MICROBIOLOGY, VIRUSES, BACTERIA, CYANOBACTERIA AND

PHYCOLOGY

The student is introduced to microbiology and the scientists who contributed to the subject. They

study about types and classification of bacteria, their reproduction, viruses, and fungi. The disease

causing forms of bacteria and viruses. They learn about the control measures of plant diseases.

PAPER II: DIVERSITY OF NON-VASCULAR PLANTS – PART - II

MYCOLOGY, PLANT PATHOLOGY, BRYOPHYTES AND PLANT

ANATOMY

Knowledge is gained about the characteristics, classification, biodiversity and economic

importance of fungi. The anatomy of plant tissues such as meristems, epidermis, permanent tissues,

complex tissue systems and structure of plant organs; reproductive developmental aspects of male

reproductive system - Pollen grains, female reproductive system - embryo sac are studied in detail

which enables the student to identify and appreciate the structure of plants. Knowledge about

classification, mode of reproduction and detailed type study of some important bryophytes are

dealt with.

BIOLOGY AND PHYTOGEOGRAPHY

Study of diversity in morphology, anatomy and reproduction of few forms of pteridophytes.

Knowledge about the scope of Paleobotany, types of fossils, its role in blobal economy and

geological time scale is obtained. Brings about understanding of the various fossil genera

representing different fossil groups. Students will gain an insight into the interactions between

biotic and abiotic components of the environment. Through this they will understand the

conditions prevailing in a particular geographical area which allows for a particular species to

grow. They also learn about the concept of energy flow in the ecosystem.

PAPER–IV: GYMNOSPERMS AND EMBRYOLOGY OF ANGIOSPERMS

The student gains an understanding about the characters and classification of gymnosperms. In-

depth knowledge about developmental stages of the angiosperms is obtained. In addition, the

student gathers information about the techniques involved in tissue culture.

TAXONOMY AND ECONOMIC BOTANY; MOLECULAR BIOLOGY,

GENETIC ENGINEERING, BIOTECHNOLOGY AND PLANT

PHYSIOLOGY; CYTOLOGY, GENETICS, EVOLUTION AND PLANT

BREEDING; PLANT PHYSIOLOGY

The basics of taxonomy and classification of plants as well as their characteristic features are

studied. Plants of economic importance are studied. Awareness is created in student’s mind about

the steps in recombinant DNA technology, genomic libraries, application of genetic engineering

technology in agriculture. A brief account on hazards & safe guards of genetic engineering

technology with special reference to Bt Cotton. Studies are also done to understand all the concepts

concerning the functioning of the plant, the role of enzymes and bioenergetics aspects of plant

growth. The student gets basic knowledge about genetics and evolution and understands the roles

they play in the occurrence of species. They are also made aware of basic plant breeding

techniques.
