Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Reverend Hilary “Larry” Chenault (Lucy), Katy, TX;

two aunts, Reverend Mary Dewitt, Conway, SC and Reverend Dr. Elizabeth Hodge, Upper Marlboro, MD; three sister-

in-laws, Gwen Smith, New York, NY; Kathleen Chenault, Fayetteville, NC and Mary Chenault, Cameron, SC; a loving

niece, Patricia Chenault Turner (Norman), Appomattox, VA; Grandsons reared, Thomas Chenault, III, James Chenault

**Bishop Chenault was predeceased by his parents, Jeanie and Leoris Chenault and seven of his siblings: Hosea

Chenault, Queen Esther Medlock, Jeanie Chenault, Onan Chenault, Carl Chenault, Ruth West, and Marvin Chenault.**

gEt thIRStY! by Chris Walker

Invitation to the Thirsty Conference, passionately known as “Thirsty” was birthed through prayer in 2007. The first official conference was held in 2008 in Clermont, Florida. The purpose of Thirsty is simply to create an atmosphere through prayer, worship and the word that will build the lives of Gods people. In its inception “Thirsty” was a conference held for women and young teenage girls. Over time men have desired to attend and have been welcomed.

In 2012 “Thirsty” went International as they held their conference in the beautiful country of the Bahamas. Now in its seventh year , Thirsty 2015 continues this journey on March 19th-21st in the wonderful City of Clermont, Florida where it all began. They are excited to see all that the Lord is doing through the conference and look forward to seeing the continued manifestation of the promises of God. This year features host Pastor Carla Walker, International Author Mary Alice Isleib, Lady Kristi Owens of Orlando, and Recording Artists Larue Howard and Tonya R. Jackson. This conference is Free and open to all by registering at www.thirstynow.info or 352-321-2930.

Consider the last time

your organization was

effectively evaluated

for alignment. By

definition, a plumb line

is a carpenter’s tool

with a weight attached

to the end that is

used to determine the straightness of a wall or other structure. Symbolically, in the Bible a plumb line is used to represent the standard by which God judges His people. A strategic planning session is a plumb lin-ing process to determine the alignment of people, programs and processes to the or-ganization’s vision, mission, goals and plans. [As a carpenter, Jesus likely had a plumb line in His toolkit, and at the same time, He is the standard for which the children of God are to be aligned.]

A strategic and synergy assessment ses-sion is one type of plumb lining process for organizations. It’s a means of determining whether staff and volunteers are aligned, and examines whether programs and pro-cesses are efficient and effective. Whether you are pastoring a church, leading a min-istry or non-profit entity, or running your own company, “plumb lining” can eliminate waste, save time and resources, and in-crease profits. Perhaps it is unclear where the business defect exists. A strategy ses-sion will ferret out and expose core opera-tional challenges and deficiencies that stall or derail short, medium and long-term goals. This process is of significant value, since hin-drances to goals can eventually stifle or pre-vent the overall organizational vision from being accomplished.

Although it’s tempting to presume strat-egy sessions are similar to or can be tagged onto regular weekly or monthly business meetings, there are differences. Recurring business meetings focus on reporting day-to-day and week-to-week activities, financials, data and performance results. Strategy ses-sions go beyond reporting and address quali-tative and human capital issues. There’s an objective to reveal deeper and broader is-sues, with the objective to answer and re-solve the “whys” -- why are profits lagging/stagnated; why are we not hitting our goals, why are members/customers leaving; why

buSInESS tIPS

53

Page 54: Gospel Now Magazine March Issue

| Gospel Now

are employees disgruntled; why are people not loyal; why are we not growing/expanding, why have we plateaued, etc.

Strategy sessions may also vary in length and recurrence. A well-facilitated session can be completed in one, 6-hour session, or last 40+ hours over the course of 4 to 8 weeks. The du-ration and number of sessions will depend on the size and complexity of the organization, as well as the leader’s commitment.

People are the heartbeat of any organiza-tion. Staff headcount and forecasting, job/po-sition descriptions, responsibilities and depart-mental alignments, and succession planning are vital to a well-conducted strategic session. This is precisely why staffing is a component within strategic planning. Interpersonal relationships, behavioral styles, and team effectiveness can also be addressed through the strategic plan-ning process. Leaders that invest the time to provide input during this segment of the strat-egy session will see growth, development, en-gagement and commitment from employees as well as volunteers, once the agreed-upon solu-tions are implemented.

A well-packaged strategy session will gath-er all key organizational leaders and host the session away from the normal workplace. Al-though it’s tempting to stay at the worksite for a strategy session, pulling away from the day-to-day operations is key to ensuring the lead-ership focus and engagement for the agreed-upon timeframe. Also, strategy sessions are most effective when the senior-most leader is an active participant in the session, instead of taking the role as meeting facilitator. This dif-fers from general meetings where the leader is facilitating the meeting discussion and ush-ering attendees through the session’s agenda items. Positioning the leader as a participant alleviates him/her of the burden of conducting the event and allows for active involvement. A seasoned facilitator will also ensure all par-ticipants remain appropriately engaged in the session and coaches all involved participants through the process.

At the conclusion of the plumb line process, the facilitator will compile solutions, recom-

mendations, programs, and review the findings. Determine sooner rather than later whether a strategic planning session is right for you and your organization.
