Bachelor of Arts, Diploma of Education

Tonight marks a rite of passage into a world unbridled by the incessant peeling of

bells, to a reality where you are relatively free from the seemingly inescapable

will of others. Over the course of your high school years you have been guided,

coached and driven to achieve the heights your parents and teachers believe you

capable of scaling. Increasingly you have become masters of your own destiny

and as men rather than boys you now come face-to-face the exciting world of

adulthood.

For some of you it will be a time filled with trepidation about leaving the relative

security and brotherhood Normanhurst Boys provides. While an arduous period

of examinations is still to come, take solace in the fact that you are prepared. You

have worked hard to get where you are today and this will make all the difference

in the coming weeks.

The journey you have undertaken over the course of your high school years is

one that has been punctuated by periods of tribulation as you have struggled to

establish not only what you are capable of, but more importantly, who you are

and who you will become. From the first day you donned your Normanhurst

uniform you were destined to achieve some truly outstanding things. Tonight is

about celebrating just how far you have come.

Over your time at Normanhurst Boys you have been constantly reminded of the

school mantras of “setting the bar high” and “personal best”. I have watched you

all grow over the past two years and I have observed the height you set the bar,

and your personal bests within the context of this great school. I have watched

you as you met challenges and demonstrated resilience and perseverance and I

have been heartened by what I have witnessed.

On behalf of the staff I wish you the very best for a bright and prosperous future.

You have seen the value of working as a team and of working to capacity. There

is no doubt about your abilities or your readiness to wring the most out of what

comes ahead. Make the most of your gifts and opportunities and continue to set

the bar high.

Congratulations Year 12 on becoming the graduating year for 2015. All of you have

worked very hard and rightly deserve the recognition you are receiving tonight; you

truly deserve it. Some of you have overcome some huge hurdles to reach this point.

The School, your Parents and I are very proud of all of you. As a youngster, there were

many people who impacted on my life very significantly. These people taught me life

skills that I thought I would share with you. Here are some of the most important.

“Information is as far away as the Telephone”. Let the internet be your tool in assisting

you in moving forward with your lives; and not become your reason to procrastinate.

“Get Percy working for you”. Do not allow your work load become your enemy. Plan

your time and achieve the best results for yourself that only you can achieve.

(Perseverance)

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. Strive always to do your personal

best and never give up. The rewards will enormously affect your growth as people.

(Resilience)

“Always follow your instinct and let it guide your path”. Make decisions on your

future based on what you enjoy and are good at doing. This will enhance your chances

for success. Avoid making decisions based upon what others think will make you more

successful. (Passion)

“It is not the problems that we face in life that define us; it is how we deal with them”.

(Strength)

I want you to be decisive in what you choose to do and tenacious in working to achieve

your goals in life. The spirit of “Team Normo” is to network and team up with those

close to you and your mentors to achieve the best for them and therefore yourself. This
